INTRODUCTION
Operational management is a related to management of various operation activities such
as concerned with conversation of raw material into goods and services for maximizing profit
margin of the company. Marks and Spencer is a British retailer that operates its business across
various nation and is specialized in selling qualitative clothing, home and food products to its
customers. Different roles and characteristics played by leader and manager to influence
employees for achievement of Marks and Spencer objectives. Different models, theories and
approach such as situational, system and contingency leadership used by leader of company to
motivate employees to increases its productivity and performance. Leadership refers to process
where person that guide and influence other people to perform specific task and activities in
particular manner. Leaders play an important role in influencing its followers and guiding them
direction to perform various activities. Therefore, this report explains about importance of
operational management in achieving company objectives. Various role, characteristics and
function of manager and leader in different situation that helps in growth and survive of business
in the environment . At last, it analyses various environmental factors that impact upon
operational management and decision- making by manger and leader.
TASK 1
Different roles and characteristics of leader and manager in motivating employees performance
Leader and manager have different roles and characteristics in order to manage and
influence people as manger is responsible for management of people whereas Leader is
responsible for motivating employees in the organisation (Olukanni and Aremu, 2017). Manager
plan for growth and development of employees whereas leader ex-cute the plan and influence
individual to work effectively for achievement of company goals. Various roles and
characteristics of leader and manager in Marks and Spencer are as follows:
Manger set goals whereas leader creates a vision: Manager focus is to setting goals,
measuring and achieving objectives of company by controlling deviation and taking various
measure for attainment of objectives. Whereas leader of company influence, inspire and engage
employees to turn company vision into reality (Chakurkar, Mukhopadhyay and Babu, 2018).
Therefore, manager of Marks and Spencer set goals of company and leader motivate and
influence employees to work effectively for achievement of predetermine objectives of company.

Leader take risk, manager control risk: Leader of company always try to use new method to
motivate people even if the result of such technique is miserable (Łukowski, 2017). Whereas
manager of Marks and Spencer minimize risk by controlling various situation for effectively
achievement of goals.
Leader build relationship, manager build systems and process: Main function of leader in
M&S is to inspire people in the organization by building strong interpersonal relationship
between them thus increasing productivity and performance of employees (Ma, 2017). On the
other hand Manager is build structure that helps in quick and effective communication between
employees. Use various method and system to analysis performance of individual for attainment
of desired outcome. Thus, leader build relationship where manger decide roles and relationship
between employees for growth and success of company.
Manager of M&S plays an important role in planning, organising, staffing for its
employees so that they can enhance their knowledge and skill to perform various function within
organisation (Łukowski, 2017). It plans for organising appropriate training and development
plans so that employee by attending such training is able to enhance their knowledge and get
specialised in performing particular firm. Manager is responsible for effective management of
people and resources so that organisational goals can be achieved.
Different characteristics present in leaders of M&S for influencing employees are
honesty, delegation, sense of humour, ability to influence people, positive attitude, creative and
effectively communication . Whereas manager have analytical skill, time management ability,
high knowledge, communication skills and able to manage people and situation. Thus, all such
roles and characteristics of manager and leader helps in growth and success of business
(Olukanni and Aremu, 2017). There are various leadership theory such as behavioural, trait,
contingency, transactional and transformational leadership that can be used by leader to motivate
individual. Behavioural leadership theory is used by M&S leader to enhance performance and
productivity of company.
Behavioural leadership theory
This theory emphasis on leader's behaviour despite mental, physical or social
characteristics thus it is concerned with task and people. It means leaders are made they are not
born so anyone can become leader by learning and observing things form environment (Wei and
et.al.,2018). M&S create new leaders by providing various opportunities to individual to learn
