PROJECT INITIATION PLANNING AND EXECUTION
1. An overview of the Scenario
The family of Kelly and Jeff with their two children and Will and Lexie and their dog
will move to their new house in Perth. Currently they are living in a two-bedroom rental
apartment in Maroochydore in Sunshine Coast. The shifting is required as Jeff recently secured a
new position as a marketing director interstate. Jeff has to report to his new job on 5th February
2018. The new house in Perth is already secured, however, the can only move in to the place on
27th January 2018. Jeff and Kelly have already started preparation for the shifting and have
planned it accordingly so that they can move in to their new house. However, they need to vacate
their current property on 20th January. Therefore, Jeff and Kelly need to stay in a hotel for a few
days, as they have no relatives in Sunshine Coast. They need to rent a place for some days in
order to store their belongings and packed stuffs that they would be taking to the new place. The
moving and shifting is entirely the responsibility of Jeff and Kelly and the budget set for the task
in $5000. The Perth school term commences on 31st January 2018, therefore it is essential to
complete the entire shifting within 30th January. In order to manage all the shifting related works
and transfer of the whole family along with their two cars in the new place, a transport company
(packers and movers) is hired by Jeff and Kelly to supervise and provide necessary help in the
moving process. It is the responsibility of the transportation company to move the two cars in the
new place. The detailed work breakdown structure, project milestone and flow of tasks in this
entire process are elaborated in the following sections (Burke 2013).
2. The Criteria and Assumptions
In order to complete the entire shifting process with the scheduled time and available
budget, it is essential to prepare a proper schedule of the tasks that are needed to be completed

for the successful completion of the shifting process. The entire process can be considered as a
project and proper scheduling is essential for ensuring project success. It is to be kept in mind
that no essential belongings are left out in the process of moving and therefore, it is essential to
list down all the materials and belongings that are needed to be taken with, in the new place.
There is no separate arrangement required for moving the family and the cars, as it is the
responsibility of the transportation company. The transportation company hired will make
necessary arrangements for movement of the packed stuffs to the place rented for storing the
stuffs and to the new place as well. However, Jeff and Kelly have decided to supervise the
packing process, as there are many essential belongings that cannot be left out in the current
place. It is therefore assumed that Jeff and Kelly will take active part in the packing procedure
along with the workers of the Transportation Company. It is assumed that the transportation
company will be paid in installments for the material costs needed for successful completion of
the project (Rezaeean and Falaki 2012). However, the workers of the Transportation Company
will be paid on hourly basis. The entire completion of the payment to the Company will be made
only after successful transfer to Perth. One of the project constraints is that the payment to the
Transportation Company does not include the cost of hotel and the storage space rented. The cost
estimation of the entire project further include the admission fees of the children to the new
school in Perth, transfer of utilities and change in address. . It is assumed that the budget
estimated for the project is sufficient to successfully complete the tasks (Fernandes, Ward and
Araújo 2013).

PROJECT INITIATION PLANNING AND EXECUTION
A milestone of the entire project is prepared that reflects to the assumption and
constraints of the project (Devi and Reddy 2012). It mentions the detailed work breakdown
structure (Refer to appendix 1).
4. The lists of tasks
The task list that is to be followed for the successful completion of the project is prepared
that reflects the scenario and major requirements for the successful completion of the project
(Kerzner 2013). A task list is prepared and the resources responsible for each task is mentioned
as well (refer to appendix 2).
5. Gantt Chart
A Gantt chart of the project schedule is prepared that indicates the critical path of the
project (Refer to appendix 3). This schedule is to be followed for successful completion of the
project (Larson and Gray 2013).
6. Adjustments made
The schedule of the project indicates the initiation of the project is from December 22nd
2017. It is assumed that the packing and labeling of the items had started in December only.
Furthermore, the project follows a sequential structure and there are some critical tasks,
incompletion of which will lead to the failure of the project (Sharon and Dori 2015). The
schedule of the project is adjusted in such a way that the old house would be vacated in 20th
January as required and move in to the new house will be on 27th January. Moving in of all the
necessary goods to the new house will be completed within 30th January so that Will and Lexie
can attend school on 3st January. These adjustments are made in order to ensure that the project

is executed within the allocated budget and Jeff can join his new job on time. Additionally, it
ensures that the children do not miss their school.
7. Reflection
The project is complex as the time for relocation is very limited. I have understood that it
is very essential to schedule a task before its implementation when there are a number of
constraints associated with a task. The constraints of this task include the vacating the old house
on 20th January but move in to the new house cannot be before 27th January. Another constraint
of the task is that the entire relocation is to be completed within a budget of $5000. The hiring of
a transportation company is a wise decision to complete the project within the scheduled time.
The work breakdown structure and the schedule of the project has been planned keeping in mind
the constraints, assumptions and adjustments made.
