Simulation 2 Part A – Scenario
Initial Case Notes - Alice
Alice is a 3-year-old girl who lives with her mother Brenda, father Raj and two brothers, 9
and 7 years of age.
Alice was born with deformities to both hands resulting in missing and deformed digits. She
has impairments in both vision and hearing but can communicate with time and
consideration given to language, volume and removal of other distractions in her
environment. Her parents would like her to attend a childcare facility in their local
community as a means of providing her with social interaction with others of her own age
and also to provide her mother with some respite care so that she can re-join the workforce
and resume her career to help out with family finances.
Her parents are seeking assistance with placement with the view to integration into a
kindergarten program when appropriate, and in the future mainstream public school.
Alice wears prescription glasses and has been fitted with hearing aids but she is troubled by
them and tells her mother that they make her ears sore. She currently wears nappies 24/7
as her mother has been unable to toilet train her.
Regardless of the need for glasses, Alice’s favourite thing is to look at picture books, and
she tends to spend most of her time either looking at them or asking for one. She seems to
be very good at making up story’s by looking at the pictures.
After reading the Case Notes, and taking into consideration the age of Alice, please respond
to the following.
1. At interview, you find that Alice is not responding in any way to your questions and
appears to be dis-interested in your presence. What part of the home would be the most
suitable environment to observe and engage her in the interview? (In your response please
provide a reason for your choice)
