One of the main reason to conduct this study is to gain knowledge about the role of managers and leaders
in employee well being and development as well. In addition to this, it help in both professional and
personal aspect to researcher. With reference to professional, it help in gaining insight about the issues and
challenges faced by managers and leaders within the employee development procedure and also the role
played by them due to this researcher is able to perform activities in its future organazation. On the other
hand, it help in improving skills such as data analysis, communication, time management, data
interpretation and many more.

Concept of employee development and well being in retail sector
According to Michel O’ Donnell, (2018), Employee development is referred as the procedure of
working with employees to improve, develop, modifying, and enhance existing skills within the
support of organazation objectives. Along with this, it allow company to remain competitive within
this high competition prevailing at business environment. Employee development and well being is
one of the vital factor as it assist in handling unexpected situation and dealing with the challenges in
a proper manner. It is analyzed that when a company emphasize an employee development as well as
well being then it is able to retain and acquire talent at workplace which leads to increase in
performance and probability of an organization.
Role played by leaders and line managers while working towards employee development process in
Marks and spencer
As per the view point of JADE WOOD (2017), It is analyzed that leaders and managers perform an
important role in the employee well-being and development. The higher authorities encourage
employees to enhance their skills timely and to acquire new learnings whereas leaders ensure that its
staff members has been provided with effective training and development session so that they can
clear about their roles as well as responsibilities. Apart from this, leaders and managers develop
employ development activities as per the needs and requirements of staff members. It is determined
that all this will lead to raise in growth of staff members both personally and professionally which
has positive impact on the performance of an organization.
Various challenges faced by managers and leaders in the process of employee development in Marks
and spencer.
According to DAN, (2019), It is determined that leaders and managers face problems and challenges
within the employee development process. The major issue is bridging and identifying skill gap.
Along with this, providing training and development session appropriately is also consider as an issue
as it occur high cost to the organization. There are also many other challenges such as making right
hiring decision, confronting an employee performance problem, peer conflicts and so on. Therefore,

it is important for a company to emphasize on resolving these issues so that performance is
maintained at marketplace in an effective manner.
