Employees are considered as the crucial part of the company as they support in the
growth and success of an entity in an efficient manner. Motivation has a direct impact on the
employee retention (Dweck and Molden, 2017). The present study is based on Lidl that is one of
the renowned supermarket chains of UK. It offers variety of products and services to the
customers of the country. The study will evaluate the impact of staff motivation on the retention
of employees within the organization.
Background of study:
Motivation refers to enhance the morale of the employees in order to perform a particular
tasks. It develops willingness among employee to perform the assigned task in an appropriate
way. In context of the given study, it is analyzed that how motivation can affect the retention of
employees at workplace.

Limitation of the study
The study is based on the motivation aspect and its impact of retention. It is quite difficult
to gather the opinion of the respondents. Apart from this, limited time and resources is also a
major limitation of the study that will directly affect the outcomes of the research work. Lack of
fund will also create constraint in the research study.
Scope of the study
In the present time, motivation is important to keep employees inspired towards the
assigned tasks (Maslow, 2019). The study will help in development of effective strategies in
order to motivate and encourages staff members to stay in the company for longer run. Further, it
will allow the researcher to develop significant knowledge regarding employee motivation and
retention.

According to Claire Woodridge, the concept of staff motivation can be defined as the
overall level of enthusiasm along with energy levels and commitments that provide assistance to
employee in being creative as well as enhance their ability to be productive. In addition to this,
the it is crucial for an organization to have motivated staff as they are correlated with an
organizations success. Although the concept of staff motivation is complex and difficult to
measure as well as difficult to control it is essential for a business top pay emphasis on
motivating its staff in order to attain the highest level of performance. Moreover, the concept of
staff motivation is contagious as if one employee is active and engaged at work it uplifts the
moral as well as motivation of others as well. This allows an organization to ensure that the staff
is motivated to accomplish set organizational goals and objective in a timely manner.
Furthermore, the overall concept of staff motivation is vital for an organization as it helps in the

The challenges faced by Lid while formulating staff motivation schemes to retain employees
According to Galli, 2020, there are ample of challenges face by the HR managers during
employee motivation. In organization, ample of people work together and they have different
opinions and thoughts. It is quite difficult to motivate each and every employee with similar
motivation strategies. It is analyzed that different individuals have different requirements hence
the managers are required to understand the needs & requirements of individuals in order to
motivate them in an efficient manner. Additionally, confidence improves the level of motivation
of employees. If employees are confident, they can perform the assigned work efficiently.
However, in case of low self-confidence, employees are likely to feel that they are not worthy

which affect their level of motivation profoundly. In Lidl, lack of communication is also a major
challenge that is being faced by the managers in employee motivation. For inspiring workforce,
it is imperative to know their area of interest. Due to lack of communication managers are unable
to identify the actual needs and requirements of the employees. It not only hampers the
relationship of managers and employees but also create constraint in motivation. The other major
issues is lack of clarity. To get support of workforce, it is important to give them clarity
regarding the goals, mission, of the organization (Nicholls, 2017). Due to this, they are not able
to maintain proper interaction with the staff members. Apart from this, there is also issue in
terms of designing the reward programs for the employees. For this purpose, managers need to
have proper information regarding the requirements of workforce. In Lidl, is quite complex for
the managers to collect the information of needs and preferences of the workforce. Therefore, the
company is facing ample of challenges in terms of staff motivation. These challenges will create
a direct impact on the retention of the employees at workplace.

In research, it is important to define the time frame in order to complete the research
work in timely manner. In this regard, Gantt chart is prepared that is a well-known project
management tool to manage the project work efficiently. It is a useful way to show the different

member regarding their roles and responsibilities in completion of the project work. In this

It is a step by step process that is implemented to gather, analyze as well as interpret the
data in an efficient manner. In context of the given research, the necessary steps are mentioned
below:
Research Philosophy: It is a belief regarding the way in which data related to a
particular topic or phenomenon should be gathered. There are two major philosophy are followed
in research which are positivism and interpretivism (De Jong and Schout, 2018). The present
study is based on positivism approach as it helps in collecting numerical information for the
successful completion of the research project.
Research Approach: It is a procedure which consist of different steps to methods of data
collection, analysis to interpretation and more. Inductive and deductive are the two major
research approaches (Politano, Walton and Roberts, 2017). In context of the given study,
deductive approach is followed as it is based on analyzing the existing phenomenon. It will help
in developing knowledge regarding the already exist framework.
Data Collection:
Data is crucial for research work as it helps in gaining detailed insights regarding a
particular topic. In this regard, two major methods of data collection are given below:
Primary: In primary data collection, raw and first-handed information is gathered by the
researcher. Here, the information is highly authentic and reliable due to less or no intervention of
any external party (Liamputtong, 2019). Questionnaire has been prepared in the given scenario in
order to collect the information from respondents.
Secondary: To collect the in-depth and detailed information, various secondary sources
have been used. For current research work, data has been collected through authentic and reliable
websites, publications, articles and more.

Sample Size: For the present study, probability sampling is taken into consideration. In
this regard, 30 employees of Lidl have been chosen as the sample. They will provide necessary
information for the completion of research work.
Quantitative data: It is related with the use of statistical and numerical techniques in
order to analyze the available information. Use of statistical tools helps in analyzing the
information in an appropriate way (Lai and Palmer, 2018).
Qualitative data: Unlike Quantitative data, here, in-depth and detailed information is
gathered to make valuable inferences in future period of time. The major sources of qualitative
data collection are focus group, interview, case study and more.
Ethical issues: There are several ethical issues have been faced during the research
project. These issues are related to maintain confidentiality, data analysis, conflicts and more.
These ethical issues affected the research project profoundly.

strategies in order to motivate the workforce. As per the response of participants, 12 individuals
out of 30 admit that training and motivation plays an important role in staff motivation. Other 10
respondents consider growth opportunities as one of the major strategies of Lidl for employee
motivation. Rest 8 individuals are in the favor of monetary benefits that are being provided by
the company to motivate the employees. It is analyzed that majority of respondents are in the
favor of training and development to as one of crucial strategies to enhance the motivation level
of staff.

respodenst consider that lack of clarity is the main problem of motivation. Additionally, there are
7 respondents who admit thar the managers of Lidl face issue related the designing of reward
programs.

Recommendations
From the above-information, it is found that Lidl is facing several issues in terms of staff
motivation. These challenges have a profound impact on employee retention. It is enhancing the
employee turnover rate in the company that will affect the prestige of the organization in future
period of time. In this context, the necessary recommendations are mentioned below:
 It is suggested that Lidl is required to maintain proper communication with the staff
members in order to know their issues. It will help the company to gain familiarity with
needs and requirements of the employees so that they can create suitable strategies
accordingly. Through communication, it is possible to resolve the issues which is
important to maintain positive relationship with the employees.
 Lidl is required to design appropriate reward programs to address the needs and
requirements of the employees. They need to design monetary and non-monetary
programs in order to rewarded the employees for their contribution in the company. It
will make employees a crucial part of the company that will minimize the retention rate.
 In current time, training and development is highly important in order to enhance the
capability of workforce. Here, appropriate training programs improve the efficiency of
workforce and make them enable to accept challenging roles. It will motivate the
workforce hence they will stay with the organization for longer duration.

Conclusion
Through the above-mentioned information, it is monitored that motivation is a crucial
function to get the desire work done efficiently. Motivates employees are likely to stay positive
and perform the assigned tasks willingly. Additionally, it is analyzed that company adopt
different strategies such as growth opportunities, training and development to motivate the
workforce. However, they also face various issues in terms of lack of clarity, communication and
more. Further, it is concluded that the organization is able to motivate the staff members that
further contributes in retention.
