INTRODUCTION
Human resource management is defined as the function of recruitment, selection,
orientation, induction, performance appraisal and so on in compliance with labour laws. It plays
an important role in maintaining employee relation and motivation as well. The main objective
of human resource department is to hire the best and effective candidate for the company who
has the capability to perform activities in a proper manner (Bailey, Kelliher and Garavan, 2018).
It also provide training and development session to the staff members that has positive influence
on productivity and profitability of the company. For the present report, Sainsbury’s is taken into
consideration. It is the second largest multinational retailer in United Kingdom. The company
has presence in more than 15 countries and have around 12,000 employees. It was founded in the
year 1869 and its head office is located in London, UK. The report consist of two parts as in the
first part scope, purpose as well as functions of human resource management. Along with this,
the report will cover different approaches of recruitment & selection with its strength as well as
weaknesses. Moreover, Various HRM practices along with its influence on productivity and
performance is described properly. Furthermore, employee relation and its benefits to both
employee and employer is cover in the report. In the second part, applications of Human
resource management practices is elaborated properly in the report.

Explanation of purpose & functions of Human Resource management in context to resourcing
and workforce planning of an organization.
Human resource Management is formally notified as HRM, it is a fundamental
organizational practice that is undertaken for fulfilling the workforce needs of the entity by
hiring, recruiting, doing and managing the people who are working in the company. Human
Resource Department of the entity are responsible for several tasks such as creating policies,
putting them into effect and controlling and governing them in accordance to manage the people
efficiently. The Human Resource Department of Sainsbury like every other company's
department perform multiple roles with separate purposes and functions. Thus, role, function and
purposes of HRM of Sainsbury are elaborated underneath which are applicable to workforce
planning and resources in the company.
Role of HRM:

Building diverse teams- Diversity in workplace is a very common aspect nowadays
which creates and increases the competitiveness of the organisation. Diverse teams
several experts holds different point of views are inspired by their experiences and
inspirations. This time the Human Resource Department place an important role of
bringing people together by developing synergy among their mentality and viewpoints.
The HRM department of Sainsbury is responsible for overseeing the recruitment process
for building the diverse teams for the company and specifically works to develop a
mixture of different personalities rather than number of women and men in management.
Developing and retaining talents- The modern era of business and practices is evolving
and it turns out that organisations like Sainsbury are significantly dependent upon the
quality of their employees and their performances (Banfield, Kay and Royles, 2018).
Huge amount of money is invested in development of workforce as well as a lot of time
is spend as well in the similar activity. Very common purpose behind the same is true to
increase the ability is of individuals and build a competitive advantage through it for the
firm. Therefore, HRM is responsible for development of employees and their role is to
identify the best development opportunities for employees that keep them motivated and
loyal towards the organization allowing them to stay for the longer period in the
company.
Functions of HRM:
The functions of human resource management are classified in three following categories which
are mentioned below:
Managerial function- Under the function of HRM the team of Sainsbury has multiple
roles which they play and focuses on certain aspects. The respective managerial functions
that are performed by human resource team are planning, organizing, directing and
controlling.
Purpose: The sole purpose of managerial function of HRM unit of Sainsbury is
determining the needs of organisation and fulfilling then according to the expectations
and requirements by planning, organising and directing the actions of individuals in
favour of companies mission and vision.
