Chapter Two: Literature Review

Literature review is that part of the research section which contain all the secondary data of the

2.2 Main Body (with Headings and Sub-headings)
What is the concept of employee's retention within an organization?
In this view of Narayanan, Rajithakumar and Menon (2019), Employee retention is the
organization strategy which is used by the company to keep their talented staff for longer period
of time. This is used by the administration so that they can reduce the employee turnover within

the workplace and can create a positive working environment for their employee. This concept is
used by the company so that they can reduce their cost of hiring employee and can also gain
competitive advantages out of the. Managing employee is the hardest job which is done by the
HR department as they are the person who look for the human resource. To retain employee,
mangers need to design many strategy so that they can motivate the staff to work within the
organization. Employees are the assets of the business and their retention is important as if the
turnover keeps on increasing g then the goals cannot be achieves as well as productivity will also
reduces. It is more effective for the companies to retain the employee which is good for the
business rather than recruiting and orienting new employee in the venture. Employees
satisfaction and staff motivation are the two factor which decide whether the employee will
retain in the company(Yousuf and Siddiqui, 2019). Employee retention is regarded as the
organisational ability in which they prevent employee turnover so that number of leaving people
the job can be minimised. In order to increase business performance employee retention is
regarded as one of the prominent reason which helps the organisation to improve its
sustainability and business progression as well. Employee retention helps the organisation to
attain their goals and keeping of talented employees so that positive environment can be fostered.
The major role of employee retention is to develop competitive edge into the market and to
create work life balance as well. This is analysed that employee retention is the ability to retain
employees and in the same manner there are various drivers which are related with developing
employee retention within the organisation such as gaining opportunities by employees to see
growth in personal manner. On the other hand, by empowering responsibilities to employees
employee retention can be enhanced and in the same manner overall business can be developed
in desired manner. With the help of employee retention overall employee morale can be boosted
and this will lead the business to face their positive future development opportunities.
What are the impact of staff motivation schemes used by ASDA to gain higher employees
retention?
In the view of Dugovicova (2019), Staff motivation scheme directly impact in employee
retention. They both has positive relation if the employee is lee motivated then retention will be
high and if the staff is highly motivated then the turnover will be low. They both goes hand in
hand. ASDA uses various motivation scheme to retain their employee. One of the scheme which
is used by them is given financial reward to boost the morale. The company gives perks and

benefit to their staff in monetary term which help to motivate the employee and this also affect in
retention as the employee are earning extra benefits if that work productively. Reward scheme
are being using by the company to so that they cam motivate as well as retain staff. The other
scheme used by the ASDA is employee recognition strategy which help the company in greater
sense. The company identify the star performer of the month and then gives gift which force the
other employee also to work efficiently and increase their motivation. This will increase the
brand loyalty among the employee and will willingly work for the business for longer time
period (Pal, 2019). Employee motivation schemes may boost productivity and employee
engagement as with the help of such schemes employee may feel motivated and develop their
strength to work with optimal engagement. This is the major reason which helps the organisation
to involve their employee in decision making so that to take better and prominent decisions as
well. In the context of ASDA as the organisation is associated with retail business so their
employees are holding higher degree of importance as they are directly linked with overall
customers. When customers are treated well then this is a positive inclination for the organisation
in terms of growth and sustainability. On the other hand motivation schemes within the
organisation is something which makes employees satisfied rehanging the place where they are
working and this would easily develop sense of belongingness to employees and they could
easily be aligned with organisational objectives. Motivation schemes are helpful in promoting
sustainable long term motivation within employees and this means that scope of motivation
schemes are higher in which employees are assessed with the role to promote business with their
higher contribution.
Which employee's retention strategies adopted by ASDA to gain high quality of work?
According to Pandita and Ray (2018),There are various types of strategy that are adopted
by the ASDA to retain the employee as well as to gain high quality. First strategy they acquire is
providing positive feedback. This retention strategy help them as by providing feedback
employee will feel as part of the organization which will force them ton retain in the company
and can improve their work in more better way. Positive feedback should be given to the
employee on regular basis so that motivation will also boost. They also adopt the strategy of
health working environment because the working culture place a very important role in retention
and the quality of the work. Having a fun loving environment, initiative creativity, good
organization structure all play a role in providing effective work quality. To retain the employee

they also adopt the scheme of involving employee in decision making process. The ASDA staff
are being motivated to actively take part in the organization decision and take out good ides for
the company. This is done by the company as it will help them to gain trust on the enterprise and
feel like they are valued which also give the benefit of working in a more productive manner(Yi
and et. Al, 2021). There are various employee retention strategies that can be used by the
businesses in terms of managing the business and to develop high quality within the business as
well. These are the practices which are helpful in promoting the business in such a way that
organisational culture can be improved and at the same time business objectives can be attained.
In the context of ASDA as the organisation is associated with managing their business in retail
industry so their employees are having direct interactions with customers. In this manner for the
organisation this is significant that to involve employees in decision making so that to value
their employees and to make them a significant part of the organisation. With the help of
adopting hybrid workplaces ASDA may motivate their employees and retain them for longer
duration of time. In the current time, hybrid working is one of the significant aspect which is
used in the business so that to develop their employees and to acquire success as well. On the
other hand with the help of giving time to time appreciation to employees this will boost their
motivation and could be helpful in retaining them for longer time by motivating their morale.
Besides this, compensation plan is one of the major motivation scheme which is used within the
organisation so that to attract employees towards better working and would be helpful for the
business to acquire success opportunities. In order to render motivation to employees providing
them career path would be the another method that can be used by ASDA as the path to attain
higher quality of working and to retain employees as well.
What are the major factors which make employee' retention more challenging within ASDA?
As per Johnson, and Pike (2018), Many of the staff of the ASDA has a insecurity in term
of finance. This financial insecurity among them made it impossible for the company to retain
the employee for longer period. This insecurity also enhance the turnover rate in the business.
This factor is the most challenging factor despite of giving reward in term of monetary. There are
some employee in the company who think of money a lot which demotivate them and also their
productivity towards the work is also low which forces them ton leave the organization. The next
factor which influence the retention is work life balance. The majority of the employee of ASAD
is of view that it is impossible for them to maintain a proper balance between the work and the
