1.1 Introduction to theme
The Pearson-set theme for use with Level 4 Unit 6: Managing a Successful Business Project is;
Equality and diversity in the workplace
Equality is relevant in all workplaces, regardless of whether the business employs two people
or two hundred people, irrespective of whether they work remotely, in an office, a warehouse
or on a shop floor. It is about ensuring that everybody has the same access to the same
opportunities without any discrimination. Diversity takes into account differences between
people and groups of people, by placing a positive value on those differences. A diverse and
inclusive work place values people’s different backgrounds, knowledge, skills, and
experiences, and uses these differences to create a productive and effective workforce.
Managing both equality and diversity is equally important as it impacts on all the employees
working in an organisation. Business cases have proven that biases and discrimination within the
workplace can impede business growth and productivity and therefore, many businesses look
beyond any legal considerations and policies to effectively promote equality and diversity to
improve productivity, opportunity, and competitiveness.
1.2 Topic Selection
Tutors must choose one topic from the list provided below and decide which type of project is
most suitable for a small-scale research project. All students must complete the same topic
and project type chosen by the tutor. However, if delivering to different cohorts of students,
tutors may select a different topic and project type for each cohort.
The Assignment Guidance document for Unit 6: Managing a Successful Business Project
provides additional support and guidance for both tutors and students.
Topics
1. How have companies responded to current issues of equality and diversity in the
workplace? e.g. gender pay gap, sexual harassment, gender divide in leadership.
2. What types of strategies and initiatives do companies put in place to build a diverse
and inclusive workforce?
3. How do company policies on equality and diversity translate in to an employee’s
day to day activity?
4. What issues and challenges may arise out of equality and diversity in the workplace
and what measures could be taken to resolve them?
