INTRODUCTION
Coaching and mentoring are development activities in which coach and
mentor guides, directs and controls the activities of people along with establishing
strong relationship with them that is based on trust. Coaching is the process of giving
support to the individuals, teams or groups in achieving self-awareness, self-
management skills and self-efficiency. Mentoring is a developmental process in which a
well experienced person shares his knowledge, skills and suggestions with an individual
who require it in his job, study or in any aspect through a series of conversations. Here,
Tesco has been chosen with keeping in consideration of which coaching and mentoring
will be defined along with various concepts related to them.

What is mentoring and coaching?
Mentoring and coaching are two different things. They are assumed to be similar but in actual,
both are different from each other. Coaching is task oriented and mentoring is relationship
oriented.
In coaching, coach is focused on the specific development areas of an individual and issues
faced by him. It is for short term to achieve specific and immediate goals.
Coaching is performance driven. It has purpose to improve the individual’s performance on the
job. This involves either enhancing current skills or acquiring new one.
Overall, it can be said that coaching is an activity under which coach directs a person to achieve
some specific result and helps him to improve awareness and knowledge with regard of
company objectives. Through this, individual can able to increase their performance.

Significance of Coaching-
In context of TESCO, coaching plays a significant role for guiding and
teaching their employees and workers for achieving company’s success. This is an
important activity which influences the employee’s performance and their efficiency as
well.
Proper coaching reflects individual’s development as well as firm’s growth.
Coach is a person who renders coaching. His major aim is to help and empower others
to achieve personal and organisational goals. There is a huge importance of coaching in
the business purpose. It is explained as follows-

In TESCO, there is the need of well trained employees who can effectually deal with
the customers and satisfy their requirement and queries by proper communication and
coordination. Only coaching is the activity under which coach can provide training
and guidance to work within organisation.
When Tesco introduces new system and program then it is required to provide
coaching to their workers.
