Introduction
The aim of this research essay is to portray the social issue of gender inequality in the
workplace and its advocacy. The existing organizational culture is all about diversity and
equality. However, there are numerous reports of gender discrimination and inequality. The
statistics and reports differ from the popular ‘equality’ culture (Stryker, 2018). The objective of
this paper is discussing the background of this social issue and the violation. Furthermore,
advocacy on the issue and protection of rights will be illustrated. The essay will also portray
several examples of the social issue along with its human right violation and advocacy.
Background of the Social Issue
Any problem or issue that impact the lives of a great number of people in a society can be
termed as a social issue (Rappaport, 2006). Gender inequality in the workplace is a common
issue that plagues society. The world seems to have developed and changes its perspective
towards the women as leaders, but there are several cases where gender is still an issue and
women are looked as inferior beings. Women as a successful leader or in a position of command
are not taken positively by many. It simply means that women are not given fair opportunities. It
is also reported by (McLaughlin, Uggen & Blackstone, 2012) that women are psychologically
more disturbed by discrimination than men. This happens especially in HR practices where all
the important functions take place such as policy-making, decision-making, etc. It has a great
influence on the training, hiring, promotions, and other important aspects of the job (Bobbitt-

Zeher, 2011). The entire organizational culture and policies are formulated as such that women
are treated unequally. In fact, the decision-making process is often gender-biased. This portrays
the organization as sexist and hostile. The companies should promote diversity and equality and
not the opposite (Hing, 2015).
At present, women continue to face discrimination at work. They do not get selected for
their skills. Moreover, the promotion of a woman is always looked upon as suspicious. A woman
who is in a high-power position is not liked by many and men often feel it derogatory to follow
orders of a female. The history of prejudice is prevailing till now and as a result gender
inequality in the workplace becomes a social issue. Today, women are educated and they excel
in their areas, but the inequality impacts productivity and performance. Moreover, Borrel et. al.,
(2010) stated that workplace discrimination impacts job satisfaction and employee engagement,
especially in case of a woman. The community is a mix of people that hold different opinions
regarding gender equality and thus people who favor women being equal to men view this as a
huge problem. Human rights are equal for all and women are entitled to have the same wages for
equal position as men, but it is not the case. The inequality affects people who consider gender
equality as empowerment of a section of the society or a nation. All around the world, there are
female leaders, businesswoman, actresses, politicians, and more. They are setting an example for
the rest of the women (Santovec, 2010). It is not impossible to achieve the desired goals and
thus if inequality is witnessed it impacts the people who hope for achieving something. Society
forms a perception that women can never be as successful as men because they will never be
treated equally. Hence, it affects the societies and communities on a great scale and the
socioeconomic status of the women is also lowered (Hing, 2015).
