INTRODUCTION
Individual development is a plan that help employer to develop skills and knowledge of
their employees. It is mainly used to improve performance level of workers of the organisation.
Team development is a key essential element for a company which is required to perform
various activities in effective manner (Baxter and et. al., 2016). It helps team members to
communicate and stay focused of their duties. Organisational development is the main objective
of Human resource managers as it will lead it toward success. It is possible with the help of
members of various teams that are formulated to attain predetermine goals of a company.
Organisation chosen for this report is Tesco, which is a retail company and its headquarter is in
Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire, England, UK.
This project report covers knowledge, skills and behaviours that are required by HR
professionals, personal skills for employees, professional development plan for HR officer,
difference between organisational and individual learning, training and development, needs for
continuous learning and professional development, contribution of HPW to employee
engagement and competitive advantage and different approaches of performance management.
TASK 1
P1 Knowledge, skills and behaviours that are required by HR professionals
HR professionals: These are the persons who are responsible to control and direct
employees who are working within an organisation. They have authority to analyse all the
activities that are performed by individuals, teams or whole organisation (Brett and et. al., 2014).
In Tesco HR professionals are hired by owners to supervise all the persons who are working with
in an organisation and allot responsibilities top all of them. Different types of skills, knowledge
and behaviours are required for HR professionals. All of them are discussed below:
Knowledge of HR professionals: A human resource individual should have broad
knowledge of principles and various procedures of recruitment, training, selection, employee
benefits and compensation schemes. This helps to fulfil all the liabilities effectively.
HR professional in Tesco should have all the above mentioned knowledge but they
should also have good academics. In this organisation they are hired on the basis of qualification
and personal knowledge. Qualification which is required is degree of Masters of business
administration with HR specification from a well-recognised institution. Education and training

includes knowledge of various methods that are required while designing training programs and
providing instructions to individual employee of the organisation.
Skills for HR professionals: Following are the skills that are required for HR
professionals:
Leadership and active working skills: HR professional are required to have leadership
skills as they are responsible to control and direct employees and other members of the
organisation. They should always work actively so that they will be able to motivate
other employees of the company to work more effectively (Darcy and et. al., 2014).
Owners of Tesco want these skills in their HR professional to managers activities of the
organisation more effectively and manage performance of their employees. Leadership
skills helps them to make a control over various activities that are going to be performed
by employees.
Communication and effective thinking skills: Communication is the main skill which
is required for HR professional as they have to communicate with each employee of an
organisation and they have to listen queries of them. They are also liable to resolve
conflicts that occur among teams. Effective thinking is also a major skill for HR
professional as they have to make effective strategies and policies that are going to be
implemented in order to enhance work quality of whole organisation. In Tesco these
skills are analysed by employers while hiring HR professional to ensure that they will be
able to handle the work load which is going to be allotted to them.
Behaviours of HR professionals:
Curious: HR professionals should have curious nature which will help them to get
knowledge about new and effective things (Eaton, Roberts and Turner, 2015). There is a
main role of curiosity in enhancing qualitative information. It helps them to resolve huge
problems in less time because it is a tool which help in effective thinking.
Good thinker: HR professional should have good thinking ability which help them to
identify more and more effective strategies. This behaviour also helps them to be more
attentive about future problems that may take place. A good thinker will always think
many times before taking an action.
