One of the personal reason which might influence Kim-Ly reluctance to seek
medical care is a low perceived need for seeking treatment. Kim-Ly might believe
that the coughing and shortness of breath will end and she will feel alright without
visiting the hospital. According to Price et al., (2016), this is ranked as one of the
most common reasons why people avoid going to the hospital. Kim-Ly thinks that the
illness she is suffering is not severe, and the body will fight it off without visiting the
doctor to seek medication. Price et al. (2016) indicates that a large number of patients
are dismissive of the symptoms they are experiencing, and hence they took time
before visiting the hospital, and some uses over the counter drugs to ease the
symptoms.
Another personal that may influence Kim-Ly reluctance to seek medical care is
reservations about the quality of care (Osborn et al., 2016). Mrs. Kim-Ly's previous
experience with doctors might influence the perception that she has about seeking

treatment in the hospital. One of the reasons why she could have developed a wrong
perception of the quality of care is the experience of poor communication (Lokdam et
al., 2018). Research has established that some patients may avoid visiting the hospital
because they don’t like how the doctors ask questions or how they provide advice to
the patients (Dixit & Sambasivan, 2018). Kim-Ly might also avoid visiting the
hospital because the treatment she was offered during the previous visit was not
effective (Tran, Nguyen, Nong & Nguyen, 2016). This might have led Mrs. Kim-Ly
to believe that the treatment offered in the hospital does not work, and hence this
might make her reluctant to visit the hospital.
Kim-Ly might avoid visiting the hospital because of self-ascribed personality
traits. Some patients are fearful of receiving negative or discouraging diagnoses once
they visit the hospital (Bastos, Harnois, and Paradies, 2018). They, therefore, decide
to stay at home rather than visit the hospital and get an unfavorable diagnosis that
may affect them psychologically. Other patients also avoid the hospital for fear of
needles or dislike of medication. This factor is significant because it might make the
patient go to extreme lengths to avoid going to the hospital, and hence their health
condition might worsen.
Mrs. Kim-Ly might be reluctant to go to the hospital because she feels that her
family has abandoned her and that they don’t care about her. She feels lonely since
she lives alone, and the family members visit her only once in a while. The
frustrations of being lonely always and with no one to take care of her might make her
avoid visiting the hospital.
The culture of Mrs. Kim-Ly could be encouraging the use of unconventional/
traditional medicine. If Kim-Ly believes that traditional medicine is more effective
