2LABOUR RELATIONS
Introduction
Canadian Union Public Employees is a trade union body that intrigues to deal with the
interest of the public sector employees. However, in recent times the organisation is willing to
incorporate the non-profit and semi-public sectors in order to safeguard the rights of the
employees in those organisation as well. In this context, it can be stated that the Canadian Union
Public Employees is considered to be the largest union with a member strength of 650,000
(alberta.cupe.ca, 2019). This trade union body has its roots in Alberta where in 1951 where 23
delegates of 9 local unions felt the need of a governing body to settle the interest of the public
sector employees (alberta.cupe.ca, 2019). Currently, the CUPE Alberta has 36,000 members
with an aim to secure the standard of living and safe working conditions for the public sector
employees.
Significant events
There are three significant events that helped CUPE Alberta to host the interests of the
public sector employees effectively. At first, raising voice for protecting bargaining equality
was an important event organised by the CUPE Alberta. The purpose of this event is to set up
equitable and inclusive workplaces for the locals in Alberta and fight for equality in workplace
(cupe.ca, 2019). In this regard, CUPE Alberta tried to put emphasis on the contract provisions,
requiring accommodation for the workers. Besides this, incorporating healthy life standard for
the families of the employees the bargaining equality event played a significant role.
In addition to this, CUPE Alberta initiated programs for the retirement security of the
public sector employees in Canada. There are over 11c million candidates all over Canada who
