The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People is a
book written by Stephen Covey. It is a
business and self-help book published in the
year 1989. In this book there is mentioning
of 7 habits which are devoted to
Independence, Interdependence, and
continual improvement. The seven habits
suggests to be proactive, begin with the end
in mind, put first things first, Think win-win,
Seek first to understand, then to be
understood, Synergize and last is Sharpen
the Saw; Growth (Covey, 2013).
All these habits can help an individual to
make sure that they have a plan for their
own development. Following these habits
will help an individual to make sure that
they inbuilt certain kinds of habits in them
which can help them in succeeding. It will
also help the individuals to make sure that
they have a plan for developing skills. In the
time when the skill development is very
much essential for grabbing opportunities, it
will help the firm in managing the skills as
well as it will also assist people in making
sure that they have all the skills that are
required for staying ahead of the competitors
(Byyny, 2016). These habits gives a self-
progressive approach which helps an
individual to learn new things at much faster
rate and smoothly as well as effectively. It is
also critical for the management to have an
understanding about the “The 7 Habits of
Highly Effective People” (Maxwell, 2010).
There are different skills that can be learnt
by the people following this book but the
skills that need to be given at most priority
and which can be learnt from this book are
able communicators, leader and the
employee.
Communicator
Communication plays a critical role in the
success of the individual. It helps them in
making sure that they have a plan for this. A
communicator always helps an individual to
have an understanding about the needs of
the people. It also allows them to
communicate with the employees and also
allows individuals to make sure that they are
able to communicate about the challenges
(Covey, 2011). It is one of major qualities of
effective leader and allows companies to

make sure that they have a control over the
operations. Professional communication can
help the individuals to control the problems
that are faced by the individuals. There are
many talents in the industry and it is critical
for the individuals to improve their skills on
the regular basis. Being proactive allows an
individual to learn things from sources as an
individual will take responsibility of
learning new communication skills. By
beginning with the end in mind will ensure
that a person will make a communicational
goal and accordingly they will achieve it
(Fullan, 2012). If they start with a mission
and vision they will be able to achieve what
they desired for. By the habit of putting first
things first especially in terms of
communication will ensure that they learn
communication skills at a faster rate.
Without staying positive a person cannot be
confident to speak and become a better
communicator. The sixth habit to seek first
to understand, then to be understood will
help an individual to listen to others which
will help them in learning new things
(Ranjan, Kumari & Chakrawarty, 2015). For
self-development, it is critical that
individuals form a team where they learn
from each other. In order to be a better
communicator it is also essential that a
person has the habit of making continuous
improvement in their skills.
Leader
In becoming an effective leader also these
habits can play an essential role. This can be
understood in terms of the fact that the
habits such as being proactive and start
while taking the end in the mind will allows
an individuals to make sure that they remain
positive and improve their skills while
keeping in the minds the things that they
want to achieve in their future. The things
that are actually important in the leadership
such as leading, coordination,
communication for motivation are set as
priority. If these skills are developed in
priority then there will be higher chances
that they will be able to become a better
leader. A person can become a better leader
if he is able to think win-win and with
negativity a person can never be able to
become a positive leader (McCaffery, 2018).
It is also essential for a leader to understand
others first and in developing this skill the
habit of eek first to understand, then to be
understood. The habit of synergizing in the
form of team will allow the individual to
learn the things that is necessary for learning
leadership skills. It is also essential that an
individual has long term plans for leadership
development.
