3INFORMATION SYSTEM PROJECT MANAGEMENT
1.0 Introduction and Background of the Project
The project under focus in this assignment is the development and implementation of
cloud based database for Telstra. Telstra is an Australian company that provides
telecommunication services in Australia. In their previous operational system, most of the
processes like data entry, bill processing, payments, bill generation and others were done
manually with minimal use of automated systems. This system was causing significant problems
as the customer base of the company increased and the system could no more be handled
efficiently manually. Hence, Telstra decided to undertake a project for cloud based database
implementation that would significantly solve the main problems faced by the operations of the
company. The project was approved in 2017 and was completed in April 2018.
In this project report, the major features of the project like scope, schedule, budget, cost
benefit, risks and others have been analyzed and discussed.
2.0 Project Scope and Objectives
The main scope of the project involved the development of cloud platform, development
of cloud based database and migration of the business data and operations to the cloud database.
The objectives of the project were as follows.
To make the system operations much more efficient and faster
To reduce operational costs due to too many human resources working on similar
operation set
To reduce the need for physical storage spaces for the various types of data

follows.
Risk Identified Mitigation Action Taken
Cyber Security Risk Suitable firewalls were installed before the
migration of data, anti-virus software was used to
block any unauthorized access and broken files
Scope Creep From the start, a clear plan was developed with
specifically defined scope statement and project
team duties and responsibilities
Budget Risk Market analysis was done and possible price
changes were considered in the final budget
User Acceptance Feedbacks from the service users were taken and
the benefits were specified to them regarding the

7.0 Project Outcomes and Benefits Gained
After the cloud based database was ready, all the business data including business
statistics, service details, customer data, financial statistics and others were migrated to the
cloud. Although there were risks regarding the security of the data, no major problems were
faced as proper actions were taken from the start. After migration was complete and the system
was put online, significant changes have been noted in the operations of Telstra. The processing
of the data, entry of new data, data calculations and others have been found out to be much more
efficient and faster and no significant human interference is now required as most of the process
has been automated and accurate. Furthermore, this has been much more convenient for the
customers as they can now pay bills online, generate online receipt anytime and view their
service usage details whenever they want instead of waiting for customer service to respond.
8.0 Conclusion
Finally, it can be concluded that the project was successful for Telstra as all the
objectives were successfully fulfilled by the project. Moreover, the project did not cross the
estimated budget for the project and was also completed within a reasonable time schedule.
