INTRODUCTION
Hospitality refers to the relation which is created between a guest and a host (Chan and
Hsu, 2016). The industry which deals with it is known as hospitality industry. In this report, a
detailed analysis will be made on hospitality industry in U.K. and the way it operates serving its
various customers and clients.
TASK 1
P1: Businesses in hospitality industry
There are various types of businesses in the hospitality industry of United Kingdom.
These businesses are as explained as follows-
 Lodging-Accommodation- In this, lodging and accommodation arrangement is provided
for the client (Jones, Hillier and Comfort, 2016). This is mainly provided by hotels,
resorts, guest houses etc. For example- There are different types of hotels providing
services ranging from lodging to other allied services like recreation.
 Food and Beverage- In it, there are restaurants and other eateries providing food and
beverage to the clients by serving them effectively. For example- Restaurants of all
ranges can be included in this section which provides fine dining experience as well as
take-away also.
 Travel and Tourism- Travel and Tourism are another core business within the
hospitality industry. In it, clients are served by travel agencies by arranging their travel to
any part of the world where they want to go to. Example is Travel Agencies which make
arrangements for people to travel according to their requirements.
 Entertainment Industry- Entertainment industry is also a core business in the
hospitality industry. For example- Cinema Halls, Clubs etc.
 Timeshare- It is an emerging sector in the hospitality industry. In it, people take the right
of owning a place for a particular period of time during a year. Examples of it can be
Convention Centers and Villas and Resorts.
P2: Operational and functional departments
There are different departments in a hotel which serve to the varied needs of guests.
These are as follows-
 Housekeeping department- In this department, care is taken of the various issues related
to hospitality in a hotel (Departments of Hotel, 2017). It deals with cleaning and
maintenance of rooms of the guests and providing them with fresh linens. The staff of
this department also takes care of the design and decor of the bedroom of the guest.

 Food and Beverage department- This department deals with preparation of food of
various cuisines to be served to the guests. Also beverage is served to them in different
forms. There is a restaurant present in all major hotels and this department takes charge
of it to provide good services to the clients.
 Front Office Department- This department deals with providing of information to the
guests as per their requirements. It is their job to provide facility of check-in and check-
out to the guests. Also the specific queries and issues of the guests are dealt by this
department effectively and efficiently. The managers should ensure that the clients do not
face any problem during their stay at the hotel which is so important in order to receive a
positive review and feedback. Therefore, multiple functions are provided by the staff so
that operations in the hotel run smoothly.
P3: Contribution of hospitality industry
The hospitality industry has been a major contributor in the economy of U.K. It
contributes at the following levels-
 Local level- The hospitality industry is a major contributor at the local level in U.K. as it
provides employment to a lot of people in the country (Kotler and et.al., 2017). It has
boosted the employment figures and has helped in sorting out the unemployment problem
of the nation. Different types of jobs are provided in this industry on the basis of
qualifications and skills of the person concerned.
 National level- The hospitality industry contributes at a national level in U.K. It does so
by contributing to the GDP growth and economy of the country. By boosting up the
services sector and increasing the overall national income it makes a significant
contribution towards higher economic growth.
 International level- The hospitality industry has boosted up the image of U.K. at the
international level as it has provided efficient services to the guests who arrive at various
hotels, resorts for purposes like tourism, leisure and business purposes. Thus it has helped
a lot in increasing the goodwill of the country as a major travel destination for various
tourists which has led to an increase in the number of tourists. Therefore the income from
tourism in the country has also seen as substantial increase.
P4: Operational roles in hospitality industry
There are different types of operational roles within the hospitality industry. These roles
are as follows-
 Casino Property General Manager- In this role, the task is to manage the operations of
the entire casino and ensure that everything goes on smoothly in the casino. This role
depends upon the overall efficiency and effectiveness level of the manager as effective
planning of operations of the casino is required in order to make sure that everything goes
on smoothly without any problems.

 Hotel manager- A hotel manager is in charge of the entire operations of the hotel. In this
role, it is needed to ensure that the functioning of the hotel goes on smoothly. A hotel
manager also needs to listen to the grievances and problems of the clients and solve them
effectively and efficiently.
 Event Coordinator- An event coordinator is the one who has the task of coordinating
and managing the different types of events (Pirani and Arafat, 2016). This has to be done
as per the needs and requirements of the clients.
 Head of housekeeping- The head of housekeeping is in charge of the entire
housekeeping department. The job here is to ensure that the housekeeping department is
serving the guests effectively without any issues. Therefore, the job here is to make sure
that the housekeeping operations go on smoothly in the hotel without any issues.
P5: Skills required for roles in the hospitality sector
The skills which are required in the different types of role in hospitality sector as follows-
 Customer service skills- It is important to deal effectively with the customers in the
hospitality sector. In businesses like hotels, resorts etc. customers are everything as many
things depend upon them. Therefore it is necessary that these skills are present in a
candidate aspiring to work in this industry.
 Cultural awareness- There are different types of cultures around the world and thus it is
necessary to show the required awareness for them. It is important because by showing
cultural awareness the candidate can get a decent job within this sector easily.
 Communication skills- These skills are necessary because these skills ensure that there
is no gap in communicating with the person intended (Pizam, Shapoval and Ellis, 2016).
It is important in the hospitality sector because a candidate here would be required to
communicate in different languages with different types of customers and clients and thus
these skills need to be displayed by the candidate.
 Work Ethics- Work ethics are needed while working in the hospitality sector because
using these ethics will ensure that ethical code of conduct is followed while dealing with
the varied customers and clients in the businesses of the industry. Thus a candidate needs
to ensure display of work ethics to get a job in this industry.
CONCLUSION
From the above report, it can be concluded that hospitality industry contributes a lot to
the overall development in a country. There are different types of businesses in it, operational
and functional departments are present in its businesses, and it makes a contribution in the
economy. Also, there are various types of operational roles and there are different types of skills
required for them.
