PROJECT MANAGEMENT FOR HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS
1. Executive Summary
This project is based on the development and delivery of an education to the nurses who are
working in mental hospitals. It has been often seen that people who suffer from extreme
mental states commit suicide being unable to handle their mental pressure. This project
aims to deliver a suitable education program that will train the nurses handle mental patents
and also effectively use the Modified Suicide Risk Assessment Tool (MSRAT) for determining
whether the patient has suicidal tendency or not. The main attributes of the project that
need to be considered are as follows.
The main problem that will be addressed by the project is the frequent suicide of the
patients who are associated with the mental hospitals. Hence, the goal of this
project is to train and educate these nurses so that they handle the patients
effectively to reduce harm to the patients including suiciden.
The project idea was generated when an online report was published where it was
found the nurses in most mental hospitals are not trained enough to handle the
mental patients as well as the acute mental stress that occurs throughout the shift
hours of the nurses.
This project will deliver a training program for the nurses and will also promote the
use of the Modified Suicide Risk Assessment Tool (MSRAT) in acute mental settings.
The project will be sponsored by Australian Healthcare and Hospitals Association
who will also monitor the outcome of the project before funding for the future
projects.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT FOR HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS
2. Overview
This project emphasizes on the development of a suitable education program for these
nurses along with the development of the timeline, budget, risk analysis and others that are
integral parts of this project. Additionally, this project is also aimed to prepare a plan for
promoting the use of Modified Suicide Risk Assessment Tool (MSRAT) in the mental hospitals
for assessing the patients from time to time.
2.1. Project Title
Developing and delivering education Program to Nurses (Registered nurses, Enrolled nurses,
new graduate nurses and new staff) working in the acute mental health setting, to educate
and promote use of the modified suicide risk assessment tool (MSRAT).
2.2. Project Background
This project is based on the delivery of a suitable education program for the nurses who are
deployed in the mental hospitals for handling of the mentally sick patients. It has become a
very regular incident that the nurses get intense mental pressure during handling the
patients while also many patients commit suicide after ultimately failing to cope with the
mental stress. It has been identified that the reason for which these issues mainly arise due
to lack of proper education of the nurses regarding the handling of the mental patients.
These nurses are only formally trained for handling normal patients and then posted in
mental hospitals without any special training. These nurses do not have sufficient knowledge
of the MSRAT, a tool that can help to assess the mental states of the patients.
2.3. Project Problem Statement & Project Goal
The problem statement is as follows.
Many nurses deployed in mental hospitals do not have any special education regarding the
handling of the mental patients and with time, they get mentally stressed and on the other
hand, without proper supervision, the patients also harm themselves or even commit
suicide.
The goal of the project is to provide special education to the nurses for handling the mental
pressure at the hospitals and also promote the use of Modified Suicide Risk Assessment Tool
(MSRAT).
2.4. Objective(s)
The objectives of the project are as follows.
To develop an appropriate education program for the mental hospital nurses
To promote the use of Modified Suicide Risk Assessment Tool (MSRAT) for assessing
the conditions of the patients
To prepare the nurses to treat mental stress in a much effective way and prevent the
thought of suicide of the patients at any time

Scope & Time Management Plans
2.5. Outcome(s)
The outcomes of this project are listed as follows.
An appropriate education program for the nurses in mental hospital
A promotion plan for Modified Suicide Risk Assessment Tool (MSRAT)
A training program for special doctors who will assess the mental conditions of the
patients from time to time using the MSRAT
2.6. Output(s) (Deliverables)
The outputs of the project are as follows.
A framework for education program for the mental hospital nurses
A promotional plan for Modified Suicide Risk Assessment Tool (MSRAT)
A detailed schedule for training the nurses as per the plan
An education program in which the nurses will participate for training purposes.
A detailed report on the outcomes of the training and future monitoring plan.
2.7. Exclusions
Regular training module for nurses is excluded from the project
Recruitment policy regarding the appointment of the nurses is out of scope of this
project
Compensation for the nurses is excluded from the project
2.8. Assumptions and Constraints
2.8.1. Assumptions
It has been assumed that the training program will be sufficient to train the nurses in
handling extreme mental pressure
It has been assumed that the Modified Suicide Risk Assessment Tool (MSRAT) is
accurate in assessing the mental conditions of the patients
2.8.2. Constraints
Convincing all the mental hospitals around the world is a significant constraint in the
project
The ethical aspects are significant constraints in the project
Convincing the nurses to take part in the program is a significant constraint in the
project
3. Scope & Time Management Plans
3.1. Methodology of Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) and Activities
For developing the work breakdown structure of the project, waterfall methodology is
utilized. In this methodology, the activities are arranged one after another in the most
