Theories of Communication
Health and social care department is the very much sensitive department, where staffs members
of these departments have to deal with such clients or patients who have different mindsets.
However, if the communication is not effective between the staff members and service users than
it might influence the connection between several parties and from the patient context; it might
happened that treatment quality would be hindered. Thus, to improve the service quality it is
necessary for the staff to work upon their communication skills and evaluate the measures, which
help in improving communication (Schiavo, 2013). Several theories are there that would help in
understand the significance of interaction in social and health care.
Behavioural theory is considered one of the significant theories, which helps the most in
improving communication skills. Behavioral theory helps in understanding that everyone has
different expression and feeling, desire and idea procedure that might influence behavioral
feature and communication too. It is very much important in heath department that staff should
communicate in a way, which is more appropriate from the patient point of view because this
will develop confidence in the patients and improve the quality of treatment. This theory
explains that employees of health department or any other organization are devoted and
understand that, what are employee responsibilities and what are the requirements of the
employee than it will be huge step in improving the skill of communication. The theory also
explains that people have several differences, which is also necessary to be measured while
creating communication with the persons (Glanz, et. al., 2010).
The main problem with the patients is that they are already disturb and having different mindset
due to their disease, now effective communication from the staff can help in change the mindset

of the patients and give strength to them to fight with the disease and to overcome their
behavioral challenges. In health department, the staff should be soft spoken and always spread
positivity among the patients and never show aggression in front of patients. Effective
communication includes both verbal and non-verbal communication because there are various
patients who cannot speak or write but have ability to deliver their statement through gestures.
So employees should be trained enough to understand gesture and replies to them through
gestures. Therefore, behavioral communication theory actually has a significant impact in health
and social care (Glanz, et. al., 2010).
It is important for the employees to not be aggressive in front of the patients because it put
negative impact on the patient. Social and health care setting contains the verbal and non-verbal
communication, gestures, sign and code language comes in non-verbal communication. There
are several patients, who are unable to speak and write, these patients talk through the sigh and
try to explain their views through gestures. Sometimes gestures have more impact than words,
which would be helpful in solving the issue.
The employees should not be aggressive; they should listen to others and need to keep patience
while handling the problems and weird behavior of patients. It includes both verbal and non-
verbal communication within the health and social care sector. The non-verbal communication
includes the gestures of the patients and their relatives. Sometimes expressions put more impact
than the words and the issues could be resolved easily. Thus, the behavioral theory has huge
relevance with the effective communication in health and social care

of persons or of the companies. The beliefs, culture and values, which have been innate inside
the company, is accountable for the process of communication. The culture and value includes
giving esteem to other’s judgment, giving esteem to other’s values and the most importantly
work does by the values and cultures that bringing every single persons at the same stage or
giving equal opportunity to everyone within the organization. For the effective communication,
process that values and cultures must be positive because if this works in opposite direction then
it can hamper the work and image of the organization (Ting-Toomey, 2012).
The main example for it to understand it more clearly is that if in an organization the way of
thinking of the employees towards the other caste, sex, religion, creed, gender etc, creating
differences among the employees then it will become the discrimination. Firstly, single persons
get involved in the activities of discriminatory, with this there are two kinds of affects can be
realized in the communication process. First are the persons who make groups of same religion,
caste, religion, gender in the organization and other is that the differentiation towards individual
might take places. It is clearly understand from both the cases, that value; culture and attitude
are not correctly innate by that it becomes hurdle in the communication process. Discrimination
is considered major factor that affects the communication within the organizations. For the better
and effective communication these practices must be avoided and create equality environment in
the organization (Castells, 2013).
One more case that is associated to respect or reverence. It is obvious that single persons must
respect to each other thoughts and working plan. The most important for effective value and
culture, is that persons respect to each other and have attitude to give respect to other people and
try to understand other's thoughts and then evaluate them. If communication process is not
running effectively in the organization, then it states that level of respect between the employees
