Importance of Skills in Personal and Professional Life

Executive Summary
A person's self concept is their understanding of knowing
that who they are and what are the skills they have which make
them differ and unique from others. There are so many skills that
are essential to have in professional life as well as in personal life.
This present study will show the importance of some skills such
as: Focus & concentration skill, team working skill, negotiation or
compromising skill and effective communication skill. All these
skills play an important role in an individual life because all these
skills supports them in performing well and in an effective way.
This report will also show about some tools that helps person in
analysing their skills such as feedback. Feedback is the best tool
by which an individual can make sure about their strengths and
weakness. The main aim of developing and having these skills is
to achieve goals and improve performance at workplace by
reducing disputes and other work based problems. Personal
development plan also provides a framework that shows a
particular area in which a person want to improve its strengths
and remove this weaknesses.

What is the core skill to develop?
Team working or collaboration skill: Team working can be defined as a process of
collaboratively with a group of people for achieving goals and complete tasks in an effective
manner. It is an important skill that I am good at but I need to develop it more. Team working
skill include guiding, helping and sharing views and opinion willingly and openly. I need to
more focus on this skill as it helps in improving my performance at workplace. Collaboration
and working with others is the best way of improving relationship with others and improving
overall performance.
Why is this core skill important? Why did I select this skill to reflect on? (use relevant

Team working skills play a vital role in personal life as well as in professional life. It is very
important for people as it can reduce the chances of conflicts because all the employees
work with the help of each other. It helps them in improving strong relationship among all

employees. It is beneficial for a company and manager because it improves and create a
happy working environment. All the members have willingness to share their views when
they work together so it increases their skills and knowledge. As I need to improve this skill
and with the help of Belbin team role inventory theory I can improve this skill because this
theory and model focus on collaboration and team work (Meslec and Curşeu, 2015). This
theory has some principles and elements such as: Coordinator and team workers.

I analysed my team working skill and I found that I am good at this skill and It is my main
strength at workplace. For confirming and analysing my skill I took feedback from my seniors
and tutors and they said that I am good in this skill. Feedback is an important and the best
way of analysing own performance and skills (Dell, Longo and Hay, 2016). They also think
that I work with team members and it is my strength which improve my performance.
Can you identify any contradictions from your analysis above? For example, is there a
match between how you see yourself and how others see you, or not?
As I took feedbacks from my tutors in order to know my effectiveness and performance in
context to team working skill. I got to know that they also think the same as me. I think that it
is my strength which make me able to work in an effective manner. My seniors also think that
with the help of this skill I can improve myself and achieve my determined goals. So there is
no contradiction and difference in the thinking of my tutors and my own thinking.
How might this skill help me in the future? (use references to support your argument)
This skill is very effective and important not only in the present but also in the future. It
creates an healthy environment which increase trust and loyalty. Loyalty is very important for
reducing conflicts and disputes from workplace so it will help me in the future as it will keep
me away from disputes. I will be happy by which I will be able to focus on my work. It will
improve my concentration power that will reduce the chances of errors and will lead
successful and effective outcomes (Dong and et.al., 2017). It will also provide me an
opportunity of learning.

What is the core skill to develop?
Effective communication and public speaking: It is an act and process of conveying
message and informations to others. In another words it is a procedure of speaking with
people with the aim and purpose of motivating, informing and communicating. I think I am
good at communication skill and I can communicate my views and informations to other in an
effective manner. It is very important skill that helps me at workplace. Miscommunication and
ineffective communication creates various problem as most of the time it becomes the
reason of workplace conflicts.

Public speaking and effective communication play a significant role at workplace and in
personal life. I selected this skill because communication is very important for working
effectively. Without communication no one can work as they do not have the proper
information that what they need to do. It improves the morale of employees. With the help of
Black & Mouton's managerial grid theory I can improve this skill and make it more better
(Amponsah, 2019). This grid has various elements that focus on solving each and every
types of work based problems by adopting different leadership style in an effective manner.
