INTRODUCTION
Operations management is that area which is related with designing and also managing
the production process and also redesigning operations of business in manufacturing of services
and products. The main focus of operation management is on process to manufacturing and also
distributing the services and goods. Starbucks is the largest coffee business organisation and also
a chain of coffee house (Bhagat, Bolton and Subramanian, 2011). This business enterprise serves
many different items such as cold and hot drinks, tea products, whole bean of coffee etc. In this
present business report mentions about the comparison among the various characteristics and
also roles of manager and a leader in Starbucks. In the different situation, the functions of a
manager and also role of a leader is going to discuss in this report. Under this present given
report also mentions regarding the various types of theories and also models of approaches.

P1. Various roles and characteristics of a leader and a manager of Starbucks
A manager is a person who is responsible for administrating, managing and also
controlling an organisation. It is the duty of Starbucks manager is to monitor and also control
the all activities related to the organisation. It also motivate its staff members so that they can
work well and enhance their skills. In this firm, manager hires and selects the capable staff
members for doing business related activities. This person also provides training for increasing
their skills, knowledge and working capabilities. Leader is also an important part of the
organisation. Its is a person who gives the instructions, direction, suggestions and also direction
toperson and group of persons for accomplishing the common goals and objectives. The roles
and responsibilities of a leader and manager are different from each other but both are working
for achieving the common aim and objectives. In Starbucks, there are different types of leaders
working. Leader always motivate its team members to work together in a team. There are some
roles of a leader and manager as given below:
Roles of leader
Team building- It is the main role of a leader to make the team building and also
encourage all team members to work together by supporting each other. If they will work in a
team, then they will understand the feeling of each other and also achieve the target of company
at specific period of time (Castro and Tomàs, 2011.). Leader should aware its unit members from

the importance of team work. In the Starbucks coffee house, leader motivates its team members
and also work with its team members.
Supportive- Leader is that person who supports every person of the team. If there is any
kind of issue to its staff members then in this case, person listens their queries and problems
effectively and make proper solution of that problem.
Motivate- Leader of Starbucks always increases the morale and motivation level of its
staff members so that they can perform and do their business related activities effectively within
stipulated period of time. From the motivation their interest in task increases.
Problem solver- The need of leaders is every stage. This person is also a problem solver.
If at workplace of in a team there is any kind of conflict and problems arise among the team
members, then in this case leader listen their issues care fully and try to solve their conflict by
providing them a common solution.
Roles of manager
Implementing plans and policies- The main role of manager is to execute the policies and
plans at workplace which are formulated by the top management (Cruz and Marques, 2011). In
the implementation, manager include the employees for increasing their motivation level.
Provide training- Its major role is to give the training and development to staff members
for enhancing their skills and also working abilities.
Monitoring and controlling- Human resource manager monitor and controls the business
operations and all activities. Manager has the right to control unnecessary activities from the
workplace.
Characteristics of leader and manager of Starbucks
Positive attitude- While dealing with its staff members or clients, it is necessary that the
attitude of a manager and leader should be positive (Gao, Janssen and Shi, 2011). If they will
not react properly with its employees or team members, then in this case, they will be
demotivated. From this, the productivity of Starbucks will be down.
Creative- It is the main characteristic of leader and manager. In Starbucks, both these
persons are very creative and find out the new and unique ideas to do the business activities in an
easiest and effective way.
Confident- It is necessary that a leader and also manager should be confident and also
deal with any kind of difficult condition.

Motivator- The leaders and also managers of Starbucks motivate their employees (Huang,
Lu and Duan, 2012). From this, they will work by contributing their knowledge and skills in an
effective and appropriate manner.
M1 Difference among function of a manager and role of a leader
The manager and a leader both person are varied from each other. The functions of a
manager are planning, directing, monitoring, controlling, training and development, hiring and
selection, implementing the plans and policies etc. On the other hand the roles of leader is to
building a team, enhancing the motivation level of staff members, search innovative ideas and
some other functions.

In each and every condition, the functions of a manager and roles of a leader is different.
They both are working for accomplishing the targets of Starbucks. Some times, at the workplace,
the various kinds of conditions are arise and it is necessary to leaders and managers is to deal
with the various kinds of conditions. In Starbucks business organisation, their main motive is to
enhancing the morale and also motivational level of their staff members. The different types of
functions of manager and the roles of a leader is discussed below as above:
Customers- They are very essential for the business. It is necessary for company is to
make the good image or reputation in the mind of consumers. In context to the consumers, it is
necessary that manager should focus on the quality of product and also producing the services
and goods on the basis of their preferences and tastes. It is the duty of manager is to recruit some
capable staff members who can work effectively and solving any kind of query or problems to
consumer. The Starbucks business firm deals in the coffee sector s it is necessary that company
should provide the tasty and better quality of coffee to the consumers.
Employees- They are the important stakeholders of Starbucks. In this staff members are
give their contribution in achieving the goals and provide the satisfaction to consumers by
providing them satisfactory services (Li, Arvey and Song, 2015). In the situation of employee,
manager should provide training to staff members for enhancing their satisfaction level. With the
help of training their skills, knowledge and also motivation level of employees will be good. It is

necessary for manager is to hire the capable employee who can able to perform the job and tasks.
Leader should motivate them to work together in a team.
Society- It can impact good and can bad on the business related activities. In the situation
of society, manager should do some social activities and these all according to the societal rules,
values, norms, beliefs and attitudes (Niknam, Meymand and Nayeripour, 2010). It is necessary
for manager is to doing all activities of business ethically and legal. Operations and activities of a
business should not harm the society. For developing the effective impact, manager and leader of
Starbucks conducts some activities for the people of society.
Suppliers- The responsibility of supplier is to delivering qualitative raw materials on the
proper time. From this, company can do its business operation timely. In context to the supplier,
it is necessary for leader and manager is to choose a right supplier whip can provide the good
quality of raw materials on the right time and at a right place.
P3 Different theories and models of approach In Starbucks
In Starbucks business organisation, there are various types of theories and also
approaches of leadership. The managers and leaders both motivate its staff members and they
also helps in doing the business related activities with them. The leadership theories are very
helpful in increasing the development and growth of an organisation. There are three types of
theories of leadership discuss below:
Theory of system leadership- This kind of theory works as the problem solving. In
Starbucks, if there is any dispute arise, then in this case it is the responsibility of a leader is solve
them out in an efficient and systematic way. Otherwise, it can impact bad on the performance of
an organisation. It is necessary to a leader is to determine those components which can affect on
the activities and operations of business.
Situational theory- On the basis of this theory, manager adopt the various leadership style
in various kinds of conditions (Pham and et. al., 2010.). There is no particular leadership style.
This leadership theory is very flexible in nature. In regards to it, in Starbucks organisation
leaders should set its style in development of staff members. There are some of the effective
points are included in Situational theory of a leadership:
 To work with creativity and also introduce employees at the workplace.
 Under this, it is necessary for manager is to move from one particular situation to
other and also deal with nay kind of situation.

Contingency leadership- It is a kind of the behavioural theory and based on the opinions,
ideas in business. According to this theory, there is no perfect way to provide guidance to the
business and also doing the business related operations (Salmon and et. al., 2011). This
leadership theory is concerned with the specific condition.
Two management theories
Modern management theory- The main motive of this theory of management is to
maximising the growth level of staff members by increasing their level of performance. This
modern theory focused on work with adopting the new technology and analysing relationship
between staff members and employer.
Classical theory- It is the traditional theory and in this, employer finds an easiest and
better way to perform the business related activities. It is a kind of the scientific theory of
management. Its main objective is to increasing the growth and profitability of business.

Strength- It is very helpful in providing a data which is beneficial for the business
operations and its activities.
Weakness- This theory is not proactive in nature but reactive in nature. Under this, its
difficult to choose the suitable contingency plan (Yin and et. al., 2010).
System theory of leadership
Strengths

 It is an effective and systematic plan of action related to business.
 It gives an effective and better control on business.
 It is helpful in developing the contribution between all the business related
activities (Huang, Lu and Duan, 2012).
Weakness- The main weakness of this theory is that it is complex in nature and can not
used in the practical situations.
Situational theory
Strength- In the Starbucks, it used for providing the provide training to leaders and it is
flexible in nature.
Weakness- It has limited flexibility and under this the time limit is small.

are different from each other (Cruz and Marques, 2011). The different types of leadership
