INTRODUCTION
Cross cultural management is basically a study on organization behavior. It can also be
considered to be as a procedure which includes managing the issues arises due to difference in
culture while working in a team (Jackson,2018.).In organizational context, cross cultural
management is mainly concerned with leading employees belonging to different culture. It is the
procedure which is conducted in order to manage people at workplace. Cross culture
management is very much crucial especially during the time of project. An effective cross
cultural management can be helpful in developing trust as well as enhancing communication
(Cutler, 2018).
The report will have focus on identifying the issues in the given case study of dam project
in Tanzania. Study will also include the few suggestions which can be helpful in resolving the
problems' addressee in the given case study.
MAIN BODY
Reflective report
The given case study is all about the dam project in Tanzania. Dam project is very big
and requires huge capital investment. In addition to this, implementation of such types of
construction project is quite risky as negative publicity can lead to the stoppage of work and
because of which company might have to face big financial losses.
Earlier Jone has initiated as well as successfully completed the same project. Considering
the difference in culture as well as environment of Tanzania, Stein berg, is highly worried about
with the techniques which will be used by Jones for completing the project as well as producing
the result. Stein berg, have concerns regrading the effect of action taken by Jone on companies
project in Tanzania. As Jone has experience in context of implementing such type of
constructions therefore, he has been appointed as liaison. He has been provided with the different
roles as well as responsibilities (Peng and Wu, 2019). According to role assigned Jones need to
work closely with the authorities in Tanzania, villagers etc. Jon has been assigned with
responsibility to establish office in Tanzania and recruit employees.
The difficulties which is faced by Jone while performing his roles as well as
responsibilities during the dam project is mainly associated with developing the operating
structure and also in performing start up tasks such as obtaining licenses, performing recruitment
functions etc. In addition to this the most important issues which has been addressed in the case

study is issue of Tribal rituals. As many of the villagers perceives that Dam would displace
about 700 villagers. Such type of problem is required to be solved as soon as possible as it can
lead to the stoppage of work (Vickers, 2018.). It has been analyzed from the given case scenario
that, HG has facilitated negotiations with the Government in Tanzanian, an organization
assembled a resettlement package that included the renovation of school and health centers in the
new location, this strategy was effective up to a little extend only.
I believe that Jone need to develop the understanding about the Trompenaars cross
culture measure theory. As per the hypothesis, John is required to adopt the Neutral vs.
Emotional approach while negotiating with villages, as this tactic will assist him in gaining the
support of villagers which is very much essential in order to complete the dam project in
successful manner. In addition to this, use of emotional approach while facilitating negotiation
with villagers will also help Jone in eliminating the barriers which can occur in completion of the
project. In addition to this, Tiny Toomy face negotiation theory states that face is something that
is common across every culture. According to the face negotiation theory there are basically a
two type of cultures these are Individualist and Collection. Considering the different problems in
case study, I perceive that Jone can adopt the collective approach for dealing with different
issues during the project. In addition to this, Jone or HG company is required to facilitate
negotiation with the villagers and other stakeholders. I also think that Jone need to be very
careful in context of use of words while communicating as well as facilitating negotiation with
villagers. In addition to this, both jone and manager of HG company need to consider the
culture, environment and people behavior while making any important decision related to the
project. They also need to think thoroughly about the effect of their decisions on different
stakeholders., as this tactics will aid them in avoiding harmful consequences that could affect the
project as well as image of organization (Thomas and Peterson, 2017).
By analyzing the case study I found that the lack of communication with the villagers as
well as other stakeholders is the root cause of different problems which has emerged in the dam
project. I believe that majority of the issues in dam project can be resolved by ensuring an
effective communication as well as flow of information between different stakeholders. In
addition to this, an effective negotiation can also aid Jone in resolving various problems. I have
also noticed that in context of given case scenario that the organizational culture was dominated
by practices such as individualism where only the authorities had the right to make required

decisions. Individualism culture as per Hofstede's in his cultural dimensions, tends to bring
results which are not oriented towards success. In addition to this, it is not possible for an
individual to attain organizational success on his own. I have analyzed that language is the
major barriers which has given rise to the major issues in context of dam project. I have also
found that Jones hired African religions, who advised HG to work with the religious caretaker of
the falls to find a solution which I considered to be as one of the best tactics. I have also noticed
that there has been the conflicts related to the moving of spirituals (Barksby, Butcher and
Whysall, 2015.). The first ceremony was organized where goats, chicken and cow has been
sacrificed just for the fees of 7500 $. In such ceremony, John has not participated. In addition to
this, He has given more amount of money to repeat the ceremony, in which he took part,
evidently appeasing the spirits. All these incidences has lead to the negative publicity and it has
adverse influence on behavior of villagers. It has also been analyzed that many of the domestic
workers has complained related to disorganized structure and refinement of roles as well as
responsibilities. I perceive that In such situation it is required by Steinberg to facilitate
communication with workers and organize meeting at regular interval of time, as this tactic will
help Steinberg in identifying the problems faced by employees in performing their work during
the project (Boud, Keogh and Walker, 2018.). Considering the case study, it is very much
essential for Steinberg to clearly defined roles as well as responsibilities of an individual which
is very much crucial in order to ensure successful completion of the project.
I also perceive that for dealing with the different issues arises due to the difference in
culture, it is required by Jone as well as Steinberg to provide workers with an open
communication channel. In addition to this, management in an enterprise is required to provide
employees with crises cultural training, as this will provide them an ease in dealing with the
complex issues as well as situations.
CONCLUSION
It has been concluded from the study that an effective cross cultural management is very
much crucial for smooth functioning of business. From the above report it has been summarized
that cross cultural differences can be avoided by providing employees with an open
communication channel as well as an appropriate training. It has also been concluded that
Collective culture is more precise in achieving set growth and development for the organization

and had maintained better organizational efficiency. The other fact which has been found during
the study is that the verbal as well as non-verbal differences can give rise to conflicts as well as
confusion among people which can further have negative effect on the results of the project.
