Smart sensor networks are a crucial elements in the Internet of Things (IoT) based Smart city
plan that has to be implemented for Nelson city. The project researches and analyses the
emerging technology to have innovative solutions that may be implemented for smart city
development. Sensor networks are an integral part of Information Technology and Systems
and the project would provide an opportunity to develop and enhance IT skills in the areas of
networking, IoT, and information systems (Wang et al., 2018). It will also assist in the
exploration and development of research and management skills.
Background
Smart wireless sensor networks are the networks that are composed of the nodes capable of
sensing and controlling their respective environment. The sharing and transmission of
information is carried out through the wireless links that assists in the development of
interaction between people, systems, and environment. The data sets that are gathered by the
nodes in the sensor networks are then transferred to the sink that may utilize the data locally
or may connect to the other networks with the assistance of a gateway (Islam, Mukhopadhyay
& Suryadevara, 2017). The smart sensor networks will form an integral part in the smart city
plan for the Nelson city. It is because these networks will allow smart connectivity and
information exchange and will be utilized in the areas as smart buildings, environmental
monitoring, health care, security applications, surveillance activities, logistics,
transportations, and several other areas.

be essential to ensure that the security risks are detected, analysed, and mitigated.
Project Activities
The project will be executed in a series of five phased viz. project initiation, planning & data
collection, execution, control & monitoring, and project closure.
The first phase will include the start-up project activities in which the topic of the project as
Smart Sensor Networks for Smart City Plan is determined. Feasibility analysis is one of the
essential project activities that will be necessary to be conducted. The feasibility will be
determined on three aspects as technical, operational, and economic. The project will be
finalized only when the results of the feasibility study will be positive. The next project phase
will be planning and data analysis. The data will be necessary to research upon the smart
sensor networks and the project. The techniques that will be used for information gathering
will be interviews, domain analysis, and observations. Automatic analysis of the data sets will
be carried out using the automated data analysis tools. Literature review will be required to be
carried out so that the work done in the past may be analysed and the in-depth details of the
same may be obtained.
Nelson city is based upon a certain networking architecture that shall be reviewed to
understand the applicability and implementation of smart sensor networks. The analysis and
architecture design will be formed in the project execution phase. Infrastructural changes,
determination of topology, and the components involved will also be analysed. There may
also be security analysis that will be required to be done to have an understanding of the

Statement of Ownership
The project will provide smart sensor network architecture as one of the outcomes that shall
be owned by the organization implanting the network in Nelson city. Any of the changes,
risks, and issues shall be managed and handled by the organization.
