ACTIVITY 1
INDUSTRY
In this activity students are required to investigate and conceptualise the beauty industry in general and the various
segments within the industry. The cosmetic medical market is a significant growth sector within the beauty industry
and is an emerging market globally.
Students will need to research and review various market reports to then describe statistically ‘the beauty industry’,
‘the cosmetic medical industry’ in their own terms. Students should also demonstrate that they understand what is
meant by ‘spa therapies’ and ‘dermal therapies’ and ‘cosmetic medical treatments’ and how each relates, and provide
a demonstrated understanding of concepts of ‘a market’, ‘an emerging market’ and ‘an industry’, within their answers.
a) Compare and Contrast: Yes No
The beauty industry and the cosmetic medical industry (100 words)
The cosmetic medical industry involves medical practitioners who apply various therapies with the assistance of
nurses and beauty therapists. On the other hand, beauty industry is constituted merely from beauty practitioners
or therapists and cater to the needs of people for being glamorous. Some of the specific activities which are
involved in the latter are facials, makeup and so on, however, the former comprises of laser skin treatment,
liposuction and so on. It involves both surgical and non-surgical procedures and are undertaken in different
setting such as hospitals, medical practitioner's room or other centres. The similarity between the activities of
two industry is that both are undertaken to beautify a person, however cosmetic medical practitioners require to
apply medical treatments unlike the application in the beauty industry.
Beauty therapies (spa therapies) and cosmetic medical dermal therapies (50 words)
Beauty therapies or spa therapies are used for treatment of skin, body and other aspects which relate to
enhancing the beauty of individuals. These therapies are primarily available at beauty salons and also
enables the person to ameliorate the side effects of certain illness or other condition, whereas the latter
is a medical treatment which is undertaken for treating skin issues.
Non-invasive, minimally invasive and invasive cosmetic medical procedures (50 words)
Non-invasive procedures are the one which does not involve any breakage in the skin while undertaking
the treatments. Minimally invasive procedures are the surgical techniques which have minimum
incisions and thus it helps in reducing the time for wound healing. Lastly, in invasive procedures there is
no limit on the size of incision and hence takes longer time for recovery.
b) How would you assess the beauty industry in Australia, if you were to advise whether you think it is worth
entering into as a new business? What industry statistics can you point to so as to support your advice? (100

The beauty industry in the past decade has experienced rapid growth. It has been found that the industry is enjoying a
2% increase in the revenues every year which has made the industry worth $4.8 billion in the year 2016-17. some of
the specific services which can be categorized as the most preferred are skin care and color cosmetic services. It has
been found that many start-up businesses have flourished in this industry and have been making huge profits. In
addition, it has also been noted that the digital platform has made great benefits for the overall industry. Moreover, it
has also made these services highly accessible to customers from different parts.

ENVISIONING
Students need to demonstrate understanding of the difference between ‘vision’ and ‘mission’ and be able to draft
personal and professional vision and mission statements. Personalising an understanding of vision and mission
enhances its conceptual application. Students are required to draft business vision and mission statements for the
hypothetical medispa business in Assessment 2 – the business plan of this unit. The envisioning activities are also used
to assist students in choosing a business name for the virtual medispa. Learners are expected to use the ASIC Connect
website to check business name availability.
a) What is the vision and mission of a business? (100 words) Yes No
The mission statement of any business refers to the questions of 'what' or who' in respect to the company, whereas
the vision statement answers 'why' and 'how' in respect to the existence of a business. Growth of businesses tend to
bring alterations in the goals and objectives of a company, which in turn shall be reflected in the vision statement of a
company. It represents the values and beliefs on the basis of which the operations are carried out, while the mission
statement the primary goals as well as purpose for which the company is exisitng and operating in the market.
b) Write a personal vision and mission statement for yourself (think of your personal life and your career). (50 words

VALUES
In Activity 3 students need to demonstrate a conceptual understanding of business reputation and the relationship
between reputation and the values of a business. It is expected that learners will make reference to any research
undertaken.
a) Think of a manager or mentor that you highly respect. Describe the character of that person and the values they

The manager I highly respect is a highly empathetic person, who is able to effectively deal with situations and assure
the comfort of others getting affected by any action. Her decision-making skills are enhanced to be able to operate
calmly in the most pressurized situations. She always carry an optimistic attitude and all her actions are honest as well
as filled with integrity. Moreover, one of the best qualities which she possess is that of having an attitude of taking
risks and achieving great heights. This further ensures her to stay committed to growth and always be responsible
towards sustainability of actions.
b) Describe what is meant by the reputation and the values of a business? What is the relationship between them?

Reputation
Reputation refers to the brand image of a company in the eyes of various stakeholders such as the customers and
other entities existing in the market. Thus, it reflect the manner in which the company is perceived in the community
where it operates. It is built on the basis of product quality, employee relations, CSR activities and so on.
Values
These are the guiding principles of a company which primarily constitute the behavior and action
of the management. It enables them to ascertain the difference between right and wrong. Hence,
it guides through the right path which shall be perused by the company and further also assures all
the stakeholders to operate with the same integrity.
Relationship
The two concepts of values and reputation are dependent on each other as reputation refers to the manner
in which the market or community perceives a particular company. Further, this perception is built on the
manner in which company is operating and adhering to the code of conduct. This in turn is determined on the
basis of values which forms the base of their operations. One of the best examples is that of Southwest
Airlines which operates with a priority of making the employees happy before their customers. This has
enabled the company to eventually enjoy customer satisfaction and gain the reputation of being the most
friendly airlines.
c) Describe the reputation of the virtual medispa you have rebadged in an image statement. List the values that that
business will need to hold to maintain this image in a values statement. Yes No
