Challenges of managing talent within the hospitality industry.
Introduction
Talent management refers to the systematic process of finding the vacant position, recruiting
right candidates, developing expertise and skills of candidates to match the position. Talent
management is the competency, power and ability of employees within an organisation. This
project is based on hospitality industry which is a broad category of field in the service industry.
Ritz-Carlton Hotel is a chosen hospitality company that was founded in 1983 by Cesar Ritz.
Managing talent at workplace helps hospitality organisation in accomplishment of its vision,
building up strong reputation, retaining finest talent, better decision making etc. These are main
benefits of talent management that could be gain by company while managing talent within the
hospitality sector (Al-Azzam and Al-Qura'an, 2018). Apart from this, there are different
challenges or issues that get anticipated in managing talent it working place. These are cultural
differences among employees, giving adequate training to workers, effective position between
management and employees and so on. These are identified as the major challenges in the
hospitality company.
This report is based on different tasks or activities that will be facilitate researcher in
completion of full project effectively. These activities are research questions and objectives,
literature review, appropriate research method, data collection and data analysis, reflection and
alternative research methodology. These are main activities that are useful for researcher in
completion of research project successfully and systematically.
Background of the study
Talent management is not only the management of human resource in an enterprise but it
is the systematic process of determining, encouraging, hiring, developing, maintaining and
retaining the top talents for the successful operations of the hospitality organisation i.e. Ritz-
Carlton Hotel. Talent management in the hospitality sector plays different role by improving
business performance such as helps employees feel skilled, motivated and engaged, allowing
them to work towards achievement of company’s long term goals. It turns to help an organisation
in increasing client satisfaction and also improving their business performance. Apart from this,

there are several challenges which are faced by Ritz-Carlton Hotel while managing talent in the
working place (Alemu, 2019). These are cultural differences among workers, giving sufficient
training to workforce, effective arrangement between administration and workers etc. All these
are major challenges that have negative impact over business performance and growth of
hospitality industry. In order to address these challenges, there are some ways that should use by
company such as free flow of communication, development of effective talent management
strategy, implementation of inclusive and friendly working environment. These ways support an
organisation in reduction of challenges that associated with the talent management.
Rationale
The current project is based on the theme of talent management. The main purpose of
doing this investigation is to find out several challenges of talent management that are faced by
hospitality organisation at workplace. In order to overcome these challenges, researcher wishes
to analysis different number of effective ways that could be applied by hotel manager. This is the
main and preliminary purpose of the researcher for performing this investigation. Along with
this, researcher also has personal interest for doing this research is to develop their own research
skills, time management skill and communication skill so that they can conduct more effective
research in the near future (Hantsuk, 2018).

Literature review
Literature review is the systematic process that helps investigator in identification of gaps
in previous study. Literature review is based on secondary data and for collecting secondary
information, there is requirement of different sources i.e. books, articles, magazines etc. This
section of research project facilitate researcher in addressing of each objectives of study.
The role of talent management in context of hospitality industry
According to the Nasaruddin and Emad, (2019) management of talent refers to the
process of hiring, managing, developing and retaining the excellent and most talented workforce
in the hospitality industry. In fact, management of talent plays an essential role in the business
organisation as it support company in improvement of its performance. There are various roles
that play by talent management within hospitality industry such attract skilled employees,
increase employee’s motivation, continuous coverage of critical roles, enhance employee
performance, engaged workforce, retain most knowledgeable worker, improves business
performance, increase client satisfaction etc. These are main roles played by talent management
in the workplace of hospitality industry. This turn to support an organisation in accomplishment
of competitive advantages and achievement of their long term objectives and goals within lesser
time.
According to the Johnson, Huang and Doyle. (2019), In context of hospitality industry, it
has been investigated that management of talent is an essential practice which allows HR
manager in encouraging workforce to do their job activities effectively and sustain longer in the
hotel. By creating better use of this practice the hospitality sector can easily accomplish success
and growth as they have more talented employees which owe ability to carry out business work
in such a way that could assist them in helping their clients in more appropriate manner. This
will enhance satisfaction of its clients which impact them to stay trustworthy with the hospitality
industry.

Several challenges or issues that might be faced by Ritz-Carlton Hotel while managing talent at
workplace
As per the view presented by Rathore, (2018), each and every HR manager places
different efforts in doing their business functions within an organisation. Talent management is
introduced as an essential activity which is being used by human resource department. While
performing so constantly, the HR department also faces various challenges that are related with
the management of talent. Some of the main challenges or problems which are mostly
experiential while developing talent management activities are cultural differences in employees,
efficient adjustment between administration and workforce, giving adequate training to workers
and so forth. These are considering biggest and common challenges within the Ritz-Carlton
Hotel. It has been seen that, there are different number of employees that are working with each
other and have to belong with separate cultural background. As it becomes major issue for its
hotel administrator as they face some issues in dealing with the workforce and analysing their
expertise field. As an outcome, it becomes a major problem for the human resource manager to
manage talent with different culture workers.
Ways or strategies for addressing the challenges related with talent management
According to the Seal, Devija and Kumaran, (2018), the main determined issues related
with talent management are alignment between organization and workers, cultural differences
and trouble in giving training to workforce. In order to deal with these issues, there are some
effective ways that should be use by Ritz-Carlton Hotel. These are development of effective
training program, implementation of flat communication, development of inclusive and friendly
working environment etc. These are considering major ways that are effective for Ritz-Carlton
Hotel to use and reduce the above determined challenges effectively. These are effective and
useful ways that directly leads to development of talent management with lesser probability of
problems. Along with this, such types of ways also create positive relationship between
organisation and workforce as they are having words with one more at daily basis. Therefore, it
can be supposed that by following these practices Ritz-Carlton Hotel can easily reduce issues
linked with management of talent and manage their business productivity or performance in
faster way.

Research methodology
Research is a systematic process that support researcher in collection of information about
the specific area of study. There are some useful approaches and methods of primary and
secondary research which will be explained as below:
Research approach: There are two types of main approach which are inductive and
deductive. These approaches help investigator in analysing of qualitative and quantitative
information. Present study is based on quantitative research and for analysing quantitative
information; deductive approach will be used as it save time and cost of researcher. Inductive
approach is not useful according to the present investigation because it is completely based on
qualitative study.
Research Philosophy: There are two essential types of research philosophies are known as
positivism and interpretivisim. Both are effective but according to the present study, positivism
type of philosophy is more valuable and useful because it facilitate investigator in collecting,
analysing and using quantitative data within minimum time duration.
Research methods and process: There are two types of research methodology which are
quantitative and qualitative. These are considering main types of investigation that supports
investigator in gathering of valid and reliable information (Ciocoiu, 2018). For performing this
research, quantitative form of methodology is more essential and valuable as it facilitate in
providing numerical and reliable information about the gender equality and its impact on
business performance. On the other hand, qualitative study is not useful for current investigation
as it consume more time as well as resources of an organisation or researcher.
Primary and secondary data: Primary and secondary are two importance types of research
that facilitate researcher in gathering of qualitative and quantitative information. Primary
research helps researcher to collect quantitative information by use of questionnaire. On the other
hand, secondary research assist investigator in collecting of secondary data from different
sources such as books, magazines, articles etc. According to the current investigation
questionnaire will be used as it aid in collecting of reliable data from the respondents
(Tomčíková, 2019).
Sampling: Probability and non-probability are two techniques of sampling that helps
researcher in selection of sample size. In order to select sample size for present study probability

sampling has been chosen because it assists in selection of sample in random basis and also not
takes maximum time and resources of investigator. By using probability sampling 40 managers
of Ritz-Carlton Hotel will be chosen.
Time horizon: Gantt chart is an effective toll of time management that will be used by
researcher for managing time of each activity (Collison and Marchesseault, 2018). These

Costs: This is an important and necessary factor that will be required by researcher for carrying
out primary and secondary research in systematic manner. In order to doing both types of
research, researcher will be needed sufficient amount of cost. As it will support them to complete
each task of project in systematic and effective manner (Mohajan, 2018).
Access: This is another essential part of the research that supports researcher in collecting
of primary and secondary data about the topic. For collecting primary information, researcher
will require access to the company to gather data from the employees. Within an investigation,
research has full access to gather data from the selected employees of Vodafone. In case of
secondary research, investigator require access to open company’s website as it support them in

Ethical issues: There are number of ethical issues within an investigation such as
carefulness, openness, objectivity, responsible publication, legality, honesty and integrity,
respect for intellectual property etc. These are main issues that have impact on investigator while
doing this research in unethical manner (Kumar, 2019). Along with this there are some ethical
considerations that must be following by researcher while doing this research. These are

are e-mail, written and oral communication, presentation etc. All these are effective
communication tools that helps researcher in achievement of research objectives. These will be

said that organisation will face the challenges in performance of the exercise of talent
management. The main issues will be facing by an organisation includes lacked leadership,
increased employee turnover and unappealing company culture (Chung and D’Annunzio-Green,
2018).

It is ascertained from the literature review that authors also have the views that effective
application of strategies will help to get rid of the challenges related to talent management such
as development of effective training program, development of friendly and inclusive working
environment and execution of flat communication (Francis and Baum, 2018).

Conclusion and Recommendation
Conclusion: From the above mentioned information it has been concluded that most of
the participants had idea about the talent management and its effective role within hospitality
sector. These role are related with hiring of right people, development of strong management
policies and designing of integrated underlying systems. All these are essential role that helped
hospitality industry by improving their growth. Along with this, there was requirement for
managers to take initiatives regarding talent management. These initiatives are maintaining of
individual identity, recognition and reward and training and development. All these are essential
in personal development of employees at workplace. There are several benefits gained by
hospitality industry due to talent management such as effective decision making, strengthens
company's human capital structure and strong brand image in customer's mind and at workplace.
Different ways also followed by business for retaining talented workforce such as providence of
right benefits, encouragement of flexibility and creation of more on-the-job opportunities. These
ways supported hospitality sector by reducing the issue of high employee turnover and also
retaining of knowledgeable workforce. Apart from this, different number of challenges faced by
hospitality organisation while managing talent at workplace including lack of leadership,
unappealing company culture and increased employee turnover. These are major challenges that
were negatively impacted over the growth and development of hospitality industry.
Recommendations: From the above mentioned data it has been recommended that there
are different ways for attracting top talent at workplace. These ways will be explained as below: Build an employee-focused culture: Ritz-Carlton Hotel must build an employee-focused
culture that will help them in eliminating of cultural issue among employees. This will
also support an organisation by increasing creativity and innovation at workplace.
 Provide benefits to the employees according to their performance: This is an another
essential and important way for Ritz-Carlton Hotel in attraction of top talent. This will
support company in achievement of competitive benefits and attainment of long term
goals and benefits within given time period.

Critical Evaluation
I am happy that I got a chance for performing research project over the them of talent
management i.e. challenges faced by hospitality sector while managing talent. In order to gather
data regarding this topic, I used number of research approaches and methods that were useful for
me by providing information in quantitative manner. I used questionnaire that was more useful
and valuable in gathering of quantitative and primary data about the topic. This technique was
useful for me as it helped in provenance of reliable data that results in attainment of research
objectives and aim successfully. For analysing quantitative data, I used frequency distribution
analysis and also applied Ms-excel for making suitable graphs according to the questions.
Therefore, all these are useful methods or techniques for me in achievement of research aim and
objectives.
By executing present investigation, I become able for improving my research skills that
outputs in completion of full research project systematically. This research helped me by
increasing my knowledge and understanding about the talent management and its role in an
organisation. Apart from this, by doping this investigation I also faced certain limitations such as
insufficient time, lack of resources, unethical and improper behaviour of respondents etc. All
these are major issues or challenges faced by me while conducting this study. In order to
overcome issues associated with conduction of research project, I followed some ways and tools.
In order to eliminate the challenge of time, I used Gantt chart that was more effective tool for
me. It was helped me in identifying of data of each activity that outputs in completion of project
within allotted time. In order to reduce the issue of unethical and improper behaviour of
respondents, I followed research ethics and develop 1 open-ended questions, where respondents
are completely free to provide their opinion about the topic. In overall, by using research
methods I achieved research aim as well as objectives easily.
Alternative research methodology is also consider as a part of methodology that support
researcher while they require to conduct further research. Interview is consider as an alternative
methodology that could be use by investigator while they acquire another opportunities for doing
further investigation. This is a tool of qualitative data collection and analysis that assist
investigator in concluding of valid conclusion. By using this method, researcher will need to

make open-ended questions. As it support investigator in gathering of qualitative data about the
particular area of study (Gupta, 2019).
By performing this research, researcher increase their understanding about the talent
management and its importance and difficulties within hospitality industry. Research outcomes
of the study helped in analysing of different communication tools that used for communicating
missing information to the intended audience. Research outcomes also supported in identification
of importance of research methods in attainment of research aim and objectives (Kandampully,
Zhang and Jaakkola, 2018).
