Chapter 1: Introduction 1.1) Overview of research This research project is based on the workplace discrimination that is the a main reason that impede and hamper the performance of employees. Workplace discrimination is mainly associated with certain prejudices and reflects the situation when an employees is treated unfavourably because of their gender, race, religion or any other parameter for favouritism and discrimination (Resnick and Galupo, 2019). Thus, workplace discrimination creates a biased business environment that negatively impacts motivation level and efficiency of employees. Therefore, it become necessary for all organisation to adopt some strategies and policies to overcome issues of workplace discrimination in order to maintain the viability and better performance. 1.2) Research aim and objectives The aim of this research work is,“To identify the various forms of discrimination that exists at workplace of an organization together with the various reason that has lead to this situation.” Objectives The main objectives associated with current research work conducted on Rolls Royce includes: To develop better understanding about the concept of workplace discrimination. To evaluate the reason and main cause of workplace discrimination in Rolls Royce together with its various types and forms(Roehling, Choi and Roehling, 2019).To understand the importance of effective management of equality and diversity in order to enhance performance of employees at Rolls Royce. Thus, selection of this research topic is justifiable as facilitates better understanding about the strategies that can be adopted by an organisation in order to overcome the negative impacts of workplace discrimination through effectively managing equality and diversity at workplace. Beside this, the current research topic is also suitable from academic background and personal interest of research and also facilitates improvement in skills and knowledge of other scholar individuals. 1.4) Activities and timescales A large number of activities and task are performed by a researcher in order to accomplish an investigation in an effective ways. To complete all the task on time and to meet the set timescales use of following Gantt chart is made(Johnson, 2019). This facilitates systematic presentation of all the activities performed during this research work together with information about the time duration required to accomplish each activity. Thus, literature review provides a base and framework for current research work on the topic of workplace discrimination a discussion of which is provided below: 2.2)Literature Review To develop better understanding about the concept of workplace discrimination As per the Benstead S. 2018, Discrimination at the workplace is depends on the partiality and certain occurring as when the workers are treated in unfavourable or unequally on the basis of gender, sexuality, race religion, disability and so on. If employers treattheir subordinates in unequal manner, is considered under an unlawful act. For this, direct discrimination arises only when someone is treated in unfavourable way in comparison to other employees. As in relation with Rolls Royce, company need to develop better understanding with their employees regarding 3
discrimination and spread awareness among them to eliminate unfavourite thing within an organisation.So,todevelopawarenessatworkplace,employersshouldconducttraining programmeforemployeeswhichisusefulinhavinggoodknowledgeregardingthe discriminative factors and also overcome those components by which inequality can arise within the company. Chapter 3: Methodology 3.1)Research Approach Research Philosophy It is an effective way of gathering, examining and utilising data in an appropriate manner. It is useful in providing suitable concept and purpose of having knowledge and formulation and beliefs and concerning assumptions which is depends on the factual events(LeBrón and Viruell- Fuentes, 2020). For this, main research include positivism and interpretivism. By considering this research, positivism philosophy is undertaken in relation with Rolls Royce as it is essential in predicting things and getting expected result. Research Approach It defines as a plan and procedure which is useful in analysing and interpreting assumed data. For this, the whole decision of investigator include concerning assumption of philosophy and approaches in order to determine and carry forward a study. This approach is of two main types deductive and inductive and in relation with Rolls Royce, deductive approach is opted to examine the aspects of investigation as it is developed to put emphasis on the collected data and hypothesis of current theory. Research Method It is considered as the strategic procedure which is useful in collecting data or examining information and developing better understanding about research in significant manner. It offer guidelines regarding that how research should conduct and also keep in mind the prominent ethics that would not harm human sentiments. For this, it is analysed that various sources are considered including financial and non financial sources. It can also be concluded that workplace discriminationhamperperformanceofemployees.Further,itcanbesummarisedthat management of equality and diversity facilitates improvement in motivation level together with more productivity and better workplace environment. At last, it can be concluded that, effective 11
communication, unbiased HR practises and participative leadership approach are the ways to encounter and overcome the issues of workplace discrimination. 5.2) Recommendations Following recommendations can be made for Rolls Royce to solve the issue of workplace discrimination and also facilitates better equality and diversity: Unbiased HR practises are recommended for Rolls Royce as it facilitates better equality in opportunities and incentives for employees thus, reduce the chances of discrimination and favouritism. Apart from this, participative leadership approach together with effective communication is also recommended for Rolls Royce as it brings more clarity and transparency in decision making and other activities therefore, eliminates chances of discrimination. Chapter 6: Personal Reflective Statement 6.1) Reflection on Research method Use of various methods and philosophies are made by me to achieve research objectives on time. It includes use of Positivism philosophy together with deductive approach to conduct investigation in more systematic and practical way. Use of quantitative research methods are made be me to collect data in numeric firm that facilitates better presentation. To maintain the authenticity and reliability of data it is collected from both primary and secondary sources. 6.2) Research method could have been used The research method that could have been used includes qualitative research method that facilitates more insight and detailed information together with Interpretivism philosophy and inductive approach. 6.3) Areas for Further research It includes various other topic like gender equality, work life balance and enriched experience and other aspects of equality and diversity that meet my academic background and educational interest.
