INTRODUCTION Management is all about getting work done from others by establishing propercoordination among different activities of a business so as to achieve organisational goals onspecified time period. Whereas operation refers to the process of conversion of raw materialsinto finished goods and services taking into consideration that production is carried out byincurring minimum of cost which should result in increase in efficiency of production process(Boyd and Dougherty, 2016). The company which is being taken into consideration is Procter and Gamble which is amultinational consumer goods corporation with it’s headquarters in Ohio. It is specialized in awide range of consumers health/personal health as well as in hygienic products and personalcare. It serve area all over the world except Cuba and North korea and the number of employeesare near around 95,000 who are working under this organisation.This report explains about the roles, functions and characteristics of leader and manager withinan organisation as well as leadership theories and key approaches to operational management isbeing explained in this file. Lastly, this report focus has been given on relationship which existbetween management and leadership in business environment and the impacts its has uponoperational management and decision making process.TASK 1P1 Definition and comparison of the roles and characteristics of a leader and manager.Leader is defined as an individual who has the ability of influencing, guiding andmotivating a group of individuals towards the common goal of an organisation bycommunicating the clear vision to each one in an organisation. Therefore leader of Procter andGamble possess certain characteristics and roles which are specified below (Kull and et. al.,2014):Characteristics of leader:Possess the ability to take correct decisions: Leader is the one who possess the abilityto take correct decision on time without any delay. Through proper analysis leader of theit’s the leader who take right decision which ultimately help the Procter and Gambleorganisation to function its operational activity on smoothly by avoiding delay in theirtask performance. Possess the ability to delegate: Leader also possess other major characteristics thathe/she have the ability to delegate roles and responsibility to it team members as per theirrespective capabilities and skills which help the Procter and Gamble organisation toachieve goal on time.Emotional intelligence: An effective leader must also possess brief understanding abouthow their emotions can affect people who perform different activities around them (Han,2017). This is the essential characteristic which the leader of Procter and Gamble mustpossess, means that leader must have the ability to control emotions so that while takingcorrect decision no emotions comes in between. Thus, it will help in taking effective andbest decision on time.Role of leader:Integrates organisation goal with personal goal: Leader of Procter and Gamble playsan essential role as it major role is to influence workforce to work better foraccomplishing organisational common goal, by motivating them that if they work for

organisation then they can easily achieve their personal goal too. Thus, this specifies thatleader plays an important role of integrating personal and organisational goals.Strategy formulation: Another important role of the leader of Procter and Gambleorganisation is that a leader makes strategies for the business like whether to give trainingand development session to workforce or not, pricing strategy etc. so as to achievecompetitive advantage in market place on continuous basis.Motivating and engaging others: Effective leader main role is to motivate and engageworkers to carry out their respective task appropriately so as to accomplish achievingtarget aims and objectives on time. Thus, in order to motivate employee a leader will willrender monetary and non monetary benefits like appreciation for better performance fromtime to time, promotions, salary increment etc. As well as will ask worker to participatein different activities of an organisation so as to engage each employees in different set ofactivities.Building and leading effective team: This is another essential role of a leader that is tobuild and lead effective team so as to achieve a successful growth on time. Moreover inorder to build effective team leader will render training and development session so thateach team members get updated about the knowledge and skills as well as about theworking cultural environment of an organisation. Manager is the person who is responsible for controlling overall administration and groupof staff so as to make best and optimum utilisation of resources (Lam, 2014).. Therefore,manager of Procter and Gamble organisation possess certain characteristics and functions whichare mentioned below:Characteristics of manager:Communication: One of the characteristics which the manager of Procter and Gamblemust possess is that he/she should have the ability to communicate with its subordinatesproperly by listing and accepting their ideas and viewpoints. Thus, it will helpsubordinates to perform their respective task effectively.Problem solving: Other main characteristics which the manager of Procter and Gamblemust possess is that he/she should have the ability of solving ant kind of issues orproblems which might arise in an organisation. Thus, it will help in reducing the delay ofdifferent functions of an organisation.Planning knowledge: This is term to be another characteristics which a manager mustpossess. It means that manager of Procter and Gamble must pursue knowledge abouthow to formulate effective and efficient plan. Additionally manager should also pursueknowledge about different question which must be addressed while formulating effectiveplan and this is how to produce, when to produce, by whom to produce and where toproduce.Customer knowledge: Manager of Procter and Gamble must also posses knowledgeabout customers changing taste and preferences or it can be said manager should possessknowledge about changing attitudes, beliefs and norms of the customers and society(Purce, 2014).
