TITLE
Disagreement surrounding Animal Testing in Cosmetic Industry in the UK. The Body
Shop Case Study.
CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION
Overview of the Research
Cosmetic testing on animals is a kind of animal testing that is use to test the safety as
well as hypoallergenic properties of goods for use by an individual (Berggren and et. al., 2015).
In this dissertation, given organisation is The Body Shop which is a British skin care and
cosmetics organisation that was introduced by Anita Roddick in 1976. Currently, company has
approximately 1000 products which it sells in over 3049 franchised and owned stores globally in
66 countries. It is a first global and international cosmetic company (Bessems and et. al., 2015).
Beside this, the Body Shop cosmetic industry will take the campaign or approaches to the top
authority, the UK, and request a global meeting banning cosmetic product testing on animals.
Cosmetic is the most developing industry in the UK, that is widely concern on providing
good or effective products and services to their significant customers in regards to maintain its
brand image within the mind set of users. Cosmetic Testing on animals is considered as a sort of
animal testing which is applied to test or analyse the hypoallergenic aspects and safety of
cosmetic products for human body. Animal testing is basically occurs on the full finished
cosmetic items or it may also occurs on the individual ingredients within a formulation on
animals like mice, rabbits and other animals (Braithwaite, 2013).
Research Topic
“Disagreement surrounding Animal Testing in Cosmetics Industry in the UK. The Body
Shop Case Study.”
Aim of the research project
Main aim of this dissertation proposal is to identify the influence of disagreement
surrounding Animal Testing and its impact on Cosmetic industry (Doss, 2018). This dissertation
help in analysing the effect of disagreement surrounding Animal Testing and its direct influence
on Cosmetic industry (Laquieze, Lorencini and Granjeiro, 2015).

Significance of the Research
The research taken into consideration is based on the issue of disagreement surrounding
Animal Testing and its potential influence on the Cosmetic Industry (DeMello, 2013). The
present area of study is required for each individual to know about the animal testing and its
impact on the global environment. In this research proposal, one of the main problem is
Disagreement surrounding Animal Testing which highly impact on animals and business in a
direct manner. For this, research is more essential and significant for the investigator to identify
impact of cosmetic testing on animal(Hennigs, Karampournioti and Wiedmann, 2016).
Inclusion and exclusion Criteria
Inclusion criteria for this particular research is different sort of animal testing,
environmental influence that are caused due to animal testing, information about organisation
that use animal testing for their products, the causes of animal testing on the environment and the
exclusion criteria for this research is failure to adhere to pre-test requirements, infection,
evidence of altered training of people etc.
CHAPTER 2: RESEARCH OBJECTIVES OR HYPOTHESIS
Research Aim
This considered to be the most essential part of the research thus it refers as the
predetermined statement which signifies the research issue in the form of clear or concise
statement (Hamschmidt, 2017). The potential aim of this research is "To identify the influence
of disagreement surrounding Animal Testing and its impact on Cosmetic industry". A case
study on The Body Shop. This is a wide area of study which is basically focuses on describing
the effects of animal testing for analysing the relevancy of cosmetic products. The animal testing
is unauthentic in nature and this specified area of study provides wide area of knowledge about
the animal testing for the cosmetic products.
Research Objectives
Research objectives is refers as a clear, concise or declarative statement that gives proper
direction to the researcher to investigate the variables in proper manner. Thus research objective
is more significant and essential aspect for the researcher to accomplish objective and aim of
research effectively and systematically. This section is recognised as the essential part of
dissertation that is based on aim of the research. This section is basically categorised among two

parts like dependent or independent variable (DeMello, 2012). The objectives are basically
directed towards analysing the potential relationship among the variables. The existing
investigation work is based on the issue of Animal Testing in Cosmetic Industry in the UK and
in this objectives are created that clarify the key aspects of the research in appropriate manner.
The potential objectives of this research are associated as under:
To understand the concept of Animal Testing in Cosmetic industry.
To analysis the issue faced by animals in testing of cosmetic products on them. To make decision of Disagreement surrounding Animal Testing in cosmetic industry or
to The Body Shop.
Research Questions
Research question is defined as a short, specific or debatable statement that centre the
overall research (Basketter and et. al., 2012). This section is directly interconnected with the aim
and objectives of the research. This section is effective in execution of literature review through
the perspective of various writers or authors. There are some important questions made by
investigator according to the research objectives which are described as under:
What is the concept of Animal Testing in Cosmetic industry?
What type of issue faced by animals in testing of cosmetic products on them?
How decision of Disagreement surrounding Animal Testing in cosmetic industry or to
Body Shop are effected on them?
CHAPTER 3: LITERATURE REVIEW
Literature is identify as a type of information source. There are different kind of literature
source which is used by the researcher in order to collect accurate and relevant amount of
information from the respondents. Beside this, books, journals and questionnaire are identified as
a main source of literature review. In this different number of authors are give their opinion and
point of view about the research topic (Mamayko, Boyko and Merkulova, 2016). It is also
referred as the main and essential factor of research. This section involves views of various
authors and scholars, an investigator analysis the view and opinion of writers in order to analysis
a term and to know more about it in detail and in-depth manner. All this support an investigator

as in this appropriate theoretical framework is created through the accumulation of data from
secondary sources.
The present exploration work is based on the study of analysing the influence of
disagreement surrounding Animal Testing and its impact on Cosmetic industry. This is a wide
area of research and has a huge scope for investigator or learner in their personal as well as
professional life. In this proper theoretical framework is created on examine the concept of
Animal Testing in Cosmetic industry, the issues faced by animals in testing of cosmetic products
on them and the disagreement of animal testing by the company of Body Shop. In this
informations are gathered for the purpose of addressing the research issue in appropriate manner.
Concept of Animal Testing in Cosmetic industry.
According to the Murnaghan, (2018), animal testing is also known as animal research,
experimentation. It is used to support an animal who are faced issue and impact of cosmetic
products produced by cosmetic industry. An animal test is refer a scientific test or experiment in
which an animal is forced or effected to experience something that is possible to cause them
distress, suffering, pain or lasting harm. Animal testing is an effective term which is refers to
procedures worked on living animals for aim of investigation into basic diseases and biology.
As per the Curtin kayla, 2108, This animal testing are in practices from the Aristotle, they
test cosmetic and biomedical on animal before using those cosmetic on human being. Majority of
people avoid using those product which are still test upon animals and some sees this is a good
practices. These tests are conducted to understand the way at which proportion human body
reacts and to asses the safety as well as effectiveness upon human. The companies who market
their product overseas are doing animal testing of their cosmetic products. There is an alternative
way to test cosmetic products rather than testing those products on animals. If customer get to
know that these products are tested upon animals then public relation will effect and it will also
destroy the customer loyalty (Ashton and et. al., 2014). The different types of animal tests to
safeguard the ingredients and formulas in cosmetic are:
Guinea pig maximization test:- This test measure the sensitivity of ingredients and
formulas or involve some type of injections which are injected in skin or in body.
Draize test:- It is identify as an effective procedures applied to find out dermal irritation.
In this albino rabbits are used because they have more sensitive skin or body than
humans. Along with this, semi occlusive patches of the trial material are located on skin

and data point are taken at twenty four and seventy two hours. This determines dermal
irritation from which human's might suffers, these are tested on rabbit who have more
sensitive skin than human (Urde, Baumgarth and Merrilees, 2013). The test reading is
taken between 24 hours to 72 hours and then according to result skin of rabbit is graded
whether it's erythema and edema. Eye irritancy test:- This procedures defines any eye irritation, as they put the drop in
rabbit eye and evaluate it for 24 hours and up-to 7 days as to analyse whether it's safe for
human eye or not. Such type of test happens if the cosmetic product gets into the eyes.
This test involves albino rabbit’s animal again and compounds or elements are put into
the eyes. In this evaluation take place at twenty four, forty eighth, seventy two hours and
up to seven days.
Type of issue faced by animals in testing of cosmetic products on them.
According to Shatzman Celia, 2018, The product development to packaging to
marketing, has a long journey and numerous steps are taken to secure the products. The animals
are still suffering and died due to shampoo testing, eyeliners, creams, mascara and other
cosmetic products. These are tested by dropping into throats, eye or on skins of rabbit, mice,
guinea pig, rats before they are killed. Animals are suffered endlessly and it's not needed to test
those products on animals before trying on human beings. Numerous cosmetic manufacturing
ingredients declared or has been deemed safe to use. The alternatives to test cosmetic products
are tissue and cell testing as these provide more reliable result rather than animal testing of
products. As more than 100 millions animals are died due to cosmetic testing on them and
millions are suffered due to skin issues. The animals used to faced painful tests for the
demonstration that product is effective and safe for human being. The numerous laboratories for
biology lessons, medical training, curiosity-driven experimentation, chemical testing, drug &
food testing and cosmetic testing people are used animals and they brutality harmed. The testing
on animals to human has proven misleading and problematic in many ways (Hartung and et. al.,
2011). As these are tested on their skins due to which they faced a lot pain and their hairs are
also shaved just to test the sensitivity of products on animals skins. Animals eyes are burned
brutality just to test eyeliners and eyeshadow by dropping some amount. To stop these issues it's
essential to adopt alternative to test and most of the ingredients are considered very safe, so no
need to test cosmetics every time.

Each year approximately 100 million animals namely mice, frogs, cats, dogs, mice,
hamsters, fish, birds, monkey, pigs etc. are killed in United State. Laboratories for medical
training, biology lessons, curiosity-driven experimentation, and food, chemical, drug and
cosmetic testing. Before animal’s deaths, few are strained to inhale toxic fumes and many other
are immobilized or floating in restraints devices for some hours. Some animals have gap drilled
into their skulls and some other have their skin injured off. Such type of testing also impact on
animals by crushing its spinal codes. As per the point of view of Bessems and et. al., (2015)
Cosmetic test on animal is also impact on its body and can cause considerable distress and pain
including swollen eyes, blindness, sore bleeding skin, organ damage, birth defects, internal
bleeding, convulsions and death. At the end of test, pain relief is not given to animals, so it can
cause as their death, normally by neck-breaking, asphyxiation or decapitation. Thus testing of
cosmetic products on animal is highly damage their body parts and kill their life.
Decision of Disagreement surrounding Animal Testing in cosmetic industry or to The Body
Shop are effected on them.
According to Liou stephanie, 2010, The animal like rats and mice shared the same
similarities in genetic and physiological like human, if animal testing is going on, then it directly
influences the living of animals. It's important for government to make decisions in accordance
to disagree the surroundings of animals testing (Hartung, 2011). The numerous petitions are
signed and campaigns are launched to stop the testing cosmetics on animals. The body shop
company have signed the petition related top set the animal testing and save them by using
alternative ways which much cheaper, easier and quicker to responds. Through alternative
methods no one is get harmed. The companies should take decisions in terms to stop testing
products on animals. The products which company manufactured should use reliable and
authentic products which don't need testing. The government had launched so many campaigns
which are related to ban animal testing in cosmetic labs. The first company get their petition to
UN with having a lot people in their side who are animal friendly and finally they take their
campaign to different countries as to ensure the law adopted and enforce everywhere. The
animal testing is get banned in EU since five year to protect the animals from harmful activities.
From this millions of animals get died and faced numerous painful activities just to teat a
particular product. The alternatives are identifies best way to protect animals through harmful
activities. The effective decisions are taken to implement strategic decisions for campaign. The

body shop campaign gets incredible responses to protect animals. This is banned because people
are know a days become more cruelty free and vegan are the major two issues for customers in
market. These are main aspects due to which decisions are taken to disagreement the animal
testing in cosmetic companies (Yeon Kim and Chung, 2011). There are numerous innovations
and rapidly change technology also helps companies to use non-animal testing techniques. It's a
better time to call fro an end to animal testing by using alternatives methods. These decisions are
also very important for welfare of animals and problems which they during the testing. The
testing reduce their quality life and involves a lot pain, it's morally wrong as well as unethical
practices. The accurate decisions are required to from just to protect the animals from unethical
practices.
In this The Body Shop make an effective decision to stop disagreement surrounding
animal testing and its impact on animals. In an international marketplace, it is essential for all
nations to ban cosmetic testing on animals. In this cosmetic industry make an agreement or
decision to launch their global campaign and to call on legal authority around the globe to ban
animal testing for cosmetic. Animal test are progressively state replaced with cheaper, quicker
and more reliable non-animal methods. All these are identify as modern methods which are more
relevant and valuable to people and have been analysis to predict an individual reactions much
better than old and outdated animal tests (About Cosmetics Animal Testing, 2018). Beside this,
The Body Shop can prove their cosmetic products or items are safe by applying established
ingredients. For example: approximately 20,000 ingredients in EU's database for which security
and safety information is available. There are different ways to overcome impact of cosmetic
testing on animals. All this ways are adopted by The Body Shop and make an effective decision
to implement an effective strategy. Beside this, they always purchase cruelty-free products,
educate others, help stop cosmetics testing in the US, make a donation etc. All this are identify as
one of the main and essential ways to reduce the impact of cosmetic testing on animals. The
Body shop can stop animal testing impact on animals and still produce, existing, safe and new
beauty products, simply by producing the cruelty-free way. It is do by the organisation by
applying different number of ingredients or products with a long detail of safe use.
CHAPTER 4: RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
It refers to the process of gathering data or information for the purpose of creating
decisions in regards to the research activities. Research methodology is an effective and main
Document Page
process in Dissertation. It is used by an investigator with purpose to collect data and information
for the motive of making accurate business decisions (Marx and et. al., 2016). The essential
component of research methodology are associated as under:
Type of Investigation: The section of the research is based on the data that are
accumulated by the researcher. There are basically two types of research which is used by
researcher to executing each and every activity of research in appropriate manner. In this, one is
qualitative research and other one is quantitative research (Nicolopoulou-Stamati, Hens and
Sasco 2015). According to the topic qualitative research is used because it is more suitable for
collecting quality information. In the present investigation work qualitative research tool has
been applied by the researcher as it is effective in creating a theoretical framework for addressing
the research issue in appropriate manner(Cole and Morgan, 2011).
Research Design: This section is categorised among three major aspects like descriptive,
exploratory or experimental research design. It is identify as a set of procedures and methods
used in gathering and evaluating measures of the research problems. According to the research
and the topic, descriptive design is more suitable and valuable because it will be support them in
driving accurate conclusion. Descriptive research design is based on detailed analysis of the
qualitative data. Exploratory research design is seeks to describe subject matter that is being
investigated and also provide the answers of questions. However Experimental design is used to
develop relationship among effect and cause of situation (Rezai and et. al., 2012). In the present
investigation work descriptive research design has been applied by the researcher which is most
suitable tool for the qualitative investigation.
Research Approach: This encompasses on two major types one is inductive or other one
is deductive research approach. Both approaches are essential but according to the topic
deductive approach is more suitable for understanding the respondent's response about the topic.
Inductive approach is generally based on qualitative investigation and deductive research
approach is associated with creating hypothesis that is depend on the existing theory to test
hypothesis. In the present investigation work inductive research approach has been used by the
researcher.
Data Collection Tools: This is the most considerable aspect of the research as data and
information are the key element because the overall activity of an investigation is based on the
data which are accumulated by the researcher (Girotto, 2013). Data collection are opf two type

primary and secondary. In the present investigation work primary and secondary both tools are
applied.
Access to data and research ethics:- Use of secondary information mostly revolve
around actual harm or hurt to individual subject and problem of return for consent. Such type of
data vary in forms of the amount of information identifying in it. The research ethics principles
are mainly related with informed consent, confidentiality and anonymity. All this are identify as
a role of investigator to communicate information about research objectives in clear manner to
the respondents. In this, investigator should ask simple and easy questions to the participants and
make sure such questions not harm and effect on individual (Locke and et. al., 2017).
Limitations:- There are so many limitation or difficulties which are basically witnessed
at the period of conducting investigation. According to the topic or research, time is identify as
one of the main limitation because research topic is vast or large for getting appropriate response
from the respondents side (Madia, Worth and Corvi, 2016). For this, researcher need accurate
time period for identifying proper response of participants. So in the entire it can be described
that time is not maximum for the all activities of research.
CHAPTER 5: FINDINGS
According to primary research:-
It refers to the investigation that has been done by the researcher for the first time in order
to collect the fresh data for current topic of concern. For conducting research over
“Disagreement surrounding Animal Testing in Cosmetic Industry in the UK. The Body Shop
Case Study” questionnaire method has been used. In this number of questions has been formulate
along with some options in order to fix the criteria to collect information. The reason behind this
is that the topic is very vast and it become impossible to collect information effectively as
researcher is required to concise the data from the available information in order to present it
effectively which is very time consuming. So by preparing questionnaire it the information
collection criteria must be specified and responded will provide only provide their view over the
scope which is available in front of them.
This questionnaire is made available to 30 respondents in order to collect the information
regarding the current research topic. From this survey it has been found that majority of people
have knowledge about the concept of animal testing as it is one of the most popular practice
which is performed by cosmetic brand from several years. It has been found cosmetic testing is

mainly performed over rabbit and rat in order to determine the side effect of any cosmetic before
its launch. These actions will help them in providing cosmetic products to its customers which
are free from any sort of side effects that may harm their skin or health after applying it over
their body. This includes several type of test such as acute toxicity, eye irritancy and skin
sensitivity so that after the launch of product these issues may not be faced by customers of any
popular brand as it may affect their goodwill. In addition to this if any of these may be faced by
customer after applying the cosmetics then it may lead to negative publicity of company which
also harm its goodwill and company has to loose its customer base. The questionnaire prepared

According to secondary research:-
It refers to the type of research in which data or information is collected from the
investigation which is already performed by someone else and is quite similar with the current
research topic of investigator. Animal testing is type of experiment which is examine upon
animals to check the product safety and effectiveness. These experiments helps companies to
tremendously find out whether that product is safe for customers or not. Animal testing is
considered as unethical and unmoral practices run in organisation. The companies should avoid
these practices as they harm their relation with public and also demolished customer loyalty
towards product. This is considered as wrong treatment towards animals merely and it's not right
to treat them like a tool as well as exploit animals like that. The animals should have equal right
as humans have to live out of full, free of sufferings and pain. The animals are used to test
cosmetics by which million of animals get harmed and killed. Since, year's these practices are
going in society, so many petitions are get signed by animal lovers and a lot campaigns are also
launched but still many countries used animals for cosmetic testing. Several countries banned
this experiment process so to protect animals but still in some countries these are going on. The
first this implementation take place in UK to protect unlawful impact upon animals. The
experiments are take place on finished products as well as on ingredients which are used to make
cosmetic products. The test are take place upon rats, mice, pigs etc. The cosmetic products are
deemed to safe and it's a responsibility of manufacture to provide safe products as no animal
testing should be perform in companies.
This research will provide potential knowledge base about the understanding of animal
testing within the cosmetic industry. Its direct influence on the animals or environment. In the
United Kingdom and around the rest of the European Union, testing cosmetic items or their
ingredients on animals is basically banned because it hurts the animals and affect on the overall
global environment. This means that it is illegal to sell or market a cosmetic product if animal
testing has taken place on the finished cosmetic or its ingredients before being sold in the UK.
The wide research on this topic is required to gather appropriate amount of information to
overcome he issue by accumulation of actual facts or figures and how it affects the overall global
environment. The different ways are used to test cosmetic safety, by which animals are not get
harmed by society. The one day come when animal testing of cosmetic will be considered thing

of the past. The society wants to get rid of these practices, no one wants to hurt animals. The
scientists are working on to find out alternative of cosmetic testing rather than tissue testing. The
animals are harmed due to eye infections and their body are totally shaved just to test sensitivity
of products. The animal testing should be banned for cosmetic as well as for medical. The
majority of people are avoiding products which are harmful to animals, they don,t use products
which are tested on animals. The companies always hide these practices and to maintain
appropriate public relation. There are brands who uses animals for cosmetic testing, which
immoral and unethical of society. The people should avoid using these methods by which
animals get hurt and feel numerous kind of plain just to provide reliable product to customers in
time.
It has been found that testing of animals on cosmetic is considerably or arguably the most
controversial area of animal testing. It is also a major issue of society and the society or its
people are in-against of these kind of activities held of people or any organisation. Although it
was banned in the country of United Kingdom in the year of 1998, it is also banned in the other
areas of globe. But still majority of organisations are performing animal testing in order to
determine the quality as well as side effects that a particular cosmetic product will have after it
has been used by a human being. These actions are performed by the companies in order to
maintain their brand image within marketplace by keep on offering high quality product or
services top its customers. But these experiments leads to several skin or health related issues to
animal that are spoiling their life and they dead during this experiments. In this present research
work Body Shop is the chosen organisation, it is a British cosmetic, skin care and perfume
company. The company was establish in the year of 1976 by the potential efforts of Dame Anita
Roddick. The company is in-against of animal testing for cosmetic products. The company has
taken a step and taking effective participation in the campaigning of banning animal testing for
cosmetic products. the company or its higher authority has requested to the UK government to
take effective actions to ban animal testing for cosmetic products. The company is using highly
innovative and qualitative ingredients in its cosmetic products.
The issues which animals faced are countless and due to this animals are died. The
animals are considered more sensitive as compare to human then to these cosmetics are tested
on their eye and infected injections injured in them. The quality of product is tested just to earned

innovative ways to make products free of animal testing. The some test are conducted on
animals skins and dropped the liquid in rabbits eye by which they died also. The animals are
faced numerous problems in between testing, it's essential for organisation to protect animals
from different health issues. Once, the test are perform on them they really become unhealthy
and it's become very difficult for organisation to protect them from these unethical practices. The
body shop and more companies are no more guarantee that products are cruelty free because it is
detected when products are tested upon animals. The companies have launched many campaigns
to protect animals from hunting and a lot of petitions are signed by different companies. The
various countries government also take decisions in respect to protect animals as they make the
law that it's banned to test products on animals. This is considered unlawful practice in some
countries like UK, Europe, India, etc. But after making all these efforts also majority of
companies also performing animal testing secretly just to keep their brand equity as strong as
possible by offering tested products.
The society should also work on this to protect animals from testing. The alternatives
techniques are launched and more technology friendly techniques are about launched to set the
cosmetic safety and effectivenesses. The ingredient are considered safe then to companies used
animal testing just to harm them. They are found in laboratories in a very bad conditions and
some are died between the experiments. Minimum time these experiments take is around 24
hours to 7 days. When the body shop wants to launch the product in different countries then they
stop testing their products on animals. The animals like rabbit, rat and mice have same genetic
that doesn't mean people test the cosmetic products first on them and then applied those products
on customers. The animals are very sensitive and it's not possible for them to protect themselves.
The experiments on animals are always unacceptable as its cause the animal suffering and faced
numerous issues in facing problems. The society and companies should always take decisions in
respective to protect animals rights and don't harm them just to protect the people health it's
considered inappropriate. The animals should always protected from unlawful practices and
people should considered or use alternative ways by which animals are not get harmed or
impacted. In several countries these practices are banned and considered as unlawful but to
some companies uses this testing to make their cosmetic more effective and safe for their
customer. The animals are faced a lot of issues and suffered from pain just because of these

testing on animals. The companies should always chose alternative method to test cosmetic
products by which animals get protected.
From the research conducted it has been evaluated that Cosmetic testing on animal is still
a more risk across the globe, with over eighty percent of nations still having no legislation
against testing in cosmetic products. Thus, it is identified and shown, large number of the nations
not need safety data or information based on cosmetic test on animals and certain options are
available. Beside this, The Body Shop use effective and innovative cruelty-free ingredients or
elements in their products.
There are major brands which are still doing animal testing to test whether these products
are safe or effective. Through this skin and eye irritations are tested on rabbits by dropping into
eye or onto the shaved skin. These testing are involved in development of cosmetic whether
individual ingredient are tested or finished product is tested upon rabbits, rates, mice and other
animals. The government of all over the world is requesting every cosmetic company not to test
their products on animals, so many labs are available to test cosmetic products (Adler and et. al.,
2011). This method would lead to the death of millions animals just to test the cosmetic safety.
In several countries animal testing is banned and people avoid using those products which are
tested on animals. Just to safeguard the human skin and body numerous testing are conducted on
animals. Through this test animals are harm just maintain the human safety. There are many
alternatives are available in market despite of that people are using animal testing as it subjected
to be very crucial test in the world. So, many animals are injected gassed, killed or force-fed just
to test cosmetics as these are unnecessary and unethical practices. The government should
banned the animal testing as they have to make effective laws and people should used non-
animal methods to test cosmetic products. The countless animals are blinded, burned, cut open,
poisoned, drugged behind the closed laboratories. There are several cosmetic companies which
avoid using animal testing and finalised their products. To provide safety and security to animals
it's essential to companies to avoid using animals for testing.

whereas 10 are unaware about the same. So it can be found out that animal testing is one of the
recent topic due to which respondents are aware about it.
Theme 2: Types of animal use in testing of cosmetic products?
Interpretation: As per the above given graph, it can be summarised types of animals used
for cosmetic testing. In this 10 out of 30 respondents are said rabbit are used because rabbits are
gentle in nature due to which it is easy to handle. Moreover, rabbits are cheap or less expensive
to maintain and at last they breed faster than other animals and due to this rabbits are used in the
cosmetic testing. 10 respondents said that rat are used because it is easy for companies to check
the effectivity of product by rubbing it on rats body. Main reason behind using rats is to identify
various problems which could be arise after the use of product. At last, 8 respondents said mus
are used and remaining respondents are prefer other animals
Theme 3: Types of tests done on animals?
Interpretation: From the above given graph or information, it can be determined types
of test used on animals. In this, 10 out of 30 respondents said as eye lrritancy is done on animals
as they check the level of irritancy product produced after using it, other 10 are believe, acute
toxicity is done on animals as it would be helpful for company to identify exposure to danger by
a chemical used in the product, 7 respondents are said as skin sensitization on done on animals,
to find out different type of skins which customers can use it. For instance, sometimes it is
clearly mentioned on the product that, this product is only for oily skin. Remaining are prefer to
other.
Theme 4: Animal testing harmful on environment?
Interpretation: From the above given data, it can be determined influence of animal
testing on environment. In this 25 out of 30 respondents are said yes because due to killing of
animals, it creates in balance in the species which could be dangerous for future. Along with this,
test done on animals are not fully reliable in nature as only few genes are same with human
whereas 5 said no because they think that it is one of the simple way of identify results which
could change the face of cosmetic industry.

Theme 6: Types of issue faced by animals during the testing procedures of cosmetic
products?
Interpretation: According to the above given information, it can be concluded issues
faced by animals during the testing procedures of cosmetic products. For this, respondents are
give equal chances to skin irritation, eye irritation and any kind of toxicity. Every respondents
thinks that reason behind these issues faced by animals are, inhaling of toxic fumes which can
even cost death of animals. Moreover product are rub on the skin of animals after shaving due to
which skin irritation occurs on their body. Many times products are put in to the eyes of animals
so to find out the negative impact of product in the eyes and due to which eye irritation causes.
Theme 7: Requirement of making effective decision in regard to reducing animal testing
for cosmetic products?
Interpretation: According to the above given data, it can be concluded requirement for
making effective decision in regards to reducing animal testing for cosmetic products. For this 24
out of 30 respondents are agree because they considered this act as cruel and against the
humanity due to which they are fully against using of animals in cosmetic product testing.
Whereas 6 are not agree about the same because it is easy and less expensive for company to test
their product which makes a favourable impact in the profitability of business.
Theme 8: Type of roles are performed by government of UK in case of disagreement
surrounding animal testing in cosmetic industry?
Interpretation: From the above given chart, it can be summarised roles performed by
government in case of disagreement surrounding animal testing in cosmetic industry. For this, 20
out of 30 respondents are said government should ban on animal testing of cosmetic products
because it is against the humanity plus many non profit organisation of animal welfare are
against it due to which they have to ban the using of product on animals. Whereas 10 are suggest

level resulting in low sales and low profitability for company. Apart from this, at the time of
using animals, there are many laws which should be followed by them due to which more funds
is incurred by the cosmetic company. Whereas 8 out of 30 are disagree about the same because
they think that animal testing is one the cheapest way of identifying effectivity of product due to
which more margin goes in to the pocket of company. Moreover, goodwill of the company
depends on the product made by the company instead of process or ways they used it to make it.
Discussion on secondary research
The topic chosen for research “To identify the influence of disagreement surrounding
animal testing and its impact on cosmetic industry” is highly debatable in recent era as in many
of the cases, animal died due to side effects of the medicine or beauty products used on them.
Animals used while testing the products are rabbits, pigs, rats, mice etc. because they somewhat
possess the DNA of human beings which makes the testing more credible and authenticate in
nature. After researching on the topic for many days and by collecting information from different
sources it can be said that researcher has attain their aims and objectives which they have
decided in the starting. Whole research is done with the help of secondary and primary research
and by reading various credible articles from magazines, online platform, paper etc. These will
help researcher to study and know more about the topic resulting in increase in knowledge of
researcher which will make the research more trustworthy and interesting to read. This research
would assist leaner and organisation to get insights about the topic and why they should concern
about the product testing and what are the negative impact of testing on the life of animals. Most
of the big companies are using animals as product testing materials as they does not speak like a
human being but on the other side it creates negative impact on the wildlife which leads to
deteriorates of environment. Learners would be able to identify how cruel the product testing is
and how they were killed after completing their task. But on the opposite site, company's are not
happy with the banned of animal usage as their spending on the product is increased to a certain
level and besides this their profitability has also goes down due to increase in cost of production.
Company should opt various ways through which they can revamp their circumstances like
usage of ingredients which are already tested and verified by the scientist so that extra cost of
testing would be saved resulting in higher profits for company. Beside this, in vitro approach can
be used by company in which organs on chips contains human cells on which company can test
their cosmetics products. After development and enhancement in technology, researchers have

developed computer models in which all the effects or side effects of testing can be mapped and
analysed through one click. It would helped the company to test their product in no time results
in better productivity for company. At last Micro dosing techniques can be used by company to
test their products in which small dose is tested to human volunteers and effects can be measured
with the help of different software. So it can be said that banning usage of animal in cosmetic
industry is favourable for the environment as well as for animals also.
CHAPTER 7: CONCLUSION
In the lights of above report it can be concluded that for manufacturing of any new
cosmetic products the life of animals are put in danger because due to negative effect of product,
mostly animals are died or they killed by the company so that radiation wont be scatter in their
genes. Different trial are being conducted on the skin of various animals and because of that
every years thousands of animals are being killed. The main reason to conduct several test on the
skin of animals is because of their body which is more sensitive then humans body due to which
it is easy to measure and monitor the positive as well as negative effect of the product. Moreover,
animals are easy to handle and less expensive to test on instead of other methods which incurs
high amount of money. The animals testing are banned in several countries to protect animal
from suffering and protect the rights of animals.
Government should come up with new ideas to stop this activities as animals are also as
important as human being just to complete the life cycle. There must be different rules and
regulation on every company which are involved in the sector of cosmetics so that they would
opt technique or approach to test the cosmetic product. Awareness program can also be
conducted in order to minimise this problem. If this kind of problem will continue in future then
there might be possibility that various species of animals might never be found again resulting in
loss of habitat and resources which is a negative sign for future environmental aspect.
These tests are being conducted every year just to protect the life of human being. There
are most of the company who doesn't disclose the information regarding product testing just to
increase or sustain their customer. Companies can plan something new for their product testing
as that will not effect the life of animals. In various country it is illegal to use any kind of
products on animal skin as they also have the liberty to enjoy their life. The animals which are
mostly used in this tests are rabbit, rats and guinea pig. There are many countries which have the
treaty with UN to protect the life of animals as they are necessary for this ecosystem. In
Document Page
European Union it is not allowed to hunt any animal for the purpose of testing cosmetic products
since last five years.
CHAPTER 8: IMPLICATIONS OF THE PRACTICE
The considered investigation report is based on the disagreement surrounding animal
testing on cosmetic industry within UK. This refers as the most controversial issue in the globe
and also has a huge impact on the overall global environment. From the discussion of the report
it has been recommended that Animal testing has been a common practice since so long. Back
then, large as well as small cosmetic industries are used animals to test out biomedical practices
before performing them on human beings. In today’s world, it has been recognised that the
beauty community test out its products on animals before sending them out to consumers. Body
Shop is a large British cosmetic or skin care company, which is majorly focused on avoiding
animal testing for analysing their products. The research has taken a wide step in regards to
banning the animal testing for cosmetic products. The company should also encourage the
government of UK to develop some effective laws and legislations to protecting animals from
such kind of unauthentic testing. Company should also adopt innovating techniques or measures
in order to testing the reliability of their cosmetic products. Body Shop should include natural
ingredients in their skin care products so that the chances of skin diseases are less. Company
also requires to test their beauty products in innovative way like by the help of machines in
respect to providing effective product facilities to their customers. Company should also consider
chemical less products in respect to providing long term benefits to their users or also keep the
focuses on analysing rivals strategy in order to attaining higher competitive edge within the
commercial centre.
