The study explores the concept of sustainability, the various sustainable practices adopted by Marriot, and the advantages gained by the hotel. INTRODUCTION
Overview of the topic
Sustainability refers to the ability of the organisation to use their resources in such a
manner that the current as well as future need can be fulfilled in effective manner. By using
various sustainable practices company maintain the natural environment and support the
environment in greater way. There are three pillars of sustainability which are economy, society
and environment. There are some sustainable practices that can be used by hotel such as save
energy, using reusable product, reducing carbon footprints and many more (Asadi and et. al,
2020).
To conduct the research, the chosen hotel is Marriot. Marriot is one of the leading
international hotel chain which was founded in the year 1957 by J. Willard Marriot. It’s
headquarter is in Bethesda, United states.
Significance of the topic
The present research is significant because it provides benefits to various stakeholder such
as organisation, managers, researcher and scholar. In perspective of scholar this investigation
will provide advantage of enhancing their academic skill. Foe the researcher the investigation is
helpful as this research will act as a foundation (Sharma and et. al, 2022). Mangers will gin
advantage as they will get to know about various sustainable practices that can be used by them.
In last organisation will get to know the importance of sustainability in order to improve
organisational performance and productivity.
Research problem
The main problem that is identified in the existing research is that, hospitality industry
faces the issue of identify the right sustainable practice for their hotel so that they can improve
their performance (Guix and Font, 2020). In the current investigation mangers are not aware
about the different kinds of practices which are necessary for them to fulfill the current as well as
future need. Thus, it is very important for them to analysis their business and adopt right
sustainable practices for their hotel.

The main reason for conducting the research is to gain detailed understanding about the
topic. This research will also highlight various sustainable practices used by the hospitality
industry. The current investigation will also help in achieving dual objective which are personal
and professional (Murphy and et. al, 2018). In respect to personal, the above investigation will
develop various research skills in me so that investigation can be completed systematically. On
the other side, in respect to professional prospective it will aid in developing the professional
career in sound manner.
Research scope
The current research focuses on carrying out the detailed data about the sustainable practices
adopted in order to improve organisational performance of hospitality industry. The study will
highlight the different practices used by hotel and the advantages they gained by it. The scope of
the present investigation is limited to 20 managers from the Marriott hotel (Sokiyna and Aqel,
2020).

What is the concept Sustainability within hospitality industry of UK?
As per the view of Toli and Murtagh (2020), sustainability is growing concept in resent
time were scarcity of resources has increased. Sustainability means fulfilling the current needs of
the company without compromising the future generation needs and wants. There are three
pillars of sustainability which are economic, environmental and social. These three pillar stands
for profit, planet and profit. In current era hotels are focusing more on sustainability and
adopting this concept in their business operation. This is because it helps the company to
improve their business performance by enhancing their productivity. Many hospitality industries
are laying stress to adopt various sustainability practices in their company which suits them best.
This is because the issue related to environment and social are increasing so reduce this
organisation are adopting sustainability practices. With the help of this hotels are achieving their
vison and mission in given time period by reducing the wastage of resources and material
(Tsaples and Papathanasiou, 2021).
What are the various sustainable practices adopted by Marriot to improve organisational
performance and productivity?
According to the Carvajal-Arango and et. al (2019), it is very vital for Marriot to adopt
sustainable practices in their business because this helps them to perform well as compared to
others. There are various sustainable practices which are adopted by Marriot hotel in their
business operation. Some of them are:
Creating a green team: The foremost strategy adopted by Marriot is building a green
team for each department so that they can suggest employee about the ecofriendly practices they
can use to improve their performance. This helps them to enhance the commitment towards
achieving long term vision in sustainable manner.
Mitigating carbon footprints: Another practice that they implement is reducing the carbon
footprints by using natural resources such as green house, reuse and recycle and many more. The
carbon footprints can be reduced by minimising the fuel and diesel in their operation (Arora,
2019).

Using reusable dishes and mugs: The hotel is providing paper straw and grass made
plates so that they can minimize the use of plastic in their business. They also use glass jar inset
of plastic mugs to serve cereals and yogurts to their buyers.
What are the advantages gained by Marriot by adopting different sustainability practice within
their organisation?
As per the view of Huseien and et. al (2020), there are different benefits that is acquired by
Marriot while adopting the practices of sustainability in their business operation. Some of the
advantage they gained are as:
 Improved business performance: The first advantage that Marriot receive in
improvised performance. With the help of sustainable practices company are allocating
and utilising the resources in right manner which helps them to fulfil the needs in greater
manner by keeping in mind the future needs (Uyl-de Groot and Löwenberg, 2018).
 More productivity: Another benefit that they gained is more productivity as by
sustainability company are focusing on environment which helps them to increase
productivity by saving energy.

METHODOLOGY
Research methodology is one of the vital chapter in the research report. This section helps
the investigator to attain aims and objective in appropriate a manner (Bairagi and Munot, 2019).
Research methodology can be defined as the systematic process to identify, analyse and interpret
data. Research methodology is further divided into sub parts which are discussed below:
Research philosophy: There are two types of research philosophies that are positivism and
interpretivism. In the current investigation positivism philosophy will be used. The reason is that
it will analysis and identify objective data in more valid manner (Lai, 2018).
Research approach: There are two research approach: deductive and inductive. In present
research researcher will be choosing deductive approach. The main benefit is that it will evaluate
existing hypothesis with the help of numerical information (Ledford and Gast, 2018).
Research strategy: Survey, action research, grounded theory and many more are some
types of research strategy. As per the existing investigation, researcher will be selecting survey
research strategy. The benefit is that it will collect mass data in single time from larder
participants.
Research choice: It is divided into two parts which are quantitative and qualitative. In the
current research quantitative data will be used. The main reason for this is that it will gathers and
analysis numerical information in less time and cost (Säfsten and Gustavsson, 2020).
Time horizon: Time horizon is classified into two kinds which are cross sectional and
longitudinal. As per the research topic, investigator will be selecting cross sectional time horizon.
The advantage of this it will gathers data in short time as well as multiple variables can also be
observed.
Data collection: Primary and secondary are the two data collection method. Primary data is
the fresh data gathers directly from the respondent and secondary data is second hand
information which is gather by someone else but used by multiple people. In present
investigation, both primary and secondary data will be used. To collect primary data
questionnaire will be developed and for secondary data online site and books will be used
(Eisend and Kuss, 2019).
Sampling: Probability and non-probability are the two sampling technique to take out
sample. In existing investigation researcher will be choosing probability sampling, the reason is

it will select sample in equal and fair manner. The ample size will be 20 mangers from Marriot
hotel (Daniel, Kumar and Omar, 2018).
CONCLUSION
From the above gathered data it is being concluded that it is very important for the
hospitality industry to adopt various sustainable practices in their business. With the help of
these practice they can fulfil their current expectation as well as future needs and wants. It is also
being concluded that sustainability helps the hotels to improve their business performance and
productivity. There are various advantages that can be gained by hotel by adopting the concept of
sustainability such as higher profit, strong market image, competitive advantage and many more.
