1. OSDS Architecture Evaluation:
DSI or Department of Spatial Information provides its data services
through the DSI Online Spatial Delivery System or OSDS. In order to improve
these services, there are various approach that can be followed.
Advantages and disadvantages for using IaaS for OSDS
Advantages:
There are several advantages of using IaaS approach. The scalability of
IaaS is very high providing a lot of flexibility and reducing the efforts of the IT
companies who need not install or add new software or hardware
(Rittinghouse & Ransome, 2016). The IaaS model provides an entire IT
infrastructure to the company to work with. The IaaS provider has their own
data center to provide the necessary processor, hard drive, memory, and
even routers, firewalls, backup software and others. Provision and
implementation of projects gets much easier.
Disadvantages:
IaaS shows a lot of dependency on the provider to provide almost
everything. This is a problem as any problem with the provider can lead to
breakdown of the entire IT infrastructure. This makes it even harder to
change providers when needed. Connections to the servers, internet, and
backups can cause a lot of problem because their accessibility may get

hampered (Ali, Khan & Vasilakos, 2015). Security must be provided to the
provider as well so as to prevent any kind of loss or issues.
Advantages and disadvantages for using PaaS for OSDS
Advantages:
PaaS or Platform as a service has a lot of advantages as well. This is
very cost efficient as the platform is available. The cost of hardware,
software and maintenance can be reduced to a certain extent thus
increasing the savings (Marinescu, 2017). With the availability of several self-
operated applications, the speed of development of software increases a lot
and so does the speed of delivery, thus increasing profit. The software and
systems are automatically updated to ensure smooth functioning and the
scalability is also very good.
Disadvantages:
This approach is also much dependent on the provider and any
problem with the provider will cause issues, even if the provider is reliable
(Benzekki, El Fergougui & Elbelrhiti, 2016). Having data backups to support
the IT platform in case of that is very important. Another problem is that if
the infrastructure is old but the platform is new, then the compatibility of the
system is difficult. Hence, the infrastructure must also be updated regularly
which is costly if IaaS is not used. PaaS is available to a lot of public users
who are accessing same resources as the IT Company and thus the security
risks are also high.
