2. Rationale
2.1 Problem domain
The paper showcases on the importance of IoT in farming. It is found that presently the
farmers do have an automated system with the help of which they can track the livestock’s and
the crops and as a result wastage in the farm is quite high that lowers the productivity and further
the earnings of the farmers get reduced. The irrigation method that is used is generally done
manually by the farmers and as result equivalent and proper irrigation is not done in the fields
that further damage the crops. For resolving this specific issue, it is decided to focus on smart
farming that is based on IoT.
2.2 Purpose and justification for the topic
The internet of things is selected for faming as it is a capital intensive as well as hi-tech
system that helps in growing food on a very much sustainable way. It is found that smart farming
that is based on the IoT based technology mainly helps in enabling the farmers and the growers
to minimize the waste and increase the productivity. The smart farming system is mainly
developed for successfully monitoring the farmlands that yield crops by using proper sensors and

then mechanizing the entire irrigation system. Moreover, the farmers can be able to monitor the
entire field conditions from anywhere and thus it is considered as one of the efficient approaches
of farming.

Yes, the supervisor approved the topic as IoT based farming is a significant technique
that will be beneficial in monitoring the crops as well as farm livestock’s by using proper sensors
which would be considered quite beneficial.
4. Research Questions
 How smart farming system helps in resolving the problems that are faced by the farmers?
 What are the advantages of smart farming which is dependent on IoT technology?
 How the farming system is beneficial in successfully monitoring the farmlands and the
livestock’s?
5. Conceptual or theoretical framework
It is stated by Pan et al. (2016) that IoT has appropriate capability of influencing the
world due to advanced industries as well as connected devices. However, after the application of
technology like IoT within the agriculture industry that generally have the greatest impact.
According to Agrawal et al. (2016), that the entire population of the world is setting to touch
around 9.6 billion in the year 2050 and therefore feeding thins much of population is a challenge
and therefore it is important that farming industry must embrace IoT. There are a number of
issues including extreme weather as well as change within the climatic conditions can get
resolved.
