Abstract
Etihad Airways are second largest airline company in the United Arab Emirates after Emirates, and they
are famous for their high-quality luxury services and comfortable flying experience. The recruitment and
selection process of the corporation is significantly efficient, and it focuses on selecting a qualified candidate
for the right job. The company conducts various interviews and tests to assess knowledge, skills, and behavior
of the candidates and select a best potential candidate as per the requirement of job.
Introduction
Etihad Airways is the second largest airline corporations in the United Arab Emirates (after Emirates),
and it was founded in 2003. The company is a flag carrier of the UAE, and its head office is situated in Khalifa
City, Abu Dhabi. In a week, Etihad Airways operate more than one thousand flights, and the company has
revenue of US$9.02 billion in 2015. The corporation has more than 26,000 employees, and they are known for
excellent service and luxury flying experience. This report will evaluate the recruitment and selection policy of
Etihad Airways and assess their staffing strategies.
Background
Etihad Airways started its operations in 2003, and since then the corporation has more than 120 planes,
with approximately 200 more on firm order, they also have two Airbus A380s (Balakrishnan, Balakrishnan,
Jayashree, Jayashree, Michael & Michael, 2011). The company is second flag carrier of UAE, and it was
established by a royal decree that was passed by Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayad Al Nahyan (Figure 1). In just three
years, the company provided its services in 30 destinations, and they set a target expanding their services in 70
locations by 2010. As per World Travel Awards in London, Etihad Airways won the “World’s Leading Airline”
awards in 2009. The main characteristic of the corporation is the quality of their services for which company
employs qualified employees (Etihad, 2017).

Staffing Assessment of Etihad Airways
Employment Planning
This process is conducted by management to ensure they have a right number of employees with
required qualification working at right posts. A corporation can efficiently achieve its organizational objectives
by employing a qualified person at the right job. The employment planning in Etihad airways includes an
arrangement of eligible employees in various posts including, cabin crew, manager quality assurance, captain,
call center agent, lead aircraft engineer, flight instructor, first officer, ground operations, lounge team and many
others (Alwahaishi, Snasel & Nehari-Talet, 2009).
Recruitment Policies
Etihad’s recruitment policy focuses on selecting the best candidate for a post which requires a proper
evaluation of candidates’ skills. The company uses a combination of behavioral based interview questions,
written application, and testing or presentation to evaluate candidates on a merit-based system.
Employment Advertising
The company mostly uses online platforms to advertise and list their job opening and requirements. The
job advertisement includes post specification, appropriate requirements and detailed reason for seeking
professional individuals (Figure 2).
Job Application
Etihad accepts both online and offline job applications, potential candidates can post their application to
the nearby office, or they can mail or upload their application on the online platform of the company. For
positions such as cabin crew or flight instructor, the candidates can upload their application online in Microsoft
Word or PDF format along with a passport size and one full-length photograph attached to the Curriculum
Vitae. The credential includes qualification certificates, experience letters, references, and others; the document
size should not be more than the limit specified on the online portal (Maszczynski, 2017). The company also
asks candidates to write a short essay on their dream vacation destination.

Hiring Cost Analysis
The hiring cost of Etihad airways includes expenses such as an advertisement, evaluation, training and
other. Corporation spends around 35 percent of the operating costs over its employees which include
recruitment costs as well. The cost of salary plus benefits of Etihad’s cabin crew employees are around AED
15,000, and for senior managers, it is around AED 35,000. The salary of human resource department is
included in hiring cost which is the average between AED 17,000 to 31,000 (Glassdoor, 2017). The training
program of cabin crew staff cost around US$14 million (Etihad, 2014).
Applicant Interviews
The interview is one of the critical steps of recruitment procedure because it ensures that right person
gets selected for the right post. The interview questions are designed to obtain necessary information regarding
candidates’ skills, knowledge, and behavior. Most of the posts in Etihad airways require employees’ interaction
with customers and specific qualities are essential for their behavior such as politeness, friendliness, and
positivity which are analyzed by HR department in the interview. Many times interviews are based on tests
given by candidates and interviewer evaluates applicants based on the result of such tests.
Reference Check
Etihad’s HR department uses a reference check form to check candidates’ references; the form collects
the necessary information from applicants regarding their references. The candidates can give references of
their previous employer, schools, colleges and other sources.
Testing and Evaluation
The selected candidates go through different medical examinations which assess their ability to perform
a particular job. The company evaluates English speaking ability, computer knowledge and other skills of
candidates before assigning them a specific position (Etihad, 2017).
Background Checks
Etihad’s HR department checks education, criminal records, license record, credit history, and medical
history of the candidates.

Selection Criteria
After passing all the tests, the candidates who are selected are assigned to particular tasks by the HR
department; specific training is provided to workers who perform any technical job. The salary and benefits
package is given to the worker, and other details are provided to them as well, including organization
regulations, dress code, timing, vacation criteria and other (Figure 3) (Etihad, 2017).
Conclusion
To conclude, Etihad Airways’ recruitment procedure significantly efficient and it focuses on selecting
the right candidate for the right job. The process is divided into multiple parts, each of which is assessed and
evaluate the candidates’ ability to perform specific tasks. Finally, as per my recommendations, the company can
improve their recruitment procedure by including computerized tests which ensure fair assessment of
candidates based on their analytical and logical skills.
