MAIN BODY
Task 1
Analyse the similarities and differences between teaching, coaching and mentoring and
summarize the responsibilities that your role entailed
Teaching: It is a profession that assists mentees. It is a process that helps mentees to learn. It
plays a vital role in life of a mentee. A teacher is a person that understands the needs and
wants of mentees and provides them knowledge (Palmer, 2018). It is not easy to understand

the mentees and make them understand the concepts and lessons of life. Teacher helps to
motivate, guide and provide direction to the mentee.
Mentoring: It is a process to maximise the performance of an individual by helping the
person to learn the concept rather than to teach him. It is a continuous process and
involvement of both parties is important. It is seen that the mentor prepared questions and ask
them. The lesson plan is created and the help to guide the mentee. A mentor plays attention
and solves all the problems that come in the life of mentee (Bentley, Workman and Overby,
2017). It can be said that mentoring plays a role vital in learning and development of
individual. It can be better understood with example. At the time of my training a mentee was
assigned to me and I was a mentor. I use to have regular interaction with the mentee. I
realised that he is lacking in IT skills, organising skills and also academic skills so I worked
upon improving communication skills. I as a mentor started taking sessions so that the skills
can be enhanced.
Coaching: It is a process that helps to identify the needs and wants of mentee. It helps to
know about the strength and weakness of the mentees and then teach him.
Similarities among teaching, coaching and mentoring are mentioned below:
No doubt all of these activities are different but the main aim behind them is similar, the most
common elements are discussed below:
A learning conversation: Me as a mentor focus on learning of the mentee. The aim is to
make the mentee know and grab more knowledge and learn new things (Grant, 2020).
Making them learn will help the mentee.
Agreed outcomes: I being a mentor always focus and promises the mentee to help them to
achieve the agreed outcomes. All of them make efforts by understanding the mentee and help
him to achieve the objectives in the life. They promise them and then fulfil the outcomes. As
when I was a mentor I analysed that I use to work on the goals that are decided at the initial
level. Then let the mentees work as per the goals and achieve the desired outcomes.
Focus on learning and teaching: All these activities basically focus on making the mentee
learn new concepts and various aspects that are important in the life. All of them focus on
teaching them proving those lessons. I as a mentor used to take care of the learning of a

mentee and make all efforts so that they can learn. As the IT skills are not good I used to
focus on them.
Mutual benefit: Teaching, mentoring and coaching always benefits the mentee as the
process leads in development of the mentee. All these activities focus on proving them lesson
and motivating them to achieve goals and objectives in life(Jenkin, 2020). Along with that the
mentor and teacher gets benefit as it is achievement for the mentor, teacher or coach. All of
them are involved and get benefit from the success of mentee.
Confidentiality: It is analysed that I always focuses on maintain confidentiality. All the
personal and important information related to the mentee is kept confidential. They never
disclose information and data of mentee with anyone. No doubt I did know that my mentee
lacks various skills like IT skills, academic skills and organising skills I never shared it with
others and motivated my mentee to develop these skills
Above mentioned points shows the similarities among the three activities. All the mentors,
coaches and teachers are important in the life of a mentee. It is seen that all of them focus on
the development of mentee.
There are many differences between the roles, all roles have their own responsibilities. The
difference between coach, teacher and mentor on the basis of their responsibilities is
mentioned below:
