INTRODUCTION
Management and the leadership style in every firm is different it varies according to the
function and activities that is used by the Board of Director. In which major part of function is
handled by the senior executives for the successful accomplishment of organisational goal within
stipulated time (Tourish, 2020). This current report is based on CEO of BRITISH AMERICAM
TOBACCO which is a global brand for tobacco. They serves their services approx 200 countries
with 57000 employees across globally. This assignment analyse the level of performance for
achieving growth and development in consistent level.
MAIN BODY
Explain the Management style, principals and functions adopt by the CEO of British American
Tobacco
Management style refers to the way adopted by a manager in order to manage the work
force and improve their efficiency (Kairys, 2018) . Jack Bowles who is the CEO of BAT adopts
following style to manage the work force in an efficient manner:
Autocratic and directive management style: Managers of organization adopt this practice
as they keep proper control over the activities performed by employees and also provide them
direction to work in an efficient manner.
Transactional Management style: Jack Bowles considers human resources as an
important part of organization. Management team of company provide various benefits such as
bonus,incentives, rewards, acknowledgement to work force. So they stay motivated and work for
the success and growth of company.
Principals and functions of Management:
There are some predefined functions of management that are used by Jack Bowles in the
following manner:
Planning: Higher authorities of company ensure to make appropriate plans and policies
in order to meet with future uncertainties(Vijayabanu, Suppraja and Sathammai, 2017). They
perform anticipations for future and formulate strategies to grab the opportunities that might
occur in upcoming years. It helps company to achieve organizational goals in pre-defined period
of time.

Organizing: Management team of BAT organize all the business activities in an efficient
way. Due to this they are able to reduce down cost and maximizing profits. Functions pertain to
production, distribution carries out effectively so that they can meet with the needs and
requirements of potential buyers.
Staffing: Human resources are key element of every organization. In selected company,
managers make sure to recruit and select efficient work force. They organize proper training and
development program for staff in order to enhance their productivity and work efficiency. CEO

Directing: Management team of organization provide proper direction to work force.
They guide and motivate them through several monetary and non monetary benefits. So, they

Board charter sets the values , mode of work, rules and roles for BOD. Its stipulation is
related with the postulation of standards. It includes CEO, chairman, director like Marion
Helmes, Luc Jobin and many other directors (Healy, 2016). Along this it involves several
department also such as marketing in which they use digital marking, E- commerce, etc. for
promoting their products. Other department they hold is operation that includes manufacturing &
inventory warehouse for production and storage of products along with this it also consist
functional department which includes scientific research, culture, finance imperial tobacco,

Organisational culture at BAT:
In BAT, there is a high competitive culture environment which aids employee to perform
well and hard in order to achieve growth and success. Higher authorities are willing to give them
attractive achievements for encouragement and motivation that leads to development and
professional learning. The main aim of BOD is to maintain healthy and positive workplace
environment to engaging their team members towards their task.
In order to achieve high performance, BOD always ensures that their employee feel
secure and motivated for the development and growth of company. As well as they provides
equal opportunity & rights to each employees for maintaining positive environment at workplace
(Mira and et.al., 2020). They offerers training and development session also for enhancing the
knowledge and skill of workers for launching innovative products.

company's effectiveness.
CEO of BRITISH AMERICAN TOBACCO, Jack Bowles's mainly focussed on
development of strong leadership styles that improves productivity as well as it builds strong
management team. Major objective of Jack Bowles as a leader is to take advantage of all
opportunities by using transformational process with a multiple category of nicotines and

tobacco products at BAT. He generally use “Laissez Faire Leadership style” in order to
maintain their staff members(Fawcett, Fawcett and Swanson, 2019). This style emphasis on
delegation of responsibilities to each team members. It will leads to be successful if all team
members are willing to take their responsibilities and engage towards their allotted projects or
task.
Bowles believes in making or aligning strategies related with the new trends of people.
For this they need to change their current strategy and improve that according to demands of
consumer or for topping into new business markets. This will helps in understanding the
dynamic nature of market which enhances the sales and profit of company. There is a
predominate classification on the basis of set criteria that mainly focus on leadership
development and capabilities.
Another approach that Bowles use is “identification of critical experiences” which

employees initiatives is carried out. He is the person that accepts every challenging task in order
to enhance sales and profit of company as well as for engaging their employees towards

their performance by using some approaches and these are mentioned below:
It is important for BAT to provides training and development session for improving and
enhancing the skill and knowledge of their workers to being new innovation at
marketplace which helps them to deal with competitive environment.
Through encouragement and motivation, CEO of BAT can enhance organisational
performance, if workers feel motivated and encourage they will work hard and fell more

can enhance its organisational performance. Such as transformational style which enables
leader to mould their leadership style according to the need of company. It is an excellent
practice which gives flexibility to both employees and leaders and provides opportunity
to take part in decision making process. By adopting this style company ensures that each
employees are able to meet with their individual goal along with organisation objective.
By devising good market strategies they can attract ample numbers of consumers which
increase sale and profit of company that gives strength to employees for performing
better and that leads to high organisational performance.
With the help of above mentioned recommendation, British American Tobacco can
successfully meet their predetermined set goal or objective within stipulated time.
