Introduction/ Background
Equality and diversity can be termed as promotion of equal opportunities to diverse
individual that are working in organisation so that they can make optimum utilisation of their
capabilities and skills for growth and success of firm. It is legal responsibility of HR manager to
ensure that no one should be discriminated on basis of gender, age, caste and religion within
workplace. Effective management of equality and diversity within organisation helped in
improving performance and productivity of employees and overall achievements of goals.

Aim :-
“To analyses the impact of workplace discrimination over performance and working of
employees at workplace.” A case study on Walmart.
Objectives
 To know about the concept of discrimination at workplace of an organisation.
 To understand the impact of workplace discrimination over working and performance of
employees in Walmart.
 To find out different ways by which Walmart can eliminate issue of discrimination at
workplace.
Limitation of the study
Scope of report is limited as Equality and diversity in workplace have been conducted of
Walmart only that means it have not researched about the different organisation. Therefore it can
be stated that research have narrow and limited approached it can be useful for Walmart to
known about method that it can used to improve its workplace (Partington, 2019). Due to
limitation of time, money researcher was not able to effective analysing and evaluating equality
and diversity within Walmart so that effective strategies can be formulated by Hr manager to get
best outcome.

Literature Review
Concept of discrimination at workplace of an organisation
As per view of (Ali and Konrad, A. M., 2016) concept of discrimination among
employees in the workplace have been emerged since many years that have resulted in
ineffective performance of organisation. There are some organisation in which HR manager
discriminate between employees on basis of distribution of opportunities so that they can grow
and develop new skills and knowledge. Many employees are discriminated within workplace on
basis of genders such as unequal pay or over time work that leads to dissatisfaction among
employees. It can be stated that individual have been exploited within organisation on various
factors that have lead to more employment turnover, increase in chance of absentees and
decrease in overall performance and productivity of individual. Therefore government have
make strict law, rules and regulation such as equality act, Equal wages so that no harm can be
caused to employees that are working in the organisation.
Impact of workplace discrimination over working and performance of employees in Walmart
As noted by (Novy and Weinzierl, C., 2019) discrimination within workplace of Walmart
have adversely impacted on performance of employees as it lead to dissatisfaction. HR manager
by discriminating among employees have increase chance of conflict and lead to ineffective
coordination of efforts to different individual towards common goals. Most of the employees are
not willing to work with such company that does not take active part to provide equal
opportunities to all to use their capabilities and skills for growth and success of organisation.
Therefore it can be stated that discrimination among employees can impact on brand image,
quality of products and services manufactured by company and loss of highly skilled and
talented employees within organisation.
Different ways by which Walmart can eliminate issue of discrimination at workplace
As illustrated by (Scott-Baumann and et.al., 2019) there are various method that can be
used by HR manager of walmart to reduce inequality and discrimination among employees so
that particular outcome can be gained. Firstly leaders need to understand view, ideas and opinion
of each employee while taking decision so that they can be motivated to put their best for growth
and success of firm. HR manager while hiring, planning for growth and development of
employees need not to discriminate on terms of gender, age, sex and caste in order to maintain
strong brand image of enterprise. Proper training and development program need to be organised

by company for all employees so that they can gain confidence to perform specific task in best
possible manner and achieve specific goals. Therefore it can be stated that company by taking
all such steps can retain maximum employees and strong brand image for long term growth and
success of enterprise.
Research Methodology
It refers to various method that research have used to conduct research so that effective
result can be get such as types of research, the way data have been analysed, research philosophy
that have been used to conduct research. Therefore various method that have consider while
conducting research can be explained as follows:
Research Types: Qualitative and quantitative are two types of method that are used to conduct
effective researched such as:
Qualitative method: It included data or information that cannot be measured or evaluates in
term of value or figure that is can only be observed to know about detail information of
particular topic (Syed and Ozbilgin, 2019). Qualitative data are suitable in case of indentifying
nature, behaviour of individual within workplace so that effective strategies can be formulated.
Quantitative method: On the other hand quantitative method includes mathematical, numerical
data or information to get knowledge about specific topic. Therefore the report have make use of
qualitative method to conduct research on equality and diversity so that evidence such as data,
graph can be given to make research valid.
Research Philosophy: It analysis the way various data, facts and figure have been analysed and
utilised to effectively understand appropriate result or outcomes. It is sub categorised into three
parts such as:
Interpretivism: It state that research interpret data, information as per its area of interest and
knowledge in order to understand meaning of specific information.
Positivism: Logical reasoning and knowledge have been used to effectively understand
particular data therefore have more evidence and proof behind data researched.
Realism: This theory explains real data as it is based on existing object so researcher have
selected interpretivism philosophy theory to understand equality and diversity within
organisation.
Data collection: There are mainly two methods to collect crucial information regarding research
that is primary and secondary. Primary method states that research have gathered information

first hand by personally conducting survey or asking various questions to people in order to get
desired information. On the other hand secondary method includes use of books, journal and
article or magazine to find accurate and reliable information. The research have made by use of
both primary and secondary sources to conduct research on equality and diversity within
workplace.
Sampling: It is process in which specific or particular group is select from large number of
individual to get sample of particular information. Probability sampling includes selection of
random individual whereas in Non-probability people that have specific skills are selected to
collect information (Scott-Baumann and et.al., 2019). Researchers have used random sampling
Probability method of 50 workers of Walmart to know about discrimination among employees.
Data analysis: Thematic and statistical are two methods for data analysis such as thematic data
are used to understand quantitative information. On the other hand Statistical data are used to
understand qualitative data so report has used this method for effective research.
Ethical consideration: All ethical practices have been considered by me while making or
conducting project so that no harm can be caused to others.

Interpretation: It can be illustrated from above graph that out of 50 employees 44 stated that
equality and diversity is most essential for growth and success of enterprise so it need to be
effectively managed. Out of 50, 5 are not sure about answer whether equality and diversity need
to be managed or not and only 1% people of Walmart thinks that it does not plays any important
role in workplace.

Interpretation: It can be illustrated from above analysis that most of the employees were agreed
that HR manager have taken equal steps for employees so that they can provided equal
opportunities to share their views or enhance their knowledge. Among 50% only 7 % employees
have stated that HR manager of Walmart promote employees on equal basis and 5% state that
equal chance is given to them to take part in decision making of organisation.

Interpretation: From the above analysis it can be stated that Walmart manager have effectively
managed diversity and equality in the organisation by understating their problem and providing
numerous opportunities to share their ideas. 36% of employees stated that Walmart HR manager
have not discriminated and have respect or recognise efforts of each individual that have
contributed in raising employees morale and motivation level to work hard for growth and
success of enterprise. On the other hand 7% employees of Walmart stated that HR manager
sometime discriminate among individual at time of recruitment so these need to be removed for
better operation of enterprise.

Interpretation: It have been analysed that more than 35 % of employees have stated that there
are happy and satisfied with policies and procedure of HR manager of Walmart. But 10% are not
happy with HR practices therefore there are keys areas which need to be improved by HR
manager so that maximum employees can be retained within firm for longer period of time. Out
of 50%, 5 % employees have said that they don’t know whether policies of HR manager are
effective or ineffective.

Interpretation: It can be interpreted from above chart that there are various benefits of
promoting equality and diversity that can be enjoyed by company as well as different employees
of organisation. As per view of 25% of individual it helps in effective performance of
employees, maintained and establishment of strong brand image and employees loyalty so that
organisation can grow and expand its business for longer period of time.
Research Findings
The most important things that have been found from research is that equality and
diversity is most crucial for growth and expansion of business. So HR manager of Walmart have
ensure that people that have different culture, tradition are effectively managed and coordinate
towards accomplishment of specific objectives. Employees of walmart are highly loyal and hard
working as they have been appreciated and recognised by HR manager on continuous basis. But
some of the individual thinks that Hr manager have discriminated among individual on terms of
gender, caste and religion so it need to improve its practices to retain maximum number of
employees within organisation. Equality and diversity within workplace of walmart has
contributed in maintained of quality of products and services and satisfaction of customers
requirements beyond their expectancy. Transparency while promotion and hiring have inspired
talent, skilled and experienced employees to work hard for Walmart so that it can gain
competitive positioning in market. HR manager have continuously monitor and analysed

performance of employees so that proper guideline or training program can be organised so that
they can perform task within limited wastage of time, money and efforts. Employees of Walmart
are easily able to coordinate and cooperate with each other towards common goals as manager
have build or develop strong relationship between them. It has ensured that no employees can be
discriminated by other individual on basis of gender, caste, religion and they should work as a
team for achievement of common objectives. Therefore it can be stated that Equality and
diversity have been consider by HR manager of Walmart while performing different task in the
organisation.
Conclusion and recommendations
It can be concluded from above report that there are numerous benefits of maintain
equality and diversity within workplace so HR manager need to take various crucial steps so chat
employees can be stay positive and motivated to put their best for growth and success of
organisation such as:
1. HR manager need to ensure that leader of Walmart need to take view of each individual
while taking decision so that feeling of belongingness can be created and they are
influenced to work more hard so that objectives can be achieved.
2. Social media or innovative technologies can be use by HR manager to rewards and
recognise or promote employees that have work hard in previous years so that company
can earn maximum profit margin.
Reflection
While making Research I have learnt a lot of things such as importance of equality and
diversity within organisation and what crucial steps that needs to be taken by each manager so
that equality and diversity can be retained. I have learnt research skills and the way data can be
collected and analysed so that particular result can be gathered. The report has enhance my
communication and knowledge skills about keys areas that need to be considered by HR
manager to retained maximum satisfaction of employees and achieve specific goals. I have also
get to know that if HR manager need to retained high skilled and talent employees within
organisation it should not be biases or discriminate among employees. I was able to make
effective utilisation of internet and innovative technologies that can be used by me in future
career to manage my task or activities. At the same time I got to know about different method

that can be use to conduct research such as primary and secondary. Therefore it can be
illustrated that I have learnt most of the things from research made that are useful for me in
future career for different professions.
