1LABOR RELATIONS
The purpose of this assignment is to demonstrate the proper idea of the role of the unions
in Canada in terms of the public employees and their labor relations. The union that has been
chosen for this paper is the Canadian Union of Public Employees. This union was founded in the
year 1963 (Cupe.ca 2019).
The main purpose of forming this union was to bring all the public sector employees
under one roof and provide them all sorts of facilities and amenities within the country. This has
taken all the employees of the non-profit and para-public sector employees under their security.
Almost 650,000 employees are affiliated under this union and this is the largest union in the
country of Canada (Cupe.ca 2019). The President of this union is Mark Hancock. The location of
the office of this union is at Ottawa in Ontario. The union is affiliated to the Canadian labor
Congress.
The union has several functions to complete and definitely it has some future plans for
providing the employees with the better facilities. The union mainly provides the different sorts
of medical facilities to the affiliated employees. The Pharmacare Plan is a very appreciable
initiative by the union (Levinson 2013). They have the medical and health care plans for the
children of the employees as well. The child care plans have been utilized by the union in the
best ways so it can provide the proper security. The Safer Skies program is also an important
function of the CUPE. The passenger safety aspects have been focused mainly by the CUPE. The
relationships with the employees have also been much proactive since the pension plans have
been initiated by the CUPE officials for the retired persons from different departments. CUPE is
also looking to implement some plans for the future development. They might look to provide
the needed training to all the employees. The literacy drive and providing the basic education is
regarded as most integral factors for the overall development. The union is also trying to enhance
