INTRODUCTION
Human resource management is referred as the approach which is implemented by the
organisation to manage employee and their performance for attaining organisational defined
goals and objectives efficiently and gain various competitive advantages. It is defined as the
process that includes various activities such as recruiting employee, managing their performance,
provides training regarding work to perform efficiently and offer appropriate compensation and
career development opportunities that help to motivate employees for achieving high work
performance. There are HRM department is formulated that facilitates the business to enhance
employee performance and retain them with organisation for long period of time. HR managers
of organisation plays important role in developing various organisational and employee policies
and strategy for ensuring effective and efficient organisational working. Managers examine
various internal as well as external business factors than develop effective planning after
considering all factors properly. There are various laws and legislations are formulated by the
government that must be included by the organisation in business practices to protect employees
and create effective employee relation among employee and employer (Analoui, 2017). In this
report the chosen organisation is Sainsbury that is second largest supermarket chain of United
Kingdom. The organisation is established in 1869 and founder is John James Sainsbury and the
headquarter is situated in London, England, UK. Organisation provides it products and services
in various counties. The report consists various roles and functions of human resource
management, recruitment as well as selection strategies that maintains organisational
performance are being discussed. Approaches of talent management and organisational system
and procedure is mentioned in this report that help business to attain organisational goals and
objectives efficiently.
TASK
Role of the HR function within an organisational
There are human resource management department is formulated by the organisation that is
responsible for motivating and managing employee performance properly. In the department HR
managers perform various functions that facilitates Sainsbury by enhancing employee
engagement and working performance in order to gain organisational defined objectives
efficiently (Botter, Rosa and Lima, 2018). HR managers are responsible for performing various

functions such as recruiting suitable employee, developed appropriate compensation structure,
policies and strategies for workplace and provides training as well as development opportunities
in order to motivate them and retaining with organisation. Roles and functions of HRM
department are mentioned below:
Staffing: Staffing is most important function of every organisation that ensure that
suitable employees are selected who perform organisation functions efficiently and help
Sainsbury to attain goals in well-defined manner. HR managers are liable for recruiting
appropriate employee at right time on right place (Cross and Dundon, 2019). There are proper
recruitment process and policies are formulated by the Sainsbury to find most suitable candidate
for filling vacant position of organisation. In staffing process various activities are included that
are defined below:
Develop plan for staffing: HRM department of Sainsbury develop effective policies and
strategies for organisation recruitment and staffing that guide and lead the organisation
to hire potential employees within defined budget of staffing. The plans included various
information about organisational vacant positions, its requirements and responsibilities
as well.
Develop policies to increase multiculturism at work place: Sainsbury helps their
employees to adopt multiculturism in business activities that facilitates the respective
organisation to manage employees who come from different backgrounds and cultures
and move them together to perform organisational functions (Hughes, 2018). The
policies are formulated to guide organisation as well as employees to accomplish defined
work in appropriate manner.
Recruitment: recruitment is the important part of staffing process in which HR managers
of Sainsbury find suitable candidate for right job position who have defined skills and
capabilities to perform specific task in efficient manner.
Selection: In the process of selection, Sainsbury take interview of all qualifies candidates
as well as select them on the bases of their knowledge and qualification. After selection
organisation provide them training and career development and motivates them to
perform defined task appropriately.
Develop workplace policies: HRM department of Sainsbury creates various effective as
well as fair organisational plans and policies that contains all information about organisation
