INTRODUCTIONManagement is considered as the most important aspect of organisation and plays crucialrole in managing, organising & coordinating all the activities of firm in systematic way.Operations has its own significance and mainly deals in transformation of raw materials or inputsto finished goods (AbouRizk, 2010) . The area related to development & controlling ofproduction process as well as redesigning of operations that includes in manufacturing ofproducts & services are referred as OM (Operations Management). This function of organisationplays an essential part in attaining its all the targets and objectives. In the present assignment,given company is Marks & Spencer which deals in clothing, luxury and home products,groceries etc. It is a British multinational retailer which is headquartered in London. The reportcovers different roles and characteristics of manager & leader as well as its its application incertain situations. It also includes theories of leadership and key approaches to operationsmanagement. Apart form this, significance & value of OM in attaining business objectives andforces of business environment that influence operations management & decisions of managersas well as leaders are included in the project. TASK 1 LO1P1 Define and Compare roles and characteristics of manager & leaderMarks & Spencer is a British multinational firm of United Kingdom and headquartered inLondon. The company perform its operation in many countries and offer its products worldwide.M&S follow simple structure of management in which number of levels are limited betweenadministrative & front line staff. This framework is followed in order to promote employeeengagement in decision making process. Its basic objective is to decrease bureaucracy anddevelop thinking as well as other skills of manpower by giving them authority to take decisions. Leader is defined as an individual who is able to influence other persons by theircommunication, thoughts and actions. They lead the team and administer them guidance to attainindividual as well as organisational goals (Ageron, Gunasekaran and Spalanzani, 2012). Managers are the persons who manage all activities and functions of organisation insystematic manner and majorly emphasize on attaining objectives of the company. Theyformulate strategies for their future action plan. Characteristics and roles of leader & manager: 1

Similarities:Roles and characteristics of managers and leaders is very similar as their main purpose isto attain firm's objectives. Some of these are defined below:Motivators: In M&S, they both play role of good motivators and motivate theirworkforce in effective manner (Alderton and Saieva, 2013). They provide them direction toachieve objectives of company.Communicators: Both, managers and leaders are good communicators and with the helpof their excellent communication skills, they convey all the messages and informations toemployees in effective way. Decision makers: Both are good decisions makers and take decisions regarding timelycompletion of tasks and activities of firm. Their decision making skills are excellent andcontributes in firm's growth. Differences:ManagerLeader In M&S, managers are responsible forsystematic administration of functionsand activities of firm. They design plans and formulatestrategies for the purpose of attainingobjectives of M&S. They focus on managing work bytaking effective decisions. Leader of M&S influence others andmake teams. They coordinate with allthe team members and lead it. They emphasize of identifying issuesand draw effective solutions of those bytaking appropriate decisions. They focus on leading teams and gainachievements. In Marks & Spencer, different roles and responsibilities are played by manager and leaderin attaining objectives of firm (Ashby, Leat and Hudson-Smith, 2012). They determine needs ofstaff members and satisfy them by fulfilling those. They meet their goals with organisation'sgoals and collectively work to attain those. Leaders identify skills need of manpower andcommunicate it with manager so that appropriate training programme can be designed. It assistsin improving knowledge and skills of personnel and enables them to work in better way. 2
