Assignment 2 – Project Report and Presentation: The Role of the Victim in RJ

It has been well recognized that victims are typically misunderstood by the criminal justice system and other legal institutions that perpetuate a sense of powerlessness and re-victimization. In order to learn how to avoid these systemic pitfalls, students will begin by looking at the victims within the criminal justice system and their perspectives as they traverse through it.
As part of your RJ project and presentations, students will be expected to critically consider how we define and understand victims, their relationship to the state, the impacts of crime on primary and secondary victims, the power of forgiveness, the social dynamics of victimhood, coping strategies, their engagement with the justice system, various victims, services programs as it interplays with restorative justice.
