Melbourne's Status as a Sports City

World of Sport

Melbourne is a one of a most famous Australian state of Victoria as well as considered as
the second most populous city in Australia and Oceania. The country has first class infrastructure
with great people and have a strong economy. Main reason behind all these is that government
supports such country in order to become the most famous and leading sport centre in world
(Coalter, 2010). Melbourne is confirmed as the leading athletics capital from last decades as
many sports take place over there. It is awarded and crowned as number one Sports Business
Ultimate City apart from other famous and sports hub cities like Berlin, New York, London and
Sydney.
It is a fourth time when Melbourne won this title along with the years of 2006, 2008,
2010 with best venue category in the world. There are various kinds of sports that take place over
in Melbourne from the past 10 years like Australian Open Grand Slam, Australian Formula One
Grand Prix, The MotoGP and several other long lasting events with 2006 Commonwealth, 2015
ICC Cricket World Cup, etc. Thus, these major sports are considered as the major reason behind
as an official sporting leaders in world rather than others - “Melbourne – a capital of sport city”
(Invest Victoria, 2016).
For keeping the Melbourne as a sport city or centre, Victorian Government is doing
everything so that in future they become able to host many sports city consents in an appropriate
and effective manner. The 2017/2018 budget for Melbourne consider so many things which
stated as follow (Victorian Budget 2017/18, 2018):
Melbourne Park: It is the third stage for Melbourne developing park with an investment $271.6
million which consider as best finance for Australian open until 2036 and will mean bigger and
better events for entertainment.
Sports infrastructure fund: For this consent, appropriate fund get provided of $20.1 million for
developing new grants and facilities for improving the community participation.
These are the investments for Melbourne whom are developing as a major sport city in
the world (Kyle, 2014). As from the past few years, it seems that many sports event lead to
organise there with a clear motive to earn and generate more revenue through which economy
gets improved.
Although, these are several future investment which lead to done by Victorian
Government with a motive to remain make Melbourne as a sport city. Thus, it get evaluated that

these future investment are appropriate in nature and such strategy lead to maintain their name
over in such context.
For making a healthy and fit community, Victorian Government mad their investment
more in more many consents. Since November 2014, government has committed to spend more
than $1 billion for creating a best and active recreation system which support in making lifestyle
of many people community healthy and suitable. Thus, this overall investment is made up of
over some particular things stated as follow (Active Victoria, 2017):
$130 million for sport events so that many Victorian become able to play sports and become
active in nature as well and reinforce the sustainability of such recreation sector. Thus for
creating Melbourne Victorian as a sport city this major investment provide strengthened so that
better and health recreation system get develop in order to make things appropriate and support
community lifestyle.
Investment is continuous for today as well in which infrastructure is getting improved as
by days per days in order to support Melbourne as a award winning city and for this a major
strategy get frame in which suitable public transport has been provided so that public become
able to attend these events properly (Maguire, 2011). Melbourne park is currently in the midst of
redevelopment with $338 million includes pedestrian bridge to link home of Australian Open
with City Centre. Along with this bold new $1 billion plans have been drafted for transforming
the Melbourne Cricket Ground with more parkland as well as support in order to organise more
live events (Why Melbourne is the sporting capital of the world, 2018).
Melbourne is rightly claimed to be a world sports city centre because in near future, there
are many more events lead to take place. Although, it is a only way through which Victorian get
manage their operations and name of a world leading sports city in order to which better results
could be gain. With suitable infrastructure, country have better growth and become able to link
their fans with loved events (Salama-Younes, 2011).
These sports event made positive impact on economic condition of a country as well
which support Victorian government to invest more and more in recreating system or process.
The major sporting events contribute a combined annual economic impact is of $1.4 billion out
of which Australian open alone provide more than 680,000 plus visitors and directly contribute
around $240 million in such year as a most spending event (It's sport to scoff but Melbourne's
major events are money well spent, 2018). When Tiger Woods come to Australian Masters his

appearance generate 34 million in an economy spins off. These things gain and provide benefits
to many other sectors as well like hospitality, retail and design innovation. Each year “Grand
Slams” brings more than 300 players with 1500 journalist of around 43 countries out of which
many need accommodation in Melbourne.
All these things stated that if any country lead to take chance to host future Olympics that
is Melbourne (Sherry, 2010). As this country take many time an award to become as a sports city
in the world rather than others. Along with this, government also spend more than sufficient
balance in order to improve infrastructure so that working practices get improve as well as best
suited contribution to economy get promoted (Werthner, Culver and Mercier, 2010). These all
are consider as best reasons behind justifying that Melbourne is one of a Sports City the world as
Victorian Government spending too much money in order to facilitate appropriate and high
quality services to all public users. Hence, this also support in improving economic condition of
a country with suitable fans for all working practices and provide appropriate bridge between
accommodation and facilities of living with high quality infrastructure.
