Introduction
This report is based on selection and recruitment process of Gourmet Burger Kitchen which is
a UK-based restaurant chain. Along with that, documentation will be produced by the general
manager of the company. In addition, the general manager also will take part in the selection
process. On the other hand, the general manager of Gourmet Burger Kitchen will measure the
selection and recruitment process by own skills and abilities. Aside from that, various types of
leadership styles theories will be explained in this report. Along with this part, the difference
between leadership and management will also be explained through proper arguments and
justification. Moreover, the motivational theories will also be evaluated in order to examine the
talent of the general manager of Gourmet Burger Kitchen. Apart from that, the effectiveness of
the teamwork will also be discussed in this report in the light of the fact that conflict should be
reduced by an efficient leader. Additionally, the benefits of the teamwork are also evaluated in
this report. Besides that, assessment process to develop the execution or performance of the
employees will also be included in this report (Backhaus, Mell and Sabel, 2007).

Task 1
1.1 prepare documentation to select and recruit a new member of staff
In order to achieve desired goals and objectives, Gourmet Burger Kitchen needs more efficient
workers, and the management appointed a general manager. In addition, the Board members are
planning to recruit and appoint employees to improve the effectiveness and productivity of the
organization. According to case scenario, Gourmet Burger Kitchen is dealing with twenty full-
time employees and achieving business objectives Gourmet Burger Kitchen needs to hire more
ten employees through the recruitment process (Dubois, 2004).
Apart from that, some essential documentation is required in order to select and recruit a new
member of the staff. In addition, the HR manager can effectively manage the recruitment and
selection process of an organization but in this case, the general manager has the responsibility to
appoint ten efficient employees in Gourmet Burger Kitchen. In addition, in the documentation
process, the general manager needs to mark the vacant place in Gourmet Burger Kitchen. In
other words, the general manger needs to check the background of the new member along with
personal skills and experience in the hospitality industry. Moreover, the documentation process
includes interview segment to select and recruit a new member of the staff (Fornell, 2008).
1.2 assess the impact of legal, regulatory and ethical considerations to the recruitment and
selection process
General employment law: According to the EU employment law, the HR managers should not
recruit employees on the basis of gender, religion or culture. In addition, job discrimination act
also enclose same thing which needs to be followed by Gourmet Burger Kitchen.

Port unit law: The port unit law also covers all ethical rights of an employee. In addition,
Gourmet Burger Kitchen should follow port unit law.
The recruitment and selection process includes some legal, regulatory and ethical consideration
which needed to be followed by the general manager of Gourmet Burger Kitchen. On the other
hand, a newly appointed general manager will take charge of the selection and recruitment
process to appoint ten efficient employees. Besides that, the selection and recruitment process
are critically affected by the legal issues which force the general manager during the interview
process (FU, 2016). According to some governmental policies which represent the legal factors,
a candidate needs to submit proper identity proof before the interview process. With the help of
this legal process, the general manager of Gourmet Burger Kitchen cannot select any trespasser
in Gourmet Burger Kitchen. On the other side, one of the mandatory regulation is also affecting
the recruitment and selection process of Gourmet Burger Kitchen. In addition, the management
of Gourmet Burger Kitchen should not allow any recommendation from any consultancy firm. In
other words, candidates can directly apply to Gourmet Burger Kitchen for getting the job.
Moreover, the ethical consideration is playing an essential role in the recruitment and selection
process which also affected by cultural diversity and job discrimination. Along with that,
according to job discrimination, the general manager will provide the equal chance to each
candidate instead of their cultural background, religion, and language. Moreover, on the basis of
ability and talent, the general manager of Gourmet Burger Kitchen will recruit ten employees for
Gourmet Burger Kitchen (Gopal, 2009).

description. In other words, the job title, job place, salary and role to play are included in the job
description document. Moreover, the employees are getting proper knowledge about job with the
help of job description.
Person specification: person specification is another significant document of recruitment and
selection process. In addition, this document includes eligible criteria for applying the job.
Moreover, with the help of this document, a person can identify suitable criteria for job
application.
The selection process is mainly controlled and operated by the human resource department of an
organization, but in this case, the board members gave the responsibility to the general manager
for analyzing the outcome of the selection and recruitment process. Along with that, the general
manager has good communication skills by which he can take part in the interview process. In
other words, the manager can ask questions about the knowledge of hospitality industry. As a
result, the communication power and confidence level of a candidate can be analyzed. In
addition, with the help of good verbal communication, the general manager might ask some
customer service related question which helps to analyze the ability of the candidates (Gopal,
2009).
1.4 evaluate the own contribution to the selection process
The general manager has the ability to take part in the selection process through excellent
perception and managerial skills. Along with that, the general manager needs to take the
initiative in the selection process by asking quality questions to the candidates. Along with that,
the general manager should ask service related questions which would determine the internal

by helping the directors of Gourmet Burger Kitchen (Granet, 2013).
Decision making process: the decision making process is affected by HR mangers planning and
recruitment process. In other words, general manager helps the HR manager by suggesting
suitable names of candidates for conducting effective decisions.

2.1 explain the skills and attributes needed for leadership
In order to run the organization towards success, the leadership is playing an essential role.
Along with that, the leaders needs to some skills and traits to control and operate activities in an
organization. There are various types of leadership theories explained to describe internal traits
and skills of a successful leader such as followed:
Autocratic leadership: the leaders control all decisions and put a little input from the group
members.
Democratic leadership: the leaders also known as participative leaders who follow the
democratic leadership. Leaders also allow member’s opinion in decision making process.
Transformational leadership: in this style, the leaders work with followers to locate required
changes and guide through inspiration.
Transactional leadership: the leaders mainly focus the employee performance and promote
compliance by subordinates by both punishments and rewards.

Path goal theory: this theory is based on leader’s suitable style and behavior for the employees to
provide a proper working environment. Moreover, path goal theory mainly increases employee
motivation, employee satisfaction and empowerment.
In order to increase the skills of the newly appointed general manager, these leadership styles
and path-goal theory are playing a significant part. In addition, the transformational leadership is
one of the effective techniques to adopt change and go with the management’s flow (Kaul,
2008). The general manager can get effective lessons from the transformational leadership such
as motivation, strategic approach and emotional intelligence. With the help of these skills and
attributes, the general manager can improve interpersonal skills and ability which make him
successful manager and leader of Gourmet Burger Kitchen. On the other hand, path-goal theory
includes some management skills which also measure the personality of the general manager of
Gourmet Burger Kitchen. In addition, the manager should follow the path-goal theory in order to
improve his personality and skills for successfully handing various operational activities.

The management and leadership have individual significance. On the other hand, the leadership
qualities include some significant traits and skills of a leader by which an organization can
successfully go forward. Besides that, the managerial skills include some sensible traits of a
manager to operate and control different operational activities inside an organization (Lamb et
al., 2011). An effective leader know how to deal with various stakeholders of the organization,
on the other side, a manager know how to operate various operational activities inside an
organization. Along with that, an effective leader needs to deal with both management and
customers, but the manager is only focusing on the managerial process. Thus, Gourmet Burger
Kitchen includes highly qualified leaders who have decision-making power. Besides that, the
board members are planning to recruit ten more employees in Gourmet Burger Kitchen and
appointed a general manager. In addition, the manager of Gourmet Burger Kitchen is just
following the instruction of the leaders of Gourmet Burger Kitchen. Moreover, the leaders
always have decision making authority in their hand, but a manager does not have any decision-
making power rather he just follows leader’s instruction (Lawfer, 2004).
2.3 compare leadership styles for different situations
Situation 1
The leaders need to apply the different managerial approach to deal with some unwanted
situation in an organization. On the other hand, Gourmet Burger Kitchen is a well-established
restaurant in the UK. Besides that, one day a waiter of Gourmet Burger Kitchen, unfortunately,
damage garments of reputed customers. In that particular saturation, the general manager applied
a useful strategy of transactional leadership which based on customer satisfaction. In other sense,
instead of the waiter, the manager himself expressed apology in front of the customers and order

the waiter to serve carefully. Moreover, the manager successfully managed the situation with the
help of transactional leadership style (Lawson, 2014).
Situation 2
Apart from that, another situation is that, the suppliers of Gourmet Burger Kitchen were
demanding additional charges for raw material supply. In addition, the suppliers stopped supply
chain management by not getting desired payment. In that kind of situation, the manager of
Gourmet Burger Kitchen took the initiative and bargain with the suppliers. According to
democratic leadership style, the manager made a negotiation with the suppliers and increased the
rate of raw material a little (Orsino, 2008).
Moreover, two different types of situations are described in this segment where the manager of
Gourmet Burger Kitchen applied transactional and democratic leadership style and controlled the
situation.
2.4 explain ways to motivate staff to achieve objectives
The motivational theory helps the leaders to motivate the employees to achieve desired goals and
objectives, besides that two significant motivational theories are discussed below:
Mayo’s motivational theory: in order to achieve organizational goals and objectives, Mayo’s
motivational theory is playing an essential role. Besides that, Mayo’s theory is based on human
relation management methods. In other words, Mayo’s theory defined that, the employees of an
organization are motivated by relational factors like companionship and attention rather than
reward or business environment factors. According to this theory, the leaders of Gourmet Burger
Kitchen needs to recognize the relationship with their employees and motivate them for working

harder. Besides that, the leaders of Gourmet Burger Kitchen should motivate their employees to
meet the objectives of the organization (Schindler, 2012). Moreover, the leaders of Gourmet

Maslow’s motivation theory: according to Maslow’s motivation theory, the management of
Gourmet Burger Kitchen needs to provide the proper working environment for employee
satisfaction. Besides that, the reward system is one of the effective business technique which is
used by numerous organization to boost up the performance of the employees. In addition, the
financial needs of the employees should be filled up by Gourmet Burger Kitchen. Along with
that, the management of Gourmet Burger Kitchen should implement the reward strategy to
motivate their employees. In addition, Maslow’s Hierarchy Need theory also includes some
factors like physiological needs, safety needs, social belonging, esteem, self-actualization and
self-transcendence. Moreover, with the help of Maslow’s motivational theory, Gourmet Burger
Kitchen can focus each need of their employees.
Task 3
3.1 assess the benefits of team working for an organization
The team working includes lots of benefits which help an organization to meet desired goals and
objectives. The work pressure is reduced by an efficient team working, and the team leader can
recognize the working capability of each member of the team (Steinberg, 2006). On the other
hand, each team member might not have equal skills and ability, but each member of a team
must include some creative skill. Apart from that, an organization gets a huge benefit from a
teamwork in short deadline of assigned tasks. In addition, the productivity of a team is not
affected by the absence of one member, be that as it may, other people of the team could divide

the work load among them. Moreover, proper co-ordination is required between the team
members in order to improve the performance of team working.
On the other hand, the manager of Gourmet Burger Kitchen has a responsibility to access the
benefit of teamwork. Only a manager can build the good relation between employees and
encouraged them to work as the team. In the case of Gourmet Burger Kitchen, the manager can
allocate the specific table for serving food items to the customers by ten teams and each team
contains three team members (Wood, 2015). According to the case scenario, Gourmet Burger
Kitchen had twenty employees and recruited ten more employees. As a result, total number of
employees is thirty and Gourmet Burger Kitchen has ten service table which managed by the
team working. Moreover, the manager can assess high performance from a team working by
implementing reward strategy.
Problem Solving: with the help of individual team, the service related problems can be solved.
For example, the general manager can exchange the working hours between two employees.
Productivity: the teamwork always provide a healthy productivity which increase the revenue of
an organization.
3.2 demonstrate working in a team as a leader and member towards specific goals, dealing
with any conflict or difficult situations
There are some conflicts may occur due to an uncompromised working environment. Along with
that, the leader needs to make good coordination among the employees to reduce the impact of
the corporate hazard. Besides that, the manager of Gourmet Burger Kitchen needs to focus on the
activity of various employees in order to control hazard situation inside the organization. In
addition, in order to resolve conflicts in Gourmet Burger Kitchen, the manager is playing the

most important role. Along with that, the manager of Gourmet Burger Kitchen can reduce the
impact of conflict with the help of effective communication skills. In other words, once
customers felt uncomfortable with the service quality and as a team leader, the manager of

words, by communicating with team members and the customers, the manager of Gourmet
Burger Kitchen can increase the performance of team working and be able to satisfy more
customers by avoiding any conflict and difficult situation (Lang and Merino, 2012).
3.3 review the effectiveness of the team
In order to increase the effectiveness of the team, the management of Gourmet Burger Kitchen
should implement reward strategy which is used by many organizations. On the other hand, most
of the employees are seeking for money, and the manager can easily motivate them through this
motivational strategy. Aside from that, the reward system or bonus facility can effectively
increase the productivity of the team members. In addition, the management of Gourmet Burger
Kitchen needs to focus on the behavioral approach which effect the organizational performance.
Along with that, the training session is one of the significant factor which can increase the
effectiveness of the team. Moreover, the management of Gourmet Burger Kitchen can implement
reward system and training program to increase the effectiveness of the team. Moreover, in this
corporate sector of the hospitality industry, customer satisfaction is important for organizational
growth and business expansion. Thus, the level of customer satisfaction is only can be increased
by effective training session which needed to be provided by Gourmet Burger Kitchen.

In order to monitor the work performance, the management of Gourmet Burger Kitchen needs to
focus on some critical elements such as activity of the employees, customer service process and
employee management. Along with that, the manager of Gourmet Burger Kitchen needs to pay
more attention to the execution of the employees. As early mentioned, the manager had divided
the employees into different teams which make monitoring process easy. Besides that, the
manager of Gourmet Burger Kitchen should maintain a scoreboard which includes activities and
work performance of individual employees (Burns, 2012). In addition, the manager needs to
report board members about the work performance of the employees. Besides that, the manager
of Gourmet Burger Kitchen must be conservative and observe the customer service process
which includes high-class employee performance. In other words, the customers are only can be
satisfied by high-quality service and food items. With the help of feedback from the customers,
the management of Gourmet Burger Kitchen can effectively monitor the work performance.
Along with that, the management of Gourmet Burger Kitchen requires proper business planning
for the assessment of work performance. Besides that, incentive strategy can enhance the
performance of the employees. Besides that, the management of Gourmet Burger Kitchen needs
to adopt the latest technology to monitor and assess the work performance. In other words, the

demand of their customers through communicating with them.
Personality: with the help of effective training program and Personal Development plan, the
employees of Gourmet Burger Kitchen can extend their personality. In other words, the thinking
ability and judgment power of the employees are increased by the training programs.
Knowledge: Personal Development Plan increases the level of intelligence of the employees. In
other words, with the help of training programs, Gourmet Burger Kitchen can increase their
employee’s knowledge and intelligence (FU, 2016).
Ability: with the help of Personal Development Plan, the physical and mental strength of the
employees are increased. In simple words, the performance and ability of the employees are

Planning to review performance: in order to review the performance, the management of
Gourmet Burger Kitchen needs to implement CCTV installation. As a result, the managers of
Gourmet Burger Kitchen can successfully track various activities of their employees. Moreover,
with the help of CCTV, the management can monitor and review the performance. Besides that,
the management of Gourmet Burger Kitchen needs to adopt the latest technology to review and

management of Gourmet Burger Kitchen needs to appoint an efficient and qualified trainer who
will locate needs and provide training to the employees.
4.3 evaluate the success of the assessment process
The assessment process or training program got success because the employees realized that the
performance of teamwork had been improved. In addition, the manager of Gourmet Burger
Kitchen also increased employee’s execution with the help of training programs. Besides that,
the development needs of the employees are fulfilled by the training programs arranged by
Gourmet Burger Kitchen. Moreover, the employees are being more efficient and skilled due to
the Personal Development Plan (Kaul, 2008). According to the assessment process, the general
manager did an excellent job which is CCTV installation which includes both positive and
negative aspects.
Positive impact: the activity of good people is captured through CCTV. The reward strategy is
mainly influenced by the success of the assessment process.
Negative impact: some negative aspects also captured by CCTV such as theft of assets, poor
customer handing.
