KNOWLEDGE ASSESSMENT
1.1 a Need to report abuse and negligence
Firstly, there is requirement to have specific professionals who have reasonable grounds to
suspect a child is at a risk of harm as per the New South Wales. Mandatory reporters include:
social workers, child care providers, teachers, physicians and other healthcare workers who are
responsible to report child abuse. It needs to be reported immediately if responsible person
suspect children as they are suffering from abuse and harm. Other than this, by using online
reporting system, anyone can report when they suspect child.
1.1 b Non-invasive questions and types of questions when communicating with children and
young people
In regard to non-invasive questions, it can be said that it refers those questions that are not pushy
and are one-ended. such questions are being asked in child and healthcare as such questions
ensure healthcare providers that child keep talking to them. It increases trust and lead to long
term meaningful communication in the long run. Some non-invasive questions that can be asked
from children include:
What happened?
Who was there?
How did it make you feel?
How often does it happen?
Please tell me your relationship with your parents and teachers?
What makes you feel good?
What makes you feel sad and depressive?
Why do not you engage in social activities?
1.2 Ways of responding direct disclosure of sexual abuse
If a child reveals abuse, then they need to listen to child carefully in order to understand the
situation. Children care providers need to allow them to share their views openly by creating
such environment. It is also important for children care providers to make child feel safe and let
them know that they have done the right thing by sharing, making them sure that they are safe
and you will take this seriously. Being calm in such situations is important and let child tell the
story freely is the best way to deal with direct disclosure.
