INTRODUCTIONManagement and operation is an area which is concerned with manufacturing andoperational activities of goods and services. It is concerned with controlling and management ofsupply chain in market (Newman and et.al, 2014). Present study is based on operational andmanagement activities of Marks & Spencer, a retail company that sells clothing and accessories.This organization deals with wide varieties of products which includes clothing, food andfurniture manufacturing. This report will emphasis on the role of leaders and managers. Thisstudy will focus on the functions of manager and role of leader. It will also throw some light onleadership approaches. Further it will provide important aspects of management and operation.TASK 11. Introduce organisation and management structureM&S is a big multinational retailer who produces large range of items. These includeswide range of eatables and clothing, gifts, home furnishing items etc. Marks and Spencer is abiggest retailer of United Kingdom and it have also established nearly 300 stores in differentplaces of world (Nowicka and Vertovec, 2014). It is also considered as one of the most frequentand expanding company in the world. This entity uses flat organizational structure as it promotesequality among staff members. This structure also involve the employees in decision makingprocess in order to get innovative ideas of individual workers.2 Define and compare the different roles and characteristics of a leader and a managerManagers are those people who manages and controls various coordinating andcontrolling activities of the company. Leaders are those people who motivates and inspiresworkforce to get the desired quality of output (Antony, 2014). They are an important part ofM&S management as they are responsible for making and implementing decisions by guidingand training employees. Roles and characteristicsManagersLeadersAimManagers of M&S are aimedat achieving the overallorganizational objectives.Leaders only focus in creatingteam goals and targets. Theyare aimed at achieving theeffective team performance.1

Takes part inbalancing the economic factorsof the company. Basically theytake risk.Theyconcentrateinminimizing the risks (Stewartand Shamdasani, 2014).RelationshipManagers believe inmaintaining the overallrelationship of organizationalbehaviour.Leadersestablishescommunication and improvesthe interpersonal relationshipof employees.KnowledgeThey possess managingability. They only requirecommunication ability oftranslating higher managementstrategies to lower levelmanagement.(Fernie andSparks, 2014).Theyrequirehighcommunication abilities asthey motivate and encourageemployees by applyingappropriate leadership style. 2
