INTRODUCTION
Human resources are an important asset of the firm so it is the responsibility of the
organization to manage all the people. This is related to the relationship between employee and
employer that it should be enhanced in order to improve overall performance of the company.
HR is the core functional unit of the firm that focuses on the motivation level of the staff
members (Morley, Heraty and Michailova, 2016). The manager also provide training and
development to their workers so that they will be able to offer quality services to their customers.
Through this people will be able to enhance their core competencies that help them in improving
their career. The present report is based on St-Margaret's Nursing Home which perform its
operations in health and social care. They are focusing on their human resource management so
that quality services can be given to customers. The below mentioned report is based on the
recruitment and selection of employees within the organization. Along with this, how legislative
laws can affect the performance of the firm in the country. Further, it explains that how training
and development programs can improve the performance of the employees. It also focuses on the
leadership styles that are used by the manager in order to improve the relations among all the
employees (Soltani, 2010).
TASK 1
1.1
St-Margaret's Nursing Home focuses on the recruitment and selection process so that
they will be able to get the experienced and qualified employees. Through this they will be able
to accomplish their goals and objectives. There are some factors that play an important role in
the recruitment process. Some of these factors are recruitment objectives, core objectives of
organization, organization personnel policies, government policies, cost of recruitment, Financial
implications (Sanyal and Sett, 2011). The manager of St-Margaret's Nursing Home focuses on
the recruitment process so that they will be able to provide quality services to their customers.
Through this process they will be able to improve their overall performance. Job profile should
be defined so that skilled employees can be hired and needs can be fulfilled of the health and
social care. Along with this, they have to hire the staff members that can help the firm in
attaining all their objectives and through this they will be able to get the success in the market.

The health and social care organization can recruit the employees from inside and outside
the organization. If they perform internal recruitment then through this they will be able to
increase the motivation level of their existing employees. They don't have to bear some extra cost
in this type of method and overall objectives can also be accomplished. On the other hand, if
they perform external recruitment then they have to use some activities like they can place a job
advertisement on the social sites, brochures and so on. Through this approach, new ideas can be
introduced in the firm and quality services can be given to all the customers. Some cost is
attached with this type of approach but through this they will be able to get skilled workers.
Furthermore, the organization have to follow the legislative laws that are made by the
government (Armstrong and Taylor, 2014). These rules and regulations play an important role
when the manager hire any employees. Companies can also sustain its competitive advantage in
the market as compare to other market players and their brand image is also get improved.

There are different types of legislative laws and policy framework of all countries across
the world that can influence the selection, recruitment and employment of people. The manager
of St-Margaret's Nursing Home has to follow all rules and regulations when they are going to
follow these recruitment process. The state government of UK made several laws in order to
improve the conditions of employees and these acts are employment rights act, equality act, sex
discrimination act and so on (Batt and Colvin, 2011). These rules and regulations are designed so
that no discrimination would take place on the basis of gender, religion, beliefs, color and so on.
Equality act: This act is made by the government so that everyone will be liable to get
equal pay as per their work. Through this they will be able to retain more employees within the
organization and motivation level is also get improved of all workers.
Sex discrimination act: This type of act protect the employees from any type of

the organization that can be related to the promotion, training and so on.
Employment act: This law protect all the rights of an employees in the organization.
Through this, the manager can provide a healthy and safety environment to their workers so that
a peaceful environment can be created (Guest, 2011).
The aim of health and social care organization should be related to their objectives so that
their overall performance can be improved. For this, they have to hire employees on the basis of

their knowledge, skills, experience and qualification. Along with these laws, every organization
have their own set of policies that can help them in reducing the turnover. These rules and
regulations describe their culture that they follow in the industry. Along with this, these laws also
avoid the unfairness and provide a peaceful environment to the people who are working in the
firm. Furthermore, they will be able to get the success in the market in an efficient manner so
that their brand image is also get improved at global level (Decker, Riley and Siemer, 2012).

The HR manager of St-Margaret's Nursing Home may use many different approaches so
that they will be able to select the best individuals. Some of these methods are:
Interview: This is the most appropriate method that is used by St-Margaret's Nursing
Home in order to hire the employees. These can be of two types one is face to face and another
one is telephonic interview. Face to face interview is most beneficial than telephonic because in
this they will be able to know about the behavior and expression of interviewee. The interviewer
will be able to take their decisions without any confusion and these kinds of interviews can be
taken by the panel or an individual (Cowling, 2013). Through this, the HR manager will be able
to hire the skilled and experienced workers.
Assessment center: This is an another approach that is used by the health and social care
organizations. These centers take interviews and test of the individual and group exercises can be
performed. On the basis of these, best candidate can be hired by St-Margaret's Nursing Home.
There are different methods that can be used by the firm such as psychometric test, IQ test,
hypothetical questioning test and so on ((Moideenkutty, Al-Lamki and Sree Rama Murthy,
2011)). The organization can use these approaches when they have many people for the same
job.
Audition: This is an another method that is used by the organization through this they
will be able to get the right kind of employee for the right job. The health and social centers can
use the concept of digitization in that videos and audios can be recorded.
St-Margaret's Nursing Home can use interview and assessment center approach in order
to get the skilled and experienced person (Daley, 2012). Through these, they will be able to
accomplish their overall objectives and care can be given to the customers. If quality staff is
hired in the firm then quality services can be offered to the people.

The manager of St-Margaret's Nursing Home should know about the group development
that how groups can be developed in the firm. He has to follow some theories so that relationship
among all the team members can be enhanced. It is important to communicate with each other in
a group than only overall performance can be improved (Agrawal, Khatri and Srinivasan, 2012).
On the basis of the theory of Tuckman's group interaction can be divided among some stages and
these are:
Forming: This is the first stage of group development in which different individuals
come together and make a group. In this, groups are totally depends upon their leaders who will
direct them that how to perform (Five Stage Model of Group Development. 2017). All people get
to know about each other at this stage.
Storming: This is the second stage in the group development where competition is high
and everyone will be able to know about their work that what they have to perform. At this stage
conflicts can be arise between all the members of the group (Renwick, Redman and Maguire,
2013). People work on the basis of their own styles and due to this the group will not be able to
perform well.
Norming: Here at this stage, group is moving towards the norming stage where all the
members perform according to the group so that overall goals can be achieved. All conflicts and
issues get resolved in this stage (Budhwar and Varma, 2010). Along with this, members place
their ideas in front of other members and through this performance of a group can be improved.
Performing: This is the more productive stage where all people perform well for their
group. Here, everyone will be able to know about each other very well and trust can also be
established among the group members. Along with this, a sense of belongingness is get
established and they all are focused on their goals.
Adjourning: This is the last stage of the group development where they completed their
task and all group members are moving in different directions after achieving the goals (Markova
and Ford, 2011). Opportunities is given to all members that they can share their views on this
group performance.

The manager can use different approaches that may help them in order to develop an
effective team work in St-Margaret's Nursing Home (Werner and DeSimone, 2011). There may
be different groups within the organization and these are:
Formal groups: These kinds of groups are created by the organization so that their
overall objectives can be achieved. The team have their leader who will assign the tasks to each
members so that they all will be able to know about their respective roles. These all members
move in a defined or set direction.
Informal groups: These groups are not created by the health and social care center as
these are self made. These are developed on the basis of the common needs and interest of the
people who are working in St-Margaret's Nursing Home (Gupta and Shaw, 2014). This kind of
group doesn't have any specified structure and these can be create between the employees of
different departments. These people may divers in the different different directions as per their
needs.

Work groups: These work groups are created so that quality services can be given to the
people. These are sub groups that are created under a large group so that overall performance of
a particular department can be improved (Niazi, 2011).
Multi disciplinary teams: In this a single team may have many key people who will

doctors in St-Margaret's Nursing Home and many nurses who will assist the doctors and take
care of the patients.
These groups help the health and social care center so that they will be able to improve
their growth in the market (Tymon, Stumpf and Doh, 2010). There should be transparency

direct the efforts of staff members and motivates them towards accomplishment of organization
aim and objectives (Saks, Haccoun and Belcourt, 2010). It can be stated that effective leadership
support the health care practitioners and nurses to deliver more satisfactory services to clients.
Along with this, leadership also supports care workers to carry out smooth flow of operations
and services in St-Margaret's Nursing Home. The practical application of different leadership
theories to health and social care workplace is mentioned below as:
 Rationale theory of leadership – This theory is generally used at the time of carrying out
certain changes in organization. Furthermore, the practical application this theory will

help St-Margaret's Nursing Home to implement certain changes and develop effective
process of communication which can help in smooth flow of health care practises.
 Contextual leadership is another effective theory which can be used St-Margaret's
Nursing Home for carrying out flow of health care practises (Iles, Chuai and Preece,
2010). As per this leadership theory, people working in St-Margaret's Nursing Home will
need to understand their key position in social care and develop a strong relationship with
the key stakeholders. However, it can be critically argued that contextual leadership is a
kind of traditional approach. The main and most important benefit associated with the use
of above mentioned leadership theory is that it will provide leaders in St-Margaret's
Nursing Home with an opportunity to see more clearly during situations such as issues
and complexities.
 The technical leadership theory focuses on enhancing the methods, philosophies and

St-Margaret's Nursing Home is required to adopt effective practices and policies which
can assist in managing appropriate working practices within the organization (Wilson, 2014).
One of the most effective strategies which can be adopted here is linked with trusting the
workers that they will be carrying out all assigned task and duties in the most effective manner.
Trusting staff members of St-Margaret's Nursing Home will result in creating a sense of
satisfaction among them and will also encourage them to give their best towards delivering
quality care to all patients. Along with this, working relationship can be also managed with the
help of strategies such as democratic style of leadership. Here, St-Margaret's Nursing Home can
encourage its staff members to present their views and opinions in the process of decision
making. The use of above mentioned style of leadership will develop satisfaction among workers
and will help in development of strong working relationship within the same. Along with this,

activities such as team meetings can be used for managing working relationship within the
organization provided in the case study (Bučiūnienė and Kazlauskaitė, 2012). St-Margaret's
Nursing Home will be required to ensure that team meetings and conferences are carried out at
regular intervals so that the issues faced by the workers can be discussed along with development
of the strategies which can be used to overcome the issues and conflicts. However, it can be
critically argued that at the time of carrying out discussion on weaknesses of staff members,
closed sessions can be used in order to deal with the weakness. This will create a sense of
satisfaction among workers and will also help them to overcome their weakness in more
appropriate manner.
4.3
In the present scenario, individuals in health care have started making use of various
reflective practises in order to achieve higher personal and professional growth. These practises
help people working in healthcare setting to become aware of the key areas which they are
lacking and which need to be improved (Van Vianen, Dalhoeven and De Pater, 2011). It can be
expressed that my own development has been influenced directly with the management and
leadership approach which has been adopted by my health care setting. The strategy of personal
evaluation has supported me to find out my key strengths and weakness. On the basis of
information collected, I have been able to develop effective strategies which I have used to
maintain my own strengths and overcome my key weaknesses. Along with this, I have also used
different types of learning practises to enhance my knowledge base and skill set. This has
supported me to find out more potential professional growth opportunities in my health and
social care organization. The leadership and management approaches adopted by the
organization have encouraged me to place more efforts in terms of communicating and
coordinating with others. It has supported me in getting aware of the importance of effective
communication within health and social care. At the time of working within St-Margaret's
Nursing Home, the management and leadership approach has encouraged me to work in team
and attain the objectives of organization. After working for such a long time, I have personally
observed that the best practise which can be used is task allocation. The organizations in health
and social care can make use of the above mentioned practises and allocate the tasks to each and
every person separately (CG Davidson, McPhail and Barry, 2011). This will help in making
them well aware of the objectives and task which they need to accomplish.

CONCLUSION
From the above mentioned report it has been concluded that human resource management
is necessary in the organisation. On the basis of this, the manager will be able to hire a skilled
and experienced person that will help the firm in achieving their specified goals. They can also
use some strategies that will enhance the team work in the health and social care centre. There
are some legislative laws that have to be followed by the industries so that smooth functioning
can be ensured. The manager can use feedback and incentives approaches in order to promote the
development of individuals. St-Margaret's Nursing Home can use different leadership styles in
order to lead the enterprise towards success. Furthermore, workers relationship can also be
improved on the basis of these approaches.
