INTRODUCTION
Learning is one of the most important and core parts of child’s growth and development.
It is extremely important to assess strengths of child, areas to be developed for understanding
ways in which a child can be made to learn new things or changes (Pieng & Okamoto, 2020).
This assessment is based upon a dramatized parent interview between Melissa Kemp & Chloe
Judd about a child Noah who is required different kinds of training for moving from kindergarten
to school and one of those is toilet training. In this assessment critique of dramatized parent
interview will be done and development of child centred assessment will be done.
MAIN BODY
Critique of dramatized parent interviews
The description of the child
Description of Noah throughout the interview had focused upon him being a creative,
social intelligent, fair child. He is an extremely confident child and loves to plan ahead and
organize himself. He loves exploring new things and always finds new things to play with. As
per the interviewee he is an extremely creative child and loves to dramatize like plays with
imaginary zombies etc. Discussion in interview further helped in identifying that Noah loves
reading books and loves to borrow new books for reading but is a but slow in his toilet training.
He is still required to learn a lot of things in terms of his toilet training. For this, Melissa did
suggest about educators providing education about toilet training, hygiene practices.
Strength based authentic assessment – philosophy and tools
During the interview it was clearly that they interviewer (Melissa) did gather all kinds of
qualitative data about current toilet training of Noah. For toilet training of Noah she was focusing
upon using strength based training and assessment method. She was trying to gather current
situation about toilet training of Noah by exploring his weaknesses, strengths. During this
interview Melissa was trying to gather likes, dislikes, strengths and weaknesses of Noah and was
further trying to give suggestions on ways in which they can help his mother in providing toilet
training to Noah such as getting educators for providing knowledge about use of toilet thought
the day.
Knowledge of the whole child, including emerging development/interests
On the basis of assessment, it was identified that Noah was a bit slow in learning thigs
about toilet training as compared to other students or children. In the interview following needs

of Noah were identified that can be used for provision of required training to Noah. Like Noah
loves to play and engaging in new activities. So, they can engage Noah in playing and while
playing he can be given on offer about whether he wants to use the toilet or not as children get
engage while playing. This can help in developing a habit of using toilet. Noah loves reading
books so he can be provided books about hygiene, toilet practices so that he can learn about these
practices in an appropriate manner.
Child focused learning proposal
Melissa provided various kinds of suggestions to Chloe for Noah that can help her and
support her in provision of toilet training to Noah. As Noah cannot handle changing situation as
expected by him. So, for this, he can be given with warning about change within current situation
like providing warning that it would be lunch time in 5 minutes so if he wants to use the Toilet
he can. As noah loves to play so he can be engaged in playing different games and in middle of
games he can be asked about whether he wants to use the toilet or not. This will help him in
developing a habit of using toilet.
Teachers role
During the interview, Melissa approved usage of strength- based approaches for Noah to learn
and develop new habits. Such as Noah loves borrowing books so he can be provided help in
finding books ion which he is interested in. He loves socializing and meeting new people and
simultaneously loves to play. For this, he can be engaged in playing with different kinds of
people. This was further explained with the help of Bronfenbrenner theory that helps in explain
behaviour of child when they are put in new environment. Noah gets a bit uncomfortable when
he is put at the centre of new people. So for this, he can be asked to play and interact with new
people. This will further him in socializing.
Shared vision (family connections)
Focus of Melissa during the interview was majorly on focus of Chloe on Noah. With the help of
Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligence. Melissa explains that as per this theory there are many
different ways a child learn and as Noah is quite strong mathematically, linguistically, visually
and musically. As per his interest, his learning style changes. As per this discussion various ways
for making Noah learn new things, adapt himself from change in environment from kindergarten
to school can be done in an appropriate manner.

NOAH
The description of the child
As Noah is an intelligent child who is cautious of learning and understanding along
with persistence of various good qualities. However, it’s one of the bad habit that include
toilet discipline and practice would be improved and corrected if that good caretaker or an
educator would be appointed. This would make further assisting the Noah to develop and
correct this bad habit. In the same way as Noah is smart enough that would make it easy for
it to develop good learning and habits so with the help of tutor or the carer the habit of
toilet discipline would be easy to develop. Being a small child and the age of development
it would be easy to mould and implement the good habits and changes among the children
so with a focus over the bad habit of the Noah along with consideration towards the
existing good habits would lead to make further improvement in Noah.
Since, Noah is eager to make participation in new activities that may include
playing and others so with the adoption of adequate practice that may include play based
learning the intelligence of Noah along with creation of awareness towards health and
hygiene would be easy to develop. In the same way as Noah is found of reading books so
through providing good books and material on health and hygiene importance the habit of
toilet discipline would be easy to develop among it. Although Noah shows resistance
towards changes but with effective understanding and learning this habit would be further
improved and corrected.
Teachers’ role
In order to make
development of good habits
and learning practices,
teachers play an important
role. (Crumpler, 2019) This is
because a child usually
spends more time in school
and get interacted with its
teachers so, teachers plays an
important role towards child
development and raising of
new learning and ideas. In the
same way as teachers are
most attached with child in
school so development of
good habits and making
correction of bad habits and
practices would directly have
associated with the teacher
and its role along with its
approach towards child.
Further, development of his
exploration to new things
could also be done for
identifying whether his
creativity and intelligence is
being enhanced or not.
Shared vision
One of the main shared
vision as per this
assessment would be to
develop and provide new
opportunities for Noah
that can be explored by
him for learning new
things, providing
opportunities to family
members of noah to guide
him during his learning.
Frequent discussion with
parents of Noah could be
done for evaluating his
progress so that further
shared plan for bringing
improvement within Noah
can be done. Along with
this, side by side feedback
from family members of
Noah can be taken for
identifying whether taken
initiatives are appropriate
or not.

Following assessment clearly helps in identifying that it is important to
aim on development of various habits within Noah so that he can be supported
this moving from kindergarten to school. He can be supported by providing
warning about any kind of change in situation prior to its occurrence such as
lunch break will be in 5 minutes, next class is reading class etc. Further,
educators could be hired for providing knowledge about usage of toilet in
different situations whole day, providing changes of borrowing books in which
Noah is interested in for developing habit of reading. In order to ensure that
Noah is enjoying his time in school and learning new things as well as
developing new habits time to time interaction with Noah can be done.
Strength based authentic assessment

activities, interests etc. using strength-
based approach simultaneously with
standard approaches (Wilson, 2018).
Adoption of this approach was clearly
visible in the interview as Melissa used

he loves to play so by engaging him in
playing and asking for toilet was
suggested as one of the main
approaches to be used for developing
habit of using toilet throughout the day.
Whereas standard practices were also
used such as by providing suggestion
about change in situation so that Noah
can easily adopt changes such as giving
warning about lunch break or period
change. This approach can directly
help Noah in developing important
habits so that he can easily adopt
changes while moving from
kindergarten to school
Knowledge of the whole child
On the basis of assessment, it
was identified Noah is quite a
creative an intelligent child. He
loves to play and can further
play imaginary games such as
playing with zombies, nurses
flying over house etc. Further,
he loves borrowing books and
reading. This assessment can
clearly help in identifying and
developing goals to achieved
as per his interested in things
and his leaning habits. In this
engagement of both educators
and families can be involved so
that needs of Noah for moving
to school from kindergarten
can be fulfilled. This way
Noah’s involvement in reading
can be increased, toilet usage
can be taught, hygiene habits
can be learnt, adapting oneself
with changing habits can be
done.

CONCLUSION
From the above assessment it can be concluded that there are many different ways that
help children to learn new things and develop new habits. For this it is extremely important to
identify ways in which strength and interest of children can be used for development of activities
and plan for development of new habits and interest as well as learning new things.
