Business Communication
Business communication is mainly the information sharing between an individual within
and outside a company that is performed for the commercial benefit of the company. It can also
be termed as relying on information within the business by its people. The main purpose of this
particular essay is identifying one of the most contemporary concepts that are learned by me and
highlighting why it is important for me. Furthermore, another major purpose of the essay is to
discuss the concepts that would be quite vital for my future career aspirations. The significance
of the business communication is it tends to build a great relationship between the employee and
the employer, which in return helps to enhance the productivity and the bottom line of the
company.
The essay will mainly consist of the three main part: Introduction, discussion (section 1
describing the importance of the 10 weekly concepts with regards to the work activities, section
2 literature review, section 3 application of 2 main concepts for career aspirations in future), and
the last section will be the conclusion.
In the beginning of the course, I have learned the purposes of communication. As we
know that communication is very significant for the personal and professional life, the
importance of communication for personal and professional life can be known after knowing the
purposes of communication. The purpose of communication is not limited to transferring
information from one person to another person, but much wider than this. The purposes of
communication are transferring information from one person to another, making people aware of
the things of concern, entertain the people, heal the people, and many more. It has a great value
for me to know the purposes of communication in my current and future line of work. As the
purposes of communication will be known to me, I will understand the significance of
communication effectively. And hence I will put extra effort to learn the skills to communicate

with the people effectively and efficiently. For example, if I do not know the purpose of
communication, I cannot even develop the healthy interpersonal relationship with my colleagues,
and hence I would not be able to succeed in my personal and professional work (Bovee &
Courtland, 2012). Further I have identified that when I am not able to say something verbally
during my work activities, then I use nonverbal gestures, eye contact and facial expressions for
getting the things done.
I also learned the difference between the reader and writer of business communication.
The main difference between the reader and writer of business communication is that the writer
of business communication has to think from a different perspective while writing and has to
consider all the aspects of the business while writing business communication. So, the writer of
the business communication has to do research and analyze all the aspects of the business
communication. On the other hands, the reader of the business communication has simply to read
and analyze the things written by the writer (Guffey & Loewy, 2010).
The reader of the business communication needs not to do research all the aspects of the
business. For example, a business writer has to think about the perspective of the customer, the
management, the shareholders, the employees, etc. and include all the aspects of the business in
his/her writing but it is not the same with the readers of business communication. It is the need of
hour for me to know the difference between the writer and reader of the business
communication. As I want to be a business communication writer, it will help me or guide me in
acquiring enough knowledge and information to be effective business communication writer.
Academic writing is not all hard, and the knowledge gained in this type of writing will
help an individual even in their workplace. For instance, in the case of my written

communication at work academic writing has helped me a lot for mastering professional writing
also (Bovée, Thill & Schatzman, 2010).
Apart from this I have also identified that literature review as it holds a lot of importance
with regards to the work activities also. A literature review has the ability to demonstrate the
knowledge of the individuals with regards to what they already know about a particular area of
knowledge. I have also identified different types of public speaking as it holds a lot of
importance with regards to the work activities also. Public speaking is not an easy job as it
requires a lot of effort. For instance, in case of my work activities, it has helped me a lot in terms
of public speaking as I was able to establish my relationship with the audience and present the
key points and then concluded it reminding the audience in terms of what they have heard(Adler
& Elmhorst, 2012).
Further, I have identified intercultural communication as it holds a lot of importance with
regards to the work activities also. Intercultural communication is mainly the situation in which
the individuals from the various cultural backgrounds are engaged in communicating with each
other. For instance, at my workplace, I have people who work here are from different cultures.
Hence, after learning intercultural communication, I have applied it at my workplace also it has
helped me to accept and recognize the cultural differences and work in a proper manner (Hooker,
2012).
Along with these, I have also identified external communication as it holds a lot of
importance with regards to the work activities also. The external communication refers to the
communication that is completely designed for the audience that is external to the company. For

instance, the external communication in terms of my work activities has helped me to create a
good public image.
Last but not least, I have also learned the difference between interpersonal
communication and intrapersonal communication. Both the concepts interpersonal and
intrapersonal communication was very confusing as I was not able to understand the main
difference between these two concepts. I learned the basic difference between both the concepts
and that is intrapersonal communication is something which takes place inside the individual
while interpersonal communication takes place between the individuals.
Intrapersonal communication is used to analyze a situation or clarify the concepts
(Phutela, 2015). On the other hands, interpersonal communication takes please for various
reasons. So, understanding the main difference between the intrapersonal and interpersonal
communication will help me to use both the concepts effectively. I can use interpersonal
communication and intrapersonal communication to work effectively in personal and
professional life effectively. For example, interpersonal communication will help me in
improving the interpersonal relationship in current and future line of work while intrapersonal
communication will help me in developing critical thinking which is essential for current and
future line of work.
Literature review: It has been stated by a lot of scholars that interpersonal communication
is one of the main elements that help the individual to exchange their feelings, information, as
well as meaning via non-verbal and verbal messages (Decarie, 2010). On the contrary, there are
also a lot of interpersonal communication scholars have sought for understanding and defining
the interpersonal conflict. As an outcome, there are a lot of definitions of conflict available.

Throwing light on the above-mentioned discussion, it can be said that interpersonal
communication more often takes place in small groups such as family. The interpersonal
communication can take place face-to-face settings, as well as via media platforms, for instance,
social media. There are several channels of communication that tend to contribute to the
effectiveness of interpersonal communication (Thill & Bovée, 2013).
As per Locker & Kienzler 2013, it has also been argued that interpersonal communication
is also regarded as the communication that takes place between two individuals who are
interdependent and some kind of knowledge of each other. Knapp and Daly (2011) in their work
contends that the physiological and biological perspective on interpersonal communication is a
field that is growing day by day. Some of the scholars such as Braithwaite and Schrodt (2014)
highlighted within the study of interpersonal communication, some of the concepts explored
include the following: personality, knowledge structures and social interaction, language,
nonverbal signals, emotion experience and expression, supportive communication, social
networks and the life of relationships, influence, conflict, computer-mediated communication,
interpersonal skills, interpersonal communication in the workplace as well as the communication
across all the life span. However, Floyd and Afifi (2012) argues that with interpersonal
communication, the receivers of the message begins perceiving with interpersonal motive always
in their mind. Braithwaite and Schrodt (2014) in support of the above view contends that This
interpersonal perception of receiver creates reaction or sentiment in the mind of the receiver and
thus, might cause confusion and conflicts.

Application of the concepts: I have been a mechanical engineer with 2 years of
experience in the automobile sector. Furthermore, also as an engineering graduate having
specialization in management, in future, I am aiming for a career that will consist of managerial
function along with the decision-making authority.
As I have already mentioned earlier that I have been a mechanical engineer I aspire to be
on a senior mechanical engineer and the most prominent trait that is required for this position is
communication along with the technical expertise (Guffey and Loewy, 2010). Furthermore, I
also believe that I can use from the business communication while working as a senior
mechanical engineer is effective interpersonal skills and written communication in an effective
manner. I will be communicating with my subordinates and also with the customers with the help
of the interpersonal communication and written communication such as email.
There are two of the main concepts that are quite relevant for my career aspirations such
as interpersonal communication and nonverbal communication. Firstly, it is an absolute necessity
that a mechanical engineer or an individual from engineering management background to
possess strong interpersonal communication skills. As a mechanical engineer, I should have
strong soft skills, such as strong communication and analytical thinking skills. In addition to this,
such a communication skill will help me to influence the behavior, attitudes, and opinions of
others. Moreover, it will also allow for more effective, efficient cooperation, as well as can help
maintain a social bond. it will help in learning, and relating to the problems or situations that
others face. This will assist me in gaining strengths in solving problems that unavoidably occurs
both in personal and professional life. In addition, if I have good interpersonal and non-verbal
communication skills, I will be able to communicate and establish clear goals and objectives in

an organization. It will also boost my personality as an engineer and enhance future scope to gain
authority in my position.
Overall the entire 10 concepts as a part of the business communication is equally useful
for me towards future aspirations because without proper communication an individual cannot
succeed in any field (Hotel, 2015).
The business communication skills will help me as a mechanical engineer even after 5
years to develop a product for a client. As a mechanical engineer often, I will have to explain the
complicated machines or devices to the individuals who are not at all familiar with mechanical
engineering. The business communication skills will help me so that I will be able to explain the
ideas effectively and clearly and also help in improving the circumstances that obstructs in
reaching business objectives (Majid and et al., 2012). As in my career goals, both interpersonal
and non-verbal communication would help me to attain success and help the organization where
I would be working to run smoothly, as well as improve the bottom line.
Conclusion
It has been highlighted in the entire essay that business communication plays a significant
role in the professional world. Business communication tends to build a great relationship
between the employee and the employer, which in return helps to enhance the productivity and
the bottom line of the company.
Understanding the business communication in a better way will also help the workers or
an individual within the business to pass on a message to and from other individuals in a distinct
manner. Throwing light on the above-mentioned statement, it can also be said that business
communication plays a key role in maintaining and creating great industrial relations. Without

proper business communication, corporate relations cannot be maintained properly. Hence, from
the study, it is clear that business communication plays an important role in the industrial
relations as well as it is also one of the most useful tools for the people who are mechanical
engineers like me by profession.
