This report will explain the different approaches of human resource development for
siansbury. As sainsbury is one of the biggest chain of supermarket in UK. HRD is the process
of increasing the skills, capabilities and knowledge of all employees. This report will describe
two main approaches which are following by sainsbury such as Human capital appraisal and
Integrative framework. Apart from this it also explains the importance of equality and
diversity in cited corporation. Furthermore, this report also describes Performance appraisal
approach and Sociocultural approach to managing diversity and equality. This report also
explains the impact of internal and external factors on approaches and business. It describes
the impact of economic, political, social and environment factors on cited organisation.

Sainsbury is one of the most famous chain of supermarket in UK. Cited organisation
used different approaches to improve their brand image and productivity on regular basis.
HRD plays a hug role in the success of sainsbury.
HUMAN RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT: HRD is a set of systematic and planned
activities designed by corporation to provide different and new skills to their employees to
enhance their performance. Cited company focused on HRD to improve the performance of
their workers(Armstrong and Taylor, 2014). Aprat from these employees of cited company
are able to learn new skills and techniques from human resource development. In mentioned
company HRD is the process of increasing the skills, capabilities and knowledge of all
employees. Human resource development is a framework which used in an organisation to
develop personal and organizational skills and abilities in employees.
The main purpose of human resource development is to motivate the workers. HRD
includes various opportunities such as employee training, employee career development,
performance management, guiding, mentoring etc(Chelladurai and Kerwin, 2017).
Sainsbury used different approaches to human resource development which are as
follows:
Human capital appraisal approach: it is an approach to employee staffing that see
people as human capital whose future value can be increased through investment.
Organizational capabilities and HRD practices are the main element of this approach(Gomez-
Mejia and et.al., 2013). This approach plays main role in sainsbury to achieve the success.

This approach provides simple and specific path for HR practice. The main aim of HRD is to
improve the skills and knowledge of employees. As workers are main element of corporation
or we can say that employees are backbone of an organisation. All productivity of business is
depends on workers and their performance. According to this approach there are five stages
in management of human capital. They are classification stage, assessment stage, design
stage, implementation stage and monitoring stage. Apart from this according to this approach
there are five areas of human capital management which are as follows:
1. Recruitment: it is one of the key purpose of HR as employees are required by the firm
on regular basis. In this context, sainsbury supermarket conducts both the internal and
external recruitment by considering the need of workers so that they can manage and
achieve their goals and target in desired manner. Apart from this cited company
following the five stage selection practice for middle level employees. This step
includes, preliminary interviews, written test, intellectual test, HR
Level interview and final interview(Shields and et.al., 2015.). So mentioned company hire the
skilled and highly qualified employees to improve its business.
2. Reward and performance management: to improve the human resource development
this process is used by cited company. HR of sainsbury supermarket aims to offer
reward and recognition to workers so that they can feel motivated. In this context,
manager of cited company determine the performance of individual on regular basis
and offer the reward which is based on their performance and extra efforts.
Motivation plays main role in the human resource development, by providing reward
system manager can improve skills and knowledge of employees on regular basis.
3. Career development: this is self- initiated process which provided by manager of the
corporation.

Integrative framework: This is most important approach which is used in cited organisation
for develop the skills and knowledge of their employees.
This approach emphasis on focusing the entire human resource development system
in sainsbury company. This approach focused on the building organisational capabilities,
improving employee satisfaction level and shaping customers. All these three factors play
crucial role in the success of business.
EMPLOYEE SATISFACTION: cited company used different ways to satisfy their
employees(Knowles and et.al.,2014. ). They used trainings and development, reward system
and other activities to satisfy and motivate their workers. Worker's satisfaction is very
necessary for sainsbury because all productivity and benefits of business are based on their
performance.
Cited company used two important ways to satisfy their workers which are as follows:
 Training and development: it is required to offer training and development
opportunities to employees so that they can perform well. In this context, sainsbury
provides trainings to employees on regular basis in order to raise their ability.
Moreover, cited company is able to rise the career opportunities of employees by
offering them development trainings(Budhwar and Debrah, 2013). Workers are able
to share their skills and knowledge with each other by trainings and development.
Apart from this, sainsbury offers different social and culture activities to their
employees to improve their satisfaction level. Workers of cited company participating
in different activities and enjoying their work this process will increase the business
of sainsbury.
Both Human capital appraisal and Integrative framework approaches are following by
the sainsbury supermarket to improve the human resource development. These approaches
plays a huge role in the success of sainsbury. By these approaches cited company is able to
develop skills and knowledge in their employees. Workers are able to raise their performance
and providing the extra efforts to organisation.

diversity in the workplace
EQUALITY:Equality and diversity is two different elements of an organisation.
Equality in corporation means that all workers are treated equally and none are discriminated
against.
DIVERSITY: diversity means that company actively welcomes people form a variety
of backgrounds. Diversity is about creating a culture which values individual differences and
corporation. Some of the key benefits of diversity management in sainsbury includes

of the community. Cited company has a better understanding of market segments and they
are able to attain consumer behaviour.
Sainsbury used different approaches to manage equality and diversity in the
workplace. Cited company used mostly Performance appraisal, sociocultural and capabilities
approach to manage equality and diversity(Sparrow and et.al.,2016). Diversity management
and equal opportunities are two different terms. Equal opportunity is related with tolerant,
right based and mainly focused on the women rights. On the other hand diversity
management requires a culture.
Performance appraisal approach to managing diversity and equality: performance
appraisal is conducted in sainsbury to enhance employees and organization performance with
employee motivation. Equality can be achieved and manage when firm conduct culture and
management system in systematic manner. In this approach cited organisation classified
employees on the basis of their performance and extra efforts. They ranked employees, and
also focused on weak employees to generate equality in business environment. To enhance
the performance of employees manager of cited company makes different
plans(Aswathappa,2013.). Manager used 360 feedback system to analysis the performance of
workers. Supervisor determines the techniques and skills of each employee after the
examination he collect all the information and dates about the employee's performance. After
that manager rank the employees according to their performance and extra efforts. Cited
company provides reward system for employees to motivate them. Sainsbury offering
trainings and development for employees who are not able to communicate properly. By this
process cited organisation is able to maintain the equality in business environment.

They provide different trainings and seminars for their weak employees to improve
their skills and knowledge. Organisation faced higher turnover rate when their workers feels
that their ratings are manipulated.
So to maintain the equality in business, the manager and supervisor of cited company
determine the whole performance of employees. Manager also examine the extra efforts of
workers and provide rating system and Manger rated employees without any partiality. By
this approach all employees feel motivated and happy with their job conditions. And this
approach also used to solve the high turn over problem.
Sociocultural approach: cultural diversity becomes a key feature of cited organisation.
Human resource management is set of function and activities which are focused on the
direction, controlling and maintaining firm and is affected by cultural and social issues.

maintain the equality among all employees, cited company offering work according to the

mentioned organisation to improve its business and productivity in effective manner.
Advantageous of human capital approach: as this approach includes and focused
on the various functions which are done by the HR manager. This approach focused on
mainly recruitment, monitoring, reward and performance management. All these factors are

plays huge role in the success of sainsbury(Cooke and et.al., 2014.). By this approach cited
organisation is able to hire best and skilled employee for organisation.

regular basis. They used different approaches to maintain their benefits and margins.

internal factors basically includes the inner strength and weakness. Strength has a positive
impact on a business whereas weakness have negative impact on the business of an

 Employee strengths: the strength of employees is crucial internal business factor.
Motivated, hard working, and skilled employees generally produce the best outcomes
than unmotivated, less-talented employees. In sainsbury, employees not only have
talent, but they work well together and collaborate ideas and resolutions. If there is
communication gape occur between employer and employee than it will affect the
productivity of business in negative manner.
To solve this problem manager and leader of cited company has to build good
communication relation with all employees. When there is good relation between employer
and workers than employees can share their issues and problem frankly with manager.
 Organizational direction: leadership plays main role in the business. Leadership is
process to direct and motivate the employees in desire manner. Improper leadership
affects the approaches of human resource development.
Cited company has to focused on the leadership style. They should use different
leadership styles and approaches such as situational, system and contingency leadership. All
these leadership styles will help sainsbury to improve their leadership styles and this process
also help to enhance the performance of employees(Herin, 2013.).
External factors that impact the business and approaches of sainsbury: cited company
has not much control on the external factors. These factors affect approaches and business of
cited organisation. External factors include social, legal, technology, political and economic
factors(Kavanagh, 2017.).

Eternal competition: one of the most critical external business factor is competition.
Tesco and asda are the most famous competitor of sainsbury. These companies decrease the
customer loyalty of sainsbury.
 Political factor: the political factor in the UK have great influence on the performance
of sainsbury. Currently consumer debates are very high in UK. This impact the
approaches of sainsbury and business conditions experiences great pressure.
 Economic factor: this factor plays a big role in any industry. This factor affect
demands, costs, price and benefits of business. Growing unemployment and deflation
in food price are the two important elements of economic factor that affect sainsbury
significantly(Joseph, 2014). Sudden changes in the economy and high tax rates also
affect the business of sainsbury. High tax rates decrease the margin of sainsbury.
To overcome this problem sainsbury should bring new techniques and product to
attract the customers.
 Technology factor: advance technology also affect the business of sainsbury. As tesco
and other competitors brings new technologies in their business to attract the
customers. As customers go with new products and technology. So to over come this
problem cited company has to focus on the new technologies. New technologies will
improve the business effective manner.
 Environmental factor: there has been a great pressure on sainsbury to keep
environment safe. An organisation impact the environment in both direct and indirect
ways. To resolve this problem sainsbury following 'reduce, reuse, recycle' approach
that effectively manage waste products. By this approach cited company providing
products according to customer needs and desire.
 Legislative factor: the government legislation and policies have a direct impact on the
performance of sainsbury.
Apart from these barriers of entry, threats of substitutes, power of buyers, power of
seller also affect the approach and business of sainsbury.
CONCLUSION
From the above report it has been concluded that different approaches plays huge role
in the success of business. Approaches help to improve the human resource development

factor in an organisation. This report focused on the importance and roles of approaches in
sansbury. Apart from this it also explained the roles of equality and diversity in sainsbury.
Apart from this it also explained the main function of human resource development. This
report also focused the impact of social, economic, legal and technology factor on the
