INTRODUCTION
Operational management refers to a focus on the practices that is designed to monitor and
manage all the processes within the production and the distribution of products and services. The
product and creation and the service development are the largest activities that operation
management mainly focuses on (McFadden, Stock and Gowen III, 2015). The primary goals of
the operation management is to manage purchase, monitor inventory and preserving the quality.
The analysis of the company's internal process is also included in the operation management.
The supply chain management and the logistics are the two terms that for operation management.
In both areas' operation management has firm foundations. For an instance in order to meet
demand of the customers the understanding of global trend in supply chain management can be
useful. The careful planning of resources can be done with the help of logistics. In order to fulfil
the strategic goals of the business the operation management can be used.
The process of planning, implementing, controlling procedures for the efficient
transportation and storage of good is known as logistics. The aim of the logistics is to satisfy the
needs of the customers. For very company the operation management is the core function. By
using the concept of operation management the people, technology, and all other good services
can be managed that are needed in production goods and services (Mitra, 2016. ).
Introduction of the company and the two selected topics
The Cambridge University Hospital NHS foundation trust is one of UK's NHS
foundation trust. In the Cambridge area and in the south-east England this trust provides healthy
care for people. The specialist care is being offered by this hospital. For the efficient
functionality and provision of health serveries operation management is essential. A considerable
amount of reform is being there in health care sector and also the jobs of these who manage the
heath care operations is also changing as well. All the needs of the patients is being looked after
in this hospital (Mosadeghrad, 2014.).
The two selected topics is the managing quality and the second one is JIT, lean and
agility. The effectiveness of the treatment can be improved through the quality management and
also the with the service that is being given to the patients the satisfaction will be increased.
Quality management in the health care is gaining increased attention with an ageing population
and increase in health care costs. On the needs of the patients the effective quality management
will focus as the effectiveness of the treatments and appropriateness of the service will be judged

maintaining the quality patients care. Due to spoilage of perishable goods this has also helped he
hospital to reduce the waste. The maximum value for the patients can be created by using lean as
it reduces the wastes. The consideration of the needs of the customers, employee engagement
and continuous important is emphasized by the lean. By using the agility in the health care the
quality care to the patient will be given (Secanell and Garel, 2014.).
Managing quality
The Cambridge University Hospital NHS foundation trust can implement total quality
management or TQM for the continuous growth and improvement in the service that is being
given to the patient at this hospital. For the development of the healthcare service continuous
quality improvement can be very essential (Kerzner and Kerzner, 2017.). On the three principles
that is continuous quality improvement, customer focus and the team work TQM mainly focuses.
The customer satisfaction is one of the long-term benefit of TQM The aim of TQM in hospital
will be to improve the quality and the best measures that will match the expectation of customers
will be identified by this tool. The problems are being identified by TQM interventions. For an
example in this hospital TQM will help to reduce the waiting time by changing a method of
appointment. Through this satisfaction among customers will be more has they don't have to wait
for longer time for their appointment. By making use of TQM both the external factors and
internal factors of this hospital can be analysed to enhance the quality of the service. Many
challenges are being faced by the hospital due to increase in cost and rapidly growing
technology. There is a pressure on organization to make use of a tool that will to provide a high-
quality services to the customer. In order to deal with the challenged that is being faced by the
hospital TQM tools can be used. To the safety of health are security, attitude of staff, role of
doctors the TQM is related to it.
In order to reduce the cost, improve efficiency and give a high quality standard care to
the patient this hospital have adopted this tool. The prospects of the market share the profitable is
being offered by TQM. In the quality of health care system TQM can be an essential part of the
hospitals competitive strategy. The process approach, continual improvement, leadership, focus
on the customers etc are some principles of TQM. Through the customer focused this hospital
will try to understand the current and future needs of the customers and also try to meet up these
needs. The efforts will also be made by the hospital in order to exceed the expectation of the

customer (Jacobs, Chase and Lummus, 2014.). The leadership in this hospital will help to create
and develop internal environment. The unity will be there in hospital and all the staff and
employees will work together in the achievement of the objective of the organization. The
involvement of the people that are working in the hospital will be there as each and every team
member will make sure the good quality and the improvement will also be recommended by
them. There will also be a continual improvement in hospital. The better care and better services
will be given to the patient in Cambridge University Hospital NHS foundation trust due to
implementation of TQM. And also this will develop more satisfaction among the patient
regarding the services that is being given to them at the hospital.

as a method of leadership and management that the errors in the system and variation rather than
blaming the people. With the external and internal suppliers the long term relationship will be
developed. In order to analyse the process and measure the system improvement it makes use of

basis of team-work this tool will help the hospital to set up effective collaborative meetings. In
the leading ongoing improvement process it will help to training supervisors and managers.

the health care then the supply chain management of healthcare operations can be affected
positively. In the supply chain the JIT enables great enhancement by providing the accurate

respond more quickly to the changing needs of the customers (Cascio, 2018).

become more effective and efficient. By using the lean principle the hospital will be able to
improve quality, better services will be given to the patients and with this there will be less harm
due to preventable errors. By making use of lean the work life of the hospital will improve as the
in the hospital the waste will be reduce, stress levels will be less and also the hospital personnel
will be able to spend more tome on and focus more on patient care. In along term perspective the
hospital will be benefited as will reduce the capital costs and ongoing expenditures. From the
better quality and services it will also improve the reputation of the hospital in the market. In
order to crate a good patient management the lean and agile can be combined in the hospital.
With this the better care and service will be given to the patient in this hospital.

This model is being adopted by this hospital in order to evaluate the performance in a
broader prospective to develop greater value for the business. On the assumption this model
works and it is being assumed the corporation is the member of the moral community and this

and it will carefully manage the consumption of energy and non -renewable resources. Also in
this hospital the water will be disposed properly. The harmful or destructive products will also
not be produced by the company (Carayon and Gurses, 2014).

operation management in the company the process of production can be designed and controlled.

It is being recommended that the hospital Cambridge University Hospital NHS
foundation trust need to make use of tools such as quality control, TQM, JIT etc in order to
enhance the quality of the services that is given to the patients. With the implementation of these
tools the involvement of the employees will be more in the work and also the faster services will
also be given to the customers as the waiting time will reduce. So, in a way positive impact will
be their in the hospital due to all these tools.
