Running head: EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE
I believe that the importance of emotional intelligence, in today’s 21st century is a
very crucial aspect where the awareness of our own emotions is very essential in many
situations and life. The stressful conditions in the workplace domain has elevated and
therefore, understanding and acknowledging ours as well as the emotions of people around us
can have a compassionate as well as empathetic relationships with others (Raman,
Sambasivan & Kumar, 2016) . Emotional intelligence is indeed an expanding field of
research domain and it is very important aspect of any work place (Goleman & Boyatzis,
2013).
The self-assessment test that I had given had given, the lowest I has scored for self-
awareness, which is 4, and according to my understanding of emotional Intelligence, self-
awareness is a crucial factor as well as a primary factor. I realized that everything begins with
my “self”, if I am not aware about my emotions then how can I assess others feelings and
emotions. Daniel Goleman in his video has also pointed out that self-awareness is the first
step towards emotional intelligence. Moreover, in the assessment when I was asked that
whether I want to maintain a status quo or take new challenges, I chose for the status quo, by
reflecting this I realized that may be I want to be on the safer side of the picture. But then,
now when I reflect upon this I realize the safer side might not help me explore new ideas and
activities in my life. There will be challenges and I need to take up them, then it will be really
“status quo”.
According to Karimi, Leggat, Donohue, Farrell, and Couper, (2014), Emotional
Labour could lead to leaving the job, and hence, Emotional Intelligence, and I agree to the
point that its application in the work place domain is imperative not only for ourselves but
also for others. In the assessment there was a question related to the fact whether I let my
emotions have impact on my behaviours or not. I generally let my emotions impact on my
behaviour, to this point, I believe that keeping my emotions like anger or any emotion related

to depression inside my self could or suppressing those emotions could lead to a greater
impact later on or outburst of emotions. According to Schutte and Loi, (2014), the application
of emotional intelligence in a workplace environment could significantly improve the social
support system as well as mental health in a work place environment as well as more job
satisfaction. The emotional intelligence can also induce high turnover in employees as well
(Trivellas, Gerogiannis & Svarna, 2013).
In the assessment I scored 4, in social awareness, an important component of
emotional intelligence is empathy towards others that could make me understand and
conceptualize others emotions. With respect to that I believe that I need to develop my
intercultural interactions. Emotional Intelligence can vary from culture to culture, and in
Australia there can be found huge diversity in the population. By the assessment it is clear
that I need to communicate with others in a way that could be understood, though seeking
mutual understanding has to be there but understanding their needs is more important.
Sometimes, improper expression of emotions could lead to faulty consequences, and hence
along with emotional intelligence, applicability of cultural intelligence has to be in alignment.
I believe that cultural intelligence can be used as a strategy to effectively interact with others
in a diverse professional context. According to Ng, (2013), Cultural Intelligence, the
potentiality to work efficiently in an intercultural atmosphere could elucidate the cultural
difference and can also close the gap.
Therefore, from my above experience in self-assessment, I could conclude that I should
enable myself with more opportunities and also establish and cross cultural empathetic bonds
with others.
