INTRODUCTION
Hospitality Industry is a broad term having various category of fields like lodging,
transportation, theme parks or tourism etc. Hotels provide hospitality services like
accommodation and food to its customers. This report is prepared by keeping in mind the various
trends that hospitality sector is facing, and career development plan in Hotel management.
Report will give deeper knowledge on Information needed in developing career path and ways to
collect it in from different sources. Qualifications and training required to followed and get
elevated in selected career option is also covered in the report.
Further Observations are explained after conducting and informal meeting with the
colleagues on the relevant topic to the organisation. Hotel Hilton is in hospitality industry having
more than 570 hotels serving countries across globe. One of the leading hotel brand, founded 98
years ago by Conrad Hilton.
PART II
Career Path.
Developing a career path is a process to look into individual's skills, personal
characteristics, experience and required knowledge. Obtaining what is necessary for career
development is required by plan. Areas necessitated to be formed in career path are:
Planner owe themselves a career plan: Creating path or career pathing is significant for long
term career management success. Development opportunities are discussed by the employer and
employee in performance development planning (PDP). Performance appraisal is one of the
opportunity for employee in planning process (Guevara and et.al., 2016). It embraces employee
and employer to achieve desired goal and path, development and experience required to make
progress in journey.
Developing a Plan: At first look into desired job within the organisation to develop a career a
plan. Chart a course of instruction across departments and jobs taking aid of supervisor or
manager, that would help in achieving set targets. Such that it can be followed step by step
ensuring correct path is followed.
Put Plan in writing: Written plan is intrinsic element of career development process.
Documented plan can be shared with supervisor or manager and discussed upon, and it would

help in achieving the goals. Written data is always useful to be refereed in future to ensure
success to achieve set mark and it acts as a proof for future references.
Independent plan: However, assistance is taken from others but reward recipient is the
employee. Most significant fact is no one cares as much as employee themselves do, as it is his
own career development plan.
Ways to gather information.
To collect relevant information for Career Development plan preparing a check-list is
best tool. Either individual can go for thorough understanding of hospitality sector and start
journey towards corporate ladder; or directly jump onto some job, but is not recommended and
long term success is not achieved as well. Steps that can be included in check list are:
Develop a career plan: Conducting research to gather information is one of the best method for
creating plan (Domingo and et.al., 2016.). Specifically Concentrating on accommodations, food
and beverage, bars, pubs, catering, travel/tourism etc. which a selected organisation is offering to
its customers. Hence, searcher is aware of perks and responsibilities related to the job and
facilities provided to its customers.
Assessment tests: One or more assessment tests would help to ensure career direction it should
be first step of plan development. This would help in understanding professional preferences and
types of personality or particular skills test in some specific areas related to job.
Learning nature of work: Working environment, nature of work, educational requirements,
earning potentiality, job outlook, these are the areas that need to be searched upon. So that any
kind of dispute regarding job may not occur in future between employer and employee.
Online Research: Every organisation has its own career exploration section on their website,
learn more about the job using resources available online. Own websites are company's profile
where every minute detail regarding company and its operations can be found.
Talk with contacts: Asking from peers, mentors, family, friends, professors, teachers or
neighbours about potential career is another way to gather information. It is most trustworthy for
an individual, known people are the ones who know job seeker personally and would help in
understand the job.

Position of Hotel manager requires meticulous skills like excellent communication,
management tactics, attention to customer etc. Many employees in hotels do not hold any
professional degree in that regard but start their career with entry level jobs. Having a bachelor
degree or master's degree will have more chances for elevation in career.
Communication skills are emphasized in hotel management courses, as Hotel Hilton is
providing hotel services in Australia requiring an employee to be communicative, fast and
patient. AsS they have to deal with various type of persons having different mindsets from
different communities and from various regions across world.
In order to become leader in hospitality Hotel Hilton has to be focused and build a
reputation as per expectation. Guests in hotel expects quality of services to be received by them,
they ask for attention and consistent quality of services (Yoo and Lee, 2016).
Few of the areas considered for training of managers are:
1. Comprehended tailor made plan
2. Intensive period of training for specialization in particular areas.
3. Opportunities to work in various projects of hotel.
4. Active cooperation in operational activities.

Knowledge updation of relevant topics related to Hospitality Industry.
During an informal meeting with colleagues few areas were found to be discussed in
detail:
Food Safety: To ensure food-borne illness and reducing risk related it food safety measures are
practised in kitchen. AIFS (Australian Institute of food safety) is provider of training on food
safety. They help organisations to adhere to food safety measures to protect their customers and
their health. Additionally, they inform and educate general public and food industry about
advantages of food safety practices. Hotels have to ensure food safety as per Food Act, 1997.
Development and audit of food must be conducted by hotel in businesses (The Australian
Institute of Food Safety. 2017). Hygiene is main thing that is to be ensured in kitchen.

Legal compliance: Being in Hospitality sector, Hilton hotel have to follow legislations for the
purpose of safety of customers. Few are described here in brief:
Liquor Control Act: There are independent commissions in Australia controlling sale of liquor in
each state. This law targets to control sale of liquor, consumption or misuse of alcohol and
promoting quality of staff who serve alcohol along with facilities for serving alcohol. To sell
alcoholic beverages organisation has to register itself with Liquor control commission.
Liabilities and Obligations of Hotel managers: Careers and Innkeepers Act controls obligations
or liabilities of hotel keepers. Any damages caused to guests are to be borne by hotel, this can
happen in situations like:
1. Person has booked a room and is guest of the hotel.
2. 100 dollars is maximum compensation for any damages to guest.
3. Any damage to personal vehicle of guests are not covered here.
Food Act: Preparation, composition of food are covered in this Act, along with food additives
and hygiene and cleanliness of food items.
Technology: It has been a changer for industry's operations and the way it conducts the business.
Few changes in the industry requires redeveloping infrastructure, structure of management and
staffing requirements and few happenings results in savings or improvements in the organisation
(Tower and et.al., 2017).
Some of the latest trends are:
Wi-Fi-Infrastructure: It is seen as perk by travellers in hotels, they expect seamless internet
without many interruptions. Investment is required by hotels to use technologies so that people
can use Wi-fi to continue their business and leisure activities.
Digital Conference Facility: Few people demand audio-visual facilities for their conferences,
while the amount of AV and digital equipment into a typical conference room is reasonably
minimum.
Current issues in Hotel Industry: Sustainability, branding, technology, emerging markets are
current faced issues for hotels in Australia.

Sustainability: Increased population and scarce resources are reason for challenges in
environment of hotel industry.
Technology: Hotels must invest in technology to achieve success in hospitality sector.
Customers face challenges in bookings through owned websites of hotels. To meet their
demands hotel requires developing sites and update them regularly.
Branding: Growth of social media is both an opportunity and threat to hotels, it is
staggering and will continue. It creates transparency between customers and hotels and
highlights the inconsistencies between consumer and brand.
Emerging Market: India and Chine continue to be significant markets, having absolute
growth in tourism sector than UK, France or Japan. Demand for business and leisure
hospitality drive increased demands from middle class.
Employment Conditions: Trade Unions play crucial role in workplace, by being a voice of
employees. They help to resolve workplace issues by working with management, by acting as
advocate for workers (Robinson, Ruhanen and Breakey, 2016). Ensures that minimum obligation
are to be met by employer in respect to employees. Looking for suspect breach of laws at
workplace, discrimination laws or safety laws.
Learning and Career Development: After discussion on above topics it is advised to
employees to Hilton hotel to enhance their knowledge upon these sectors in detail to improve
their career path. Technologies are to be improvised to gain increased customer base and higher
employment opportunities for existing employees in the organisation.
Staff of Hotel is to be very communication effective in order to attend clients. However,
they are trained for such skills. Food safety and legislations applicable to hotel are to be
complied as per current trends in the industry. Managers has to keep a control system in the
organisation to ensure safety controls and create a system that reviews them periodically.
Another aspect is Branding, promotional activities and knowledge of advertisements is
necessary for hotel mangers to ensure that correct brand image is depicted in the eyes of viewers
and potential customers.

CONCLUSION
After going through this report thorough knowledge of career development plan can be
gained and along with this knowledge updation in relevant areas related to Hilton Hotel. It can be
concluded that a written and deliberately planned idea should be established before going for a
job, it is not necessary.
