INTRODUCTIONThis project discusses about operational management. It deals with designing andcontrolling process of management. Business performs different processes that are managed bymanagers. Leaders motivate employees to work (Anderson and Cochran, 2018). To increaseprofitably and productivity, firm adopts different methods and strategies. This is a basic processof management. Further, this project discusses about roles and characteristics about managersand leaders and management principles given by Henry Fayol, along with different types ofleadership styles, different strategies used by business, role of store manager, importance ofmanagement in Marks and Spencer, factors that affect operational management and impact ofdecisions taken by manager of company.TASK 1a) Differences and similarities between a leader and managerLeader gives command to their group or community. They lead organization and givedirections to employees. They are in a position to dominate people and influence group.Leadership is concerned about people (Chenoweth and Bird, 2018). Different business process ismanaged by manger. It is responsibility of the manager to administer or guide people oforganization. They are responsible for completion of task in organization. Managers and leadersplay very important role in an organisation. Here is a comparison between their roles andcharacteristics.ManagersLeadersManagement of tasks in different departmentsis done by manager. They are responsible forcompletion of specific tasks in that department.They coordinate different activities in anorganisation and get work done on time.Managers sets target for people in organisationThe role of leader is to guide group. Theymotivate people in-group, to performeffectively to achieve goals in an organisation.Leader prepares group of effective workers toachieve targets on time. Managers have set of responsibilities andobserve situation of organisation and givesinstructions about execution of task (Johnsen,2018). They follow guidelines given bymanagement institutions, are very rigid inLeaders show light of hope to their followers.They individually contribute towards the goalsof organisation by providing individuals withinstructions. Leadership is a natural process,they give an expression of ideas to their

nature and never change their style ofmanagement. followers. This person always encouragesmanagement to work effectively. Manager decides to keep their tasks specifiedor in limited hand, this makes work precise andtargets are achieved on time (Kristensen andJonsson, 2018). Managers control actions oftheir group. They provide guidance to theiremployees.Leadership is people oriented, they study oranalyse behaviour of people in their group andon basis of there analysation they decide thatweather a person is ready to handle moreresponsibilities or not. Leaders don't controlpeople they guide them towards their goals.Managers control actions of their group. Theyprovide guidance to their employees. Managershave rigid nature, they follow proper set ofinstructions and apply same on every situation.They have mindset and do not like changingtheir opinions. Leaders don't control people they guide themtowards their goals. Leaders are focused onneeds of their followers. They personallyanalyse different situations of organisation. Asleaders are concerned about their followers,they guide and motivate them to face differentdifficulties of an organisation. There are different departments inorganisations, different works is performed bydepartments. Mangers are in charge ofperformance in these departments whereasleaders focus on directing their followers howto perform task on time. Leaders are very flexible in nature, they alwayslike to experiment new ideas. Risk takingability of leaders is very high. They do notflow any guideline or instruction, they changetheir leadership style according to differentorganisation situations. They adopt differentstrategies as they are required to deal withproblems.b) Functions of management given by Henry FayolThis theory is given by Henry Fayol, who was an engineer in 1961. Many managementtheories were given by Fayol. These strategies were designed according to experience. Theseprinciples help organisation to function in better way.
